Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

We've seen some exciting news in the past 24 hours regarding Netflix launching on TiVo.

If you had the choice of Netflix or SKY Atlantic, being included at no extra cost in XL or VIP, what would you rather have?

I think most already know the kind of programming on SKY Atlantic however Netflix do offer some great exclusive programming too. House of Cards, Orange is the new Black, Arrested Development, Hemlock Grove and Bad Samaritans are just some of the Netflix "originals" with so much more planned in the coming months.

I enjoy SKY Atlantic, and I enjoy Netflix however if I had to chose one I'd have to go with Netflix just because it offers so much more. Movies, original programming and hundreds of boxsets.

Already have Netflix via tablet etc, so its SA for me as there are some very good American imports on there.

Re: Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

If I had a Tivo box it would be a tough call as I do really enjoy the content that Sky Atlantic offers but at the same time Netflix does have a good mix of original programming and quality boxsets. I would probably lean towards Netflix in that case just because of the volume of content.

However as I dont have nor have any plans to get a Tivo box i'll go for Atlantic.

The point here is that VM are bringing competing services to there platform, A massive step forward.

Amazes me the amount of people who haven't got a TiVo box.

Re: Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

Given your bit about 'no extra cost', then Netflix is the better value.

OTOH, Netflix is available at a very reasonable extra cost. Sky Atlantic isn't available at all unless you have Sky.

So, it would be Atlantic for me, despite Netflix offering the better value.

The pole is about it being included in the package not just having the app.

Netflix included in the XL package? nope.
Netflix should be available as an app for ALL customers, even the 'free' TV M.

A subscription within a subscription just doesn't sit well with me

Apologies if I'm being thick but I don't understand your point here. How is this different to things like BT Sports, Sky Sports and Movies being included in some of the packs. Aren't they "subscriptions within subscriptions" in the same way? Especially when you take into account the on demand content on things like Sky movies.

So you wouldn't want it free with your subscription?

Netflix will be available to everyone with TiVo regardless of their package. It was suggested by the BBC that Netflix might be included in one of Virgins bundles.

So there is a chance that XL or VIP customers will get it at no added cost to their existing subscription whilst M, M+ and L customers can access the service too by paying the standard £5.99 per month.

As suggested by Drintoul, it's no different to BT Sports being included in the XL package or SKY Sports and SKY Movies being included in VIP.

Re: Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

I'm one of the 2 million without Tivo, that is until Friday lunch time. So I've timed all these hopeful changes just right.

I voted for SA, as I would hope that SA arrived on XL subscriptions. It would be nice if Virgin managed to do a deal for it to land on anything from M+ upwards. Considering Sky subscribers have the SD channel regardless of what deal they are on.

Regards Netflix, I could see it being like Spotify Premium and we only get 3-6 months free.

I can't imagine that Virgin would cover £3 for XL subscribers for BT Sports & cover the wholesale cost of Tivo to XL customers as well?

However they may use it all as loss leaders just to get people to sign up for the XL package? Free BTS, SA & Netflix (and Sky Bravo as well if the rumours are true) is a tempting package for anyone deciding between Virgin, Sky & BT.

Re: Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

Why Netflix over Sky Atlantic?

Simple, as soon as VM gets SkyA, Sky will create a new premium channel and move content to that.

Re: Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

I can't vote because there's no option for both!

Seriously, we are not having to choose. We already know that Netflix is coming, and a Sky Atlantic announcement will be made soon.

In my opinion, Sky Atlantic should be in the same packs as Sky 1 as it is one of the Sky Basics channels.

I don't mind paying the £5.99 for Netflix, but if it's in the XL pack, that is a really good deal.

I still haven't upgraded my V+, as i didn't want a new 12 month contract, but maybe i should look into it if Netflix is free on XL.

Re: Netflix or SKY Atlantic?

i have Netflix on my Roku and my smart blu-ray. Never used the service- not even signed up for the free month.

Even at £7pm i have not been interested in subscribing.

The US version seems to offer a lot more content than the UK version. There are ways round getting round geographic restrictions and getting the US service and when watching on your PC etc but on TIVO i would think that would not be possible.

Sky Atlantic is just one channel- it has a couple of shows i like - Blue Bloods, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. But this has not made me abandon VM and run to Sky. I would think Sky would have realised they are not going to attract any new customers for the sake of this channel alone and would be keen to get it carried on other platforms and increase their advertising revenue instead.

