Monday Round up.

Been confirmed by two insiders:
-More 4 HD to launch, and Yesterday will be moving to EPG 206 and Yesterday +1 moves to 207 from tomorrow.

Also confirmed (By one insider):
-CBS Reality and Horror move into M+ on 3rd October.
-An insider says Fox+ may also launch on Tuesday.

I have recently been thinking of downgrading to M+ from XL as there are only two film channels that I would miss, horror channel being one of them, so this is good news :)

I do think that channels that are FTA elsewhere should really be in M or M+. I could always rig up my ex sub Sky box to receive the channels, but being on the VM EPG is much more convenient and allows me to record programmes too.

Has anyone got any experience with rigging up a TiVo, a Sky box and the Freeview capabilities a digital TV. Is it difficult to do?

-If Sky News HD did launch on Virgin Channel 603 what will happen when BBC News HD launches in 2014?

Before the Sky Basics dispute, Sky News had a better position on channel 601. As soon as the Sky channels were pulled, VM immediately put BBC News onto the more favourable EPG slot that Sky used to have.

When the Sky channels returned, Sky News had to return on EPG number 602.

As I said a few weeks ago, now that BBC News is to start in HD, I believe that Sky want to steal a march on the new BBC HD News channel. If Sky manage to get their HD News on VM before the BBC does, this means that they will be the first on air and hope to attract and retain viewers. They will also get the better EPG slot.

If Sky did not facilitate the addition of Sky News HD on VM, there is a very good chance that viewers of Sky News SD would defect to BBC News HD.

For the same reasons above, I also believe that there is a very real chance of Sky News HD coming to freeview and/or going FTA on satellite.

HDfootyman has recently seen Netflix being briefly tested on the VM website, so it looks like it's on It's way :)

I see the MTV channels have had their logos tweaked, smaller too. MTV HD has no "HD" in its DOG. VH1 remains the same old logo.

In your second post, post #3, is the last question about ESPN (right at the bottom) still relevant?

*EDIT*

S'ok, just realised you have ESPN classic in there which would make it relevant i guess.

That is totally contrary to what was put on the website yesterday which a number of us saw. It said 6 months free which, in my opinion, seems far more likely.

It could be that it's free for 6 months if you are not on the XL pack.

I think that adding Netflix to the XL pack would be brilliant and ensure that non-sports fans were given access to some good content that is of interest to them. A nice balance.

Would make sense considering what HDFootyMan stumbled upon yesterday. It would be another real coup for VM if it is bundled in with XL. :)

It could be, but that is not what was on the website yesterday. It specifically said 6 months free with XL (or whatever they are calling it today :) ) so the same kind of deal as with Spotify.

I absolutely agree it could change. I just really don't want people to get their hopes up too far. Let's have our speculation with a little dash of realism. Then we can all be happy.

Yep, I also think 6 months free Netflix is a good enticement for new customers. Especially as it's all built in to the TiVo.

I suppose it's possible that VM is trying to establish the likely take up of Netflix in the trial area before trying to do a deal on XL.

It could well be, but one of the rumours I saw on here suggested Netflix could have channel 414 so as those with V+HD boxes could access it too. Time will tell soon enough though. :)

Perhaps Netflix will be free for the first six months for XL customers.

This would give XL customers extra perceived value (people often tend to look at the 'free' headline news and not worry too much about the fact that it's time limited).

VM/Netflix may then hope that either due to customers finding the service invaluable and/or inertia, that they won't cancel when the service becomes chargeable.

Well I'm a virgin viewer and I saw the website yesterday.

Are we really starting rumours based on " an Virgin Viewer" now?

I'm pretty sure that it will have an EPG number and will be a portal channel in the same way that Tiddlers TV will be.

Is that even possible with a V+ box? I didn't think it was technically capable of streaming videos in this way directly from the internet.

kind of incline to agree, similar to the Youtube channel having a channel number but V+HD cant access it, although saying that BBCi Player red button is technically doing the same but im sure someone more qualified than me can confirm this :)

BBC iPlayer on the TiVo gets the streams from the BBC direct, on the other boxes it's from the Virgin servers.. sorry not technical but am sure thats how it works.

I don't know how it will be done technically, but I imagine that it will be like TV Choice, where it will say 'subscribed' for XL customers for the first six months. After the free period the content will become unavailable until the appropriate fee is paid, or, perhaps the content will be offered on a PPV basis.

Does the online Netflix offering allow for standalone purchases for individual programmes/films??

That's not at all how Netflix works unfortunately. Or the V+. So I'm afraid I agree with the others that say that Netflix will only be available through the TiVo.

