Don't suppose you can change the DNS on Tivo? If you can't then it's of no use to me as the UK Netflix hardly has any content.

That is not the case anymore. About 2 weeks ago I logged into UK Netflix and it was almost like it was a different service. I have used both UK and US Netflix in the past

That's not really true these days.

And there is no reason why Tivo can't be used for UK content and your current Netflix devices for other regions.

Netflix offers 1080p streaming. Just checked my Tivo and it says that 1080p/25 is not suppored. Does anyone know if Tivo will be updated to allow 1080p?

I'm not sure what frame rate UK Netflix is but on the US site, most content, including US TV is 24fps.

I'm sorry but yes it is, The US Netflix has way more content than the UK one even now. Sure the UK one has bulked up a bit since it's launch but it still lagging way behind. My devices spend most of their time with the unblock.us DNS in them because of it.

I wouldn't use 2 devices for the 2 regions, i want less boxes under the TV not more :p:

Then just do not use the Netflix app on Tivo then and do not worry about the millions of potential Netflix customers on Tivo who may be happy with what is on offer ;)

If you already have a device fr Netfix, which you obviusly have as you access it already, then for those who already ave a Tivo, you are not adding a new box

Jeez, it was a serious question (which none of you even bothered to answer). What's so hard to understand about me preferring the US netflix and wanting to know whether i'd be able to use it on Tivo instead of the WD TV Live? I don't have Tivo btw but had been considering getting it after reading this news.

sorry your initial post just come across as a criticism. The only network settings are for when you are connecting to your home network. I would assume Netflix would use the Tivo internal internet connection so it does not look like it

They use various rates. It's been "interesting" getting it working on the VM TiVo. :)

You shot yourself in the foot by saying "the UK Netflix hardly has any content" which is blatantly untrue. However, to answer your question, no you can't change the DNS setting.

Hi all

We have just had the confirmation of the Netflix trial plans for TiVo. I can announce that the lucky areas for Netflix to be rolled out and trialed are:
Peterborough
Crawley
Andover
Londonderry
Swindon
A full roll out is being planned for a later stage to cover other areas. We'll keep you posted as soon as we have more information.

Thanks

Reading the info screen on the video settings page says that 1080p is supported if you let the video 'pass through' with no up-scaling from Tivo. But if I tick all the video resolution boxes, it still says that 1080p is not supported. Are you meant to assume that it is and press the continue button?

A roll out before the end of the year isn't too bad. One of my friends still has Virgin but downgraded the tv package to save some money. Had mentioned Netflix as an alternative as they no longer had movies, maybe this will be useful.

It's a Sony KDL40W4000.

It does support 1080p. Tivo is connected to the TV via the output of my Yamaha RX-V1900 AV amp, All my other devices connect to the TV in the same way.

My WDTV Live SMP, 3 different Blueray players and an HTPC are all set to output 1080p via the same connection method and do so with no problem.

Aha, I've come across this with amps before. Check for firmware updates to the amp. Or it may be fine to just set the TiVo to 1080p regardless.

Thanks Spiderplant

It won't let me select 1080p

It has the following options, all selectable

576i
576p
720p
1080i

Then a white line, below which it says

1080p@25fps (not supported) which is not selectable.

TBH it's not a big deal. I use my WDTVLive for Netflix which has the advantage of not being limited to UK Netflix.

I'll try the Tivo app when it arrives and see how it looks. As the amp is an older one with no internet connection, updating firmware (if there is a new version) is not so easy. And I'm a firm believer, where firmware is concerned, if it aint broke... I don't want to fix one problem and potentially cause a whole bunch more :)

Maybe it will fix itself when the next TiVo update arrives?

I just had a look at my settings after I read your post. 1080p also came up as not supported, but I then went through the "test formats" on the right of the screen. It went through all the settings and then allowed you to select 1080p. I'd imagine it would let you do the same. The 1080p was only at 25hz though

As it's only at trial stage, full details have not yet been confirmed. The BBC suggested the following:

Just tried it on my bedroom setup where the tivo video out doesn't go through the AV amp; it goes directly to an HDMI input on the TV (5.1 audio is via Tivo's optical out to the amp).

I get the same problem; 1080p not supported. The TV is an older model than the lounge one; Sony 40W2000, but still is 1080p capable. I have a second WDTV Live SMP, and that connects at 1080p just fine, as have previously connected Blueray players.

Another HDMI conundrum.

God knows what's going on then. I'm assuming you went through the test bit as I said. Did it say "If you see an image press thumbs up 3 times" when it went through each output setting on the test section? Just trying to think why it allowed me to do as i said but won't let you. I run the Tivo box via HDMI through a Sony surround sound system by the way but wouldn't think that alters anything regarding the Tivo setting we're on about. Sorry to others on this thread if this is going astray from the original topic.

I did the test and it went through the different resolutions.... 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i.

It said to press Thumbs up once if you saw an image which I did on all the above resolutions. It then did the final one (1080p I presume) and the screen went blank followed by an unsupported resolution notice.

It only said to press thumbs up once for each resolution, not three times.

I just tried it again and it was press thumbs up once. **** knows where i got three times from!. I do use reading glasses so maybe i need my eyes tested again :erm: It still went through to the 1080p resolution though

Interesting. Where does it show the 24fps?

I know a lot of US Netflix, both film and TV shows, are 24fps, but not sure what most of the UK content is. (I think Spiderplant said somewhere that it varies?)

I have my WD box set to output 1080p/24 and it works fine for all Netflix regions.

That makes sense as that is a US TV show so will be in 24fps.

I assume this is the version of the Netflix app we have got and it does switch frame rates according to the content it receives.

Yes that is the US version, but I would have thought the VM would have been similar, as that is the one added to the US Tivo Premier, which the VM Tivo is based on. I guess they must have modified it. But by the sounds of it, they have ported over the ability to play the frame rate that the content is in.

Wish I was in the trial area.

They have a right mish-mash of rates. It's at least all these: 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30.

I think that's because Netflix can't modify or pick and choose the content format that they get from the providers.

I read an article on the Netflix technical blog about it some time ago. And on another forum today, someone asked why, say, Danish subtitles are optional on some US films/shows on Denmark Netflix and not on others. It's down to the version they are able to get the rights to and the conditions that come with those rights. It's a bit of a hotch potch and something Netflix are working towards solving.