Both would be nice but i wouldnt pay more for either tbh.

the original poll question is based if they were included in a pack - for me thats XL. I suppose i vote Netflix as it would offer a bit more than SA.

The addition of Netflix would be an added incentive to move over to a TIVO box.

I still can't work out your aversion to the box. Even if you only use it the same way as you use a V+ box, there are advantages to having the TIVO.

Well it is, if it offers you what you want from a stb. I consider it good value because I think its features are good and because, since I'm now on a collection, I'm actually paying less than I was when I had v+. As Hugh would say, ymmv.

As far as value for money is concerned, I think it's fair to say that when we live in a world where picture box costs £5 per month, Netflix is very well priced. Also, Netflix for me over Sky Atlantic mainly for the sheer variety it offers.

I welcome Netflix on Tivo, but unless you can get Tivo as a deal, it's an extra on-going £5 a month. So is it worth it just for Netflix when you can buy several inexpensive one off cost boxes which will do Netflix with more options?

For those who don't want Tivo for it's Tivo functionality, but want Netflix, I'm not sure that TiVo is necessarily the best way to go.

We're already paying more for the TIVO. This makes it better value for money and you can get Netflix on the one operating system, which is what most people want.

We don't want to access different programmes by using different equipment, and we want it on our TVs.

No need for Netflix in my house. Sky Atlantic would be preferred option but I'm not too bothered about that either.

I'm not saying that adding Netflix to Tivo doesn't make it better value; of course it does.

But if you have no interest in Tivo, i.e., a V+ or VHD is all you need or want, then paying an extra £5 per month for Tivo, just to get Netflix, then there are probably better options to get Netflix.

People have, PS3s, Xboxes, Wiis blueray players etc. connected to their TVs these days. So I'm not sure that argument holds up for most people these days. And most of the gear I've listed can already get Netflix, so another reason why moving to Tivo just to get Netflix is not worth it for some people.

And of course there is the fact that Netflix on Tivo limits you to just UK Netflix content, where other devices don't.

Well, I don't have that equipment and nor do most people I know. I guess it depends what circles you move in.

You may not find it worthwhile to go to TIVO 'just for' Netflix. But what if they added Lovefilm? What if they added more and more choices that you could get through TIVO? My bet is that you would eventually be persuaded to make the move.

I agree that Netflix UK is not a patch on Netflix US, but that's just an interim rights issue problem. Deals will be done over the coming months and years which I am confident will narrow the gap.

Far too much to list.

Here is a link to the official Virgin Media TiVo guide:

Have a look and see if the features appeal to you.

Here are some of the things that I think are better:

3 recordable tuners; V+ 2 plus a live channel.

Much bigger hard drive. With all the HD channels VM now have, the 20 hours of HD space the V+ has is just way too small.

Automatic rescheduling of recording clashes ---- which don't happen as often anyway because the Tivo has 3 recordable tuners. No more manually having to check for repeats, which you have to do on V+ for shows that clash.

Series links, once set, stay forever. No more having to reset them when a show takes a season or mid season break like you have to do on V+ and only realise that you needed to do it after the show had re-started and you've missed several episodes!

Whishlists. Get to hear about a show that is starting in 6 months time, but because it's not on the EPG you can't set a recording for it? Add it to a Whishlist and it will automatically get recorded when it starts to broadcast, no matter which VM channel it turns up on.

You can also set up whishlists for your favourite subject, actor, director and define extra filter criteria for them and they will automatically get recorded if a show relevant to them turns up on the EPG any time in the future.

Extensive intelligent search with links to broadcast dates and the ability to set up a series link or whishlist, direct link to youtube and any On Demand content related to the search.

Full Series, season and episode information with a list of upcoming shows being broadcast in the next two weeks.

Links to actors appearing in a specific show and information on other shows they are in.

Suggestions. You can thumb up or down a specific show and it will then optionally automatically record similar shows.

Extensive settings for default recording options.

Backwards EPG which goes back a week and you just click on a show that is available from catchup and it automatically plays it.

Express Series link. Automatically set a series link by clicking on a show in the EPG. Default recording options are automatically applied to the series link.

There are probably more advantages, but that should do for starters...

not being in a long term contract with vm any more really suits me. i have many devices i can watch netflix on. apart from the storage being too small on my samsung box i am perfectly happy with it.
also the changes almost everywhere, not just vm , to 18 rather than 12 month contracts is something that really bugs me.

If you sign a new contract with VM, then you only sign up for a further 12 months. It's only brand new connections that have the 18 months contract applied to them.