Despite what I've said above, VM may indeed go down the route of the the VM Youtube channel in another step to try to get customers to switch to TiVo. But, is this as important now that Horizon is on the horizon so to speak ?? :D

Because VM are signed up to the Netflix CDN, as I understand it, VM have a direct link to Netflix content servers. Whether that would enable Netflix to be added to V+ I don't know. I guess it could be a lot of work if it is possible, and I doubt they would want to anyway, as Netflix would be another incentive for customers to move away from V+ to Tivo, which is VM's aim.

But is it now that LG have taken over? They will want to eventually migrate everyone onto their Horizon box, in part so that they don't have to pay licence fees to TiVo.

They may take the view that it is far easier and cheaper to wait until they are ready to implement Horizon in the UK and change boxes from eg a V+ to Horizon, than go the V+--> TiVo--> Horizon route.

No one knows. But Tivo has been exceptionally successful for VM, so they may take the view to leave VM alone with regard to a set top box change.

Media Boy I saw you saying you were considering changes to "coming soon" next year. Rather than be bound by dates, ie. changing every 3 months, what about changing when a certain number of pages are reached? That way if nothing is happening there'll be no need to start a new thread, even if that takes a few months.

Also, how good do you reckon your info is that Netflix will be in xl? I know you've said it's just a rumour.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that Netflix, will definitely be bundled with the XL package.

Why? Because it would be stupid of Virgin not to try and get this service in to its flagship package. And if they did try, it would be idiotic of Netflix to refuse to do a deal.

I remember seeing Lovefilm (on Watchdog I think It was) and their agents had been lying about the terms and conditions for the first free month and the cancellation policy.

The programme also exposed Lovefilm as employing tactics to try to stop or delay customers from cancelling.

To be fair, this was at least a year ago, so things might have improved since.

Why? Because it would be stupid of Virgin not to try and get this service in to its flagship package. And if they did try, it would be idiotic of Netflix to refuse to do a deal.

I suspect that like, for example, ESPN, Netflix have worked out that it is more profitable and less exposed to customer churn to have a small cut of every XL fee, than to have a relatively small number of standalone subscribers.

Other benefits include better advertising revenue (if Netflix does have advertising) and income from customers (like myself) who would not think to subscribe to an online subscription service.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

Last time I cancelled from Lovefilm, I was on the phone to the agent for a good half hour trying patiently to cancel.

In the end, I had to tell him that my reasons for cancelling were nothing to do with him and put the phone down - most unlike me!

I still get letters and emails begging me to return at favourable rates

This goes completely against what was on the Virgin website earlier in the week which said 6 months free when you sign up to XL.

The 6 months free offer also ties in with what happened with they Spotify deal.

If that was to happen I think it would either require a price increase to XL that would push it beyond what people would readily pay or for Virgin to drop Virgin TVOD in place of Netflix. They've not shown a great deal of interest in being in the content business, so maybe the latter is the ultimate strategy?

Remember, knowing it is "Dolby Digital" is only half the story. "Dolby Digital" audio is compressed and PER CHANNEL uses less bandwidth and is worse than PCM (uncompressed). What you need to know is whether they are using DD 2.0 (saving bandwidth) or DD 5.1 (full surround sound) or, rarely, something in between.

The trouble is we don't know how up to date that webpage was? Obviously someone in VM uploaded the wrong version of that page, and considering how easy it is to change text and images on websites, it may just have been a test page to make sure the formatting was correct.

It would be great if it was bundled into XL, but it makes more sense to offer an extended free trial and then subscription afterwards (like Spotify) I would be happier with that as I currently pay £9.99 for a Lovefilm subscription that I don't really use anymore. So I could swap to the cheaper Netflix.

The difference is, however, the 6 months free I saw was for new customers and so is importantly different to being included in XL. It was being offered free with XL.

It's DD 2.0

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

I just think it would make good business sense for Netflix to make a deal with Virgin.

For example, if Virgin offer to pay them around £1 a month for every XL subscription, that would get Netflix a guaranteed income of around £2M a month. To get that same amount without a deal for XL, they would have to get over 15% of Virgin's XL subscribers to sign up. Considering the fact that only 500,000 people across the whole of the UK have subscribed to their service over the past year, then expecting to get another 333,000, from a much smaller catchment area, seems far fetched. So 2 million new customers, albeit paying less than the normal price, is a very tempting offer, especially when you see that their current total number of subscribers in the UK is only 1.5 million. It would also get them in 1st, before Lovefilm, that's got to count for something as well. Virgin could even offer to restrict their service to their set-top boxes only, as part of any deal.
