TiVo Firmware

Are there still plans to change the middleware in the V HD boxes to TiVo?

Re: TiVo Firmware

There has been nothing announced, so I would say probably not

To be honest, I think it was planned when the cost of TiVo was significantly higher. Since the cost for the 500GB box dropped to pretty much the same as a V HD, it doesn't make much commercial sense to do any more.

Re: TiVo Firmware

shame really, especially with the multiroom streaming capabilities of TiVo. But I suppose that it not exactly the open TV problem Sky had - how much longer is liberate contracted for?

Its a shame though really , multiroom streaming is the perfect product to allow those rooms with non PVR's the ability to watch recordings especially when you consider that the VHD is offered as part of VM's collections and a second TIVO is an additional expense.

I agree a second TiVo should be standard on premium or vip collections if they are pretty much the same cost.

Liberate went out of business years ago. Their software is now supported by Seachange, and will be for as long as necessary.

Or TiVo Stream

Re: TiVo Firmware

How about dropping VHD and replacing it with the TiVo Mini?

Re: TiVo Firmware

It is a shame if they have dropped this idea. I don't need (or want) a second pvr but would love to be able to stream stuff from the main TiVo downstairs. Hopefully Virgin will look at the TiVo Mini technology as a potential solution.

Multiroom streaming or whole home DVR as its more commonly called in the US was released for that exact reason , not everyone wants or needs more than one recordable box plus its more costly very often both in setup costs and ongoing monthly sub's. The only drawback with TIVO mini is that if you watch live TV it requires one of your DVR's tuners I believe.

Re: TiVo Firmware

MM is right, at the moment the Mini requires one of your DVR Tuners at all times but TiVo are planning to add dynamic tuner allocation in near future.

The reason I like my V HD so much in the bedroom is because it is so quiet, I'm a really light sleeper and anything with an hard drive in that might kick in randomly during the night would be really annoying, it's for this reason that I would like the TiVo software on it.
P.s. I used to have the sa v drive in the bedroom and I had to turn it off at the wall before I went to sleep, it was like close encounters of the 3rd kind some nights.

Tivo seems really quiet to me. Can't hear the one in the lounge or the bedroom.

And as the Hard Drive is continually recording, there is no 'kicking in' taking place.

Some time ago Berkett, the now ex Vm boss, did state that was VM's in intention, but nothing came of it. Since then VM's bosses and now the new Liberty team, have stated their intention to do away with standard boxes altogether and put the software in the cloud. Whether it actually happens, we'll have to wait and see.

I think they should just use tivo 1tbs, a 1tb hdd cant be much more expensive than a 500gb.

Yes but it's a good excuse to charge more for the product!;)

According to the virgin forum site there are going to be an update to the TIVO hand in hand with the Netflix trials. At the moment only to the trial area but when the Netflix app is made fully available, will go out to everyone.

Though to be honest don't see much of any significance that will make everyone here happy.

So, what’s new with TiVo?

Even more great entertainment at your fingertips with Netflix.

You can now watch Netflix using your TiVo box if you’re a Netflix customer already or by registering at www.netflix.com/virginmedia. To see what’s on Netflix hit the Home button, go to Apps & Games > TV & Movies, and select the Netflix icon. You can also find Netflix films and shows using TiVo search.

Say hello to your more energy-efficient, money-saving TiVo box.

To save on energy (and your monthly bills), your TiVo box will now automatically go into Standby if you haven’t used it for four hours. To change the default to save more energy or to switch this off go to Help & Settings > Settings > Devices > Power Saving Settings.

To wake your TiVo box up again just press the <Home> or <Power> button on your TiVo remote.

This means you won’t need to switch your TiVo box off at the mains every night as it will help save energy itself now. Even when saving energy your TiVo box will wake up to make any recordings you’ve requested.

It’s easier to find the stars and shows you love with WishList™.

We’ve made WishLists™ even easier to set up. Just let TiVo know the actors, directors or shows you can’t bear to miss and TiVo will automatically record anything that fits the bill. And you can do it without interrupting what you’re watching.

We’ve even redesigned the WishList™ menus in HD, so they look that little bit nicer.

Clever TiVo will make even better Suggestions for you.

TiVo will suggest more of the shows and films you love based on the stuff you record and give the Thumbs Up.

Discover your new Discovery Bar.

Your brand new Discovery bar makes it much clearer why we’ve suggested films and programmes for you to watch, whether it’s a live sports event, it’s similar to other programmes you’ve enjoyed, or simply because our team have handpicked it for you to enjoy.

Accessibility

We’ve now introduced high contrast displays for some of our screens, these include our full screen guide, mini guide and channel banner.

To turn this on go to Home >Help & Settings > Settings > Display and Subtitles > High Contrast Display

I hope they have added the other HD screens that the US Premier got a few months ago; My Planned Recordings and Manage My Series Links.

I wonder why there was no mention of them?

They have just picked some tent-pole features there.
