About time TiVO had an update!

It is slow, clunky and a nightmare to navigate the on demand. We also need the qwerty keypad as an option. I would happily buy an official one, rather than the imported american version with different buttons.

Seriously though, it really needs a speed update and some animations to smooth things up. Also the apps are totally useless. I was looking at the latest Sony TV the other day and its interface is light years ahead...

Re: About time TiVO had an update!

I want the HD menu screens that the US Tivo got a while back to replace the remaining SD screens on the VMN Tivo.

It can be a little slow at times, so wouldn't mind a speed increase. But I wouldn't want to move to a slightly faster alternative STB that didn't have the functionality of Tivo.

I have no problems with the menu structure; it's part of the price you pay for extra functionality.

I never use the apps (nothing relevant to me) and very rarely use On Demand or Catch Up.

Now that LG have brought VM, I wonder if they will hold off paying for any more TiVo updates, or wait until the TiVo contract expires and then bring in Horizon.

The same thought had crossed my mind.

There are plenty of TiVo software updates in the works. Don't worry VM are sticking with TiVo.

A lot of the changes to the US TiVo recently has been in part due to the changes that VM got added. Example some of the new HD screens.

Yeah, really could do with a rocket up the backside. That's what really annoys me about the Tivo.

Also like to not have to go through several button presses to cancel a planned recording from the mini-epg when the silly thing accidentally sets something to record whilst flicking through.

Are we likely to see some this side of 2014 lol?

Only thing that annoys me on TiVo is that bloody red ring when it hangs as you can't do anything. Other than that my Samsung TiVo box has been quite reliable.

When you say recently, you actually mean October last year - ten months ago. That is when the US TiVo got the HD menus we are missing and the improved clash management.

I want one thing only, the "Change channel at start" option.

I really miss that and would go back to my old V+ box in an heartbeat if they still did them..

Do you mean on reminders? If so, it does, doesn't it?

No it wants me to record it and remind me, I want it to change to that channel so I don't forget. I don't want the hassle of having to go through various menus to delete something I just watched..

Where is Carl Waring when you need him? :D

'Various menus'?

One button press to My Shows, select the show and then a one button press to delete. Done.

OK maybe I'm being a touch lazy.
But the wife who has M.E. and doesn't always remember viewing times could set up her evenings viewing and sit back and relax knowing the TV would take care of itself.

BTW.. I see a certain Carl Waring pops up on the Digital Spy forums now..

I saw a post a while back making a similar case such as the one you make for your wife and understand it,

But wouldn't it be just as easy to set recordings up for everything and just access them from My Shows? Especially as I'm sure many of them are series, so the recording only has to be set up once.

I seem to remember a discussion a good while back that said that they do auto switch to the reminded channel on Tivo, but as I don't use them, I can't say for sure.

Tivo was never designed with reminders in mind; they weren't considered necessary on a PVR where all three tuners were able to record. VM listened to those who wanted them and I think made a good job of including them in a software concept that was alien to Reminders, even though they don't work exactly like they do on the V+.

That was the only way TiVo could implement the reminder facility.

Yep, that one has been out for some time now, that update also moves the series-link indexing to the background (no more 6 minutes waits when changing recording priorities):

Now that will be a big bonus. My re-indexing takes way longer than 6 minutes, so I only do it when absolutely necessary and do something else whilst it is being done.

You can effectively do this in the background by initiating it from the TV Anywhere iPad app.

Pathetic box then.

I hate the way it works.

I want reminder without record.

Now that is something that really makes me mad, feel like kicking the box out the window at times because of the stupid remind and record and no remind only.

Wish VM would come out with a decent box.

Tivo is OK but nothing spectacular.

Have to say I get more annoyed with the box than I don't get annoyed.

The box has nearly gone through the window loads of time.

No wonder so many friends and family when used mine or a few other friends boxes have said they won't change to a Tivo box.

is there anyway to view the tv schedule when watching a recorded show? I click ok button and it brings up the mini guide. I try to close it and it stops the recording.

most annoying.

Yes there is. Pressing the Guide button will load the guide up and show the recording in the top right of your screen. As you say pressing the OK button brings up the mini guide, on both you can 'info' programmes.

To get rid of the guide/mini guide without stopping the playback just press the button under the Guide button in both cases and it will get rid of the mini guide and enlarge to full screen your recording that you're watching when it exits the ordinary guide :)

I hope that makes sense :D

It's because on the TiVo the box is able to use all 3 tuners so the only way to ensure the tuner is free is to set a recording. On the V+ box there is always a tuner dedicated to live TV.

How are you trying to exit the mini guide? If you press TV it will end the recording but if you press clear (below 7) it will close the mini guide and continue playing back :)

As well as Ben B's advice, the mini guide will close itself in about 15 seconds if that helps?

Re: About time TiVO had an update!

Hope they concentrate on speed and performance with any upgrade and not fancy apps which nobody uses. The VHD and Sky boxes are lightening quick in comparison. Maybe it needs dejunking of useless features and just concentrate on recording tv programmes.

Would like to see Iplayer go as it clearly doesn't work that well and PQ is poor. Again the cheaper VHD box is superior for catch up. Also it'd nice if they'd let Tivo (DVR) Commander work again. It did no harm and they've failed to come up with an official alternative.

Stephen 18-08-2013 12:48

Re: About time TiVO had an update!

iplayer works great and PQ is great on my TiVos.

I am sure that working on the stability and speed are top priority for VM/TiVo to work on.

Re: About time TiVO had an update!

The recording features of the tivo are good.
I like the appearance of the menus.
Things which aren't up to scratch are:

It seems to get very warm even on standby
It is very slow to boot up when turned off
Ondemand is slow and cumbersome to navigate.

Android needs some official loving! (app)

I've been having the slow downs, only as of recent though (last month onwards).
My biggest gripe is having to go from Live TV to an information screen to change recording details rather than do it all on screen within a frame.
