Just realised (by accident) that you don't need your TiVo connected to your home network while using the VMTV web site to access stuff like My Shows and Planned Recordings.

I guess that VM keep a copy of this data at their end - because both the network homeplug and switch used by my TiVo are currently off, yet I can access My Shows etc.

The TiVo has its own modem which is connected to VM's network though doesn't it ? Only guessing here but surely its always connected , the connection to your router would be purely for MRS and iPad companion apps I'd imagine.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I thought for some reason that it had to be connected to the home network......which probably means I'm wasting a IP address on the router for the TiVo.

I guess when the Android version of VMTA gets released* I won't even need TiVo connected to the network then.

You would need it connected to use the remote control functionality side of the app I believe.

Would be better if it kept copies of your shows and then you transfer them if they needed to swap the TiVo box?

That's been discussed a lot of times in the past

The TiVo has a 1Mb upload on it's connection so it would take a very long time to do

Before the Liberty takeover, the long term plan was apparently to eventually move the recordings into 'the cloud' which would do exactly that i.e. separate recordings from the STBs

Not sure what the plan may be now though

There's always been two parts to the TV Anywhere iPad app, Home and Away.

Home requires the TiVo to be connected to your home network but only gives a little extra function.

I thought they (VM? LG?) were keen on Cloud-based PVR functionality? So each programme would be recorded at the headend and customers would have a low-power box capable of playing recordings, with the UI based in the Cloud.

Correct, they won't even allow certain channels to stream between boxes in the same home.. yet you can move the box physically if you want to upstairs to watch something on it!

Would be good if they could at least use the cloud to store series links, favourites, wishlists etc for box replacements.. surely wouldn't be that hard to upload/download a config file from the box as a back up.

You can't view your programmes sadly due to rights issues sadly, but you can use that website to manage your TiVo, set series links, manage series links and set up remote recording etc :)

You can also view live TV on certain channels that stream (if subscribed)
