At that price its a complete rip off.

Re: Sky announces Now TV set-top box

If you could just use it as a smart TV adaptor it's not bad for a tenner. but you have to sign up for a nowTV account to activate it. I can't find out for sure if you have to keep paying beyond the free trial to keep it working.

£10 for an iPlayer, Demand 5 and Spotify box, not too bad.

Ordered one to mess around with anyway, it comes with an HDMI so if its useless I've only wasted £6.

When you get it let us know what its like

I've now ordered one too.

This seems to imply you don't /need/ to keep on paying past your free trial
http://community.nowtv.com/t5/NOW-TV...120062#U120062

The site is clearly being hammered today though it was an effort to get to the /pay/ part

the Roku cost a lot more than a tenner. Wonder how long before there is a firmware hack

"You will need a NOW TV account to access the box, you do not need an active account to access other channel on the box."

Seems pretty clear to me.

Get an account (free) cancel before the trial is up and it will still work.

. So if movies are your thing, sign up to a 30 day free trial, then it's just £8.99 per month for the first 3 months
this makes me think you do not even need to sign upto the free trial only if you want sky movies just get the membership to sky now

I see from further reading the account you set up is with the free trial so they hope you forget and pay the 9 quid

I'm sure if many people feel the same as you and the general consensus is that its too costly they'll review prices or look to change the offering.

You will need to create a Roku UK account to use NOW TV with Roku.
now looking on the Roku site it appears that this offers you a massive amount of extra content and not only that is shows you Sky are selling this for 40 quid less than RRP so it looks like it is a rebanded fully functional Roku box I hope this turns out to be the case

"Do I need a Roku account to access other apps?

When using your NOW TV Box, you do not need to set up a Roku account to access apps in the Roku Channel Store. A Roku account is only required if you use a Roku box."

http://help.nowtv.com/HelpArticle?id...20TV%20Box%7C1

Mind you I will most likely set up a Roku account to get the full benefit. I suspect though that the amount of Roku apps you can install will be very limited.

that shows there is access to the hidden menu which means you should be able to side load apps. I hope that devs will take the job on and either this device will be flashed to a stock Roku or apps will simply be sideloaded

I imagine within a few weeks we will see ways of making better use of this

Re: Sky announces Now TV set-top box

well info on some sites are starting to show Dev mode is available which means in theory side loading should be possible. I have sourced a Plex zip to try when mine arrives which will certainly be a good start. In theory is should be relatively easy to build your own Netflix channel ( if you have a clue I do not lol ) so hopefully there will be access to files

Well I got it.

Interface is fast, iPlayer is great as always, Demand 5 is by far their best on any platform (probably nicer to use than iPlayer), VEVO works great and so does Revision3. Remote has a weight to it and the buttons are well made.

Hopefully Roku gets YouTube, ITV & 4oD and Rdio make their app available in the UK.

All in all a great buy for a tenner, especially for people who don't already have a streaming box.

I mainly watch the Sky entertainment channels and Sky Movies on top or the freeview stuff , I'm fed up with the cost of sport at the minute so this could be a viable alternative if I decide to drop the sport.

I just wish there as an official youtube app.

I use the Plex App every day pretty much and have added Youtube to it. There are other apps you can sideload but it only allows one at a time. There is a code the nowtv just refuses to give up that allows syncing it with Roku but its well worth the tenner

I ordered one of these yesterday, and tried it on my laptop till I get it.
I'm a bit annoyed that there's no voucher codes to get it for £1 a month for 3 months and such like a lot of others have had. but I suppose I can just re-register with other cards to get a few months for free.

I noticed it won't work on jailbroken ipads and such, which is a shame as I could link the account to my niece and nephews ipads when I jailbreak them.

Sky sports day passes are being given away free with multipacks of Carling lager for NOWTV in your local stores, it's great deal I bought 3 * 10 packs today so that's 3 days of Sky sports in the bank not bad at only £7 a pack.

They have to be redeemed by middle of June.

I got my hands on a NowTV box for the first time last week. It's well worth a tenner of anyone's money (and you can get £2 cashback through TopCashback!). Really nice little thing, very responsive and nice simple controls.

Plex works like a charm, as do the iPlayer and 4oD apps - a very cheap and effective way to make older/cheaper tellys 'smart'.

I've actually now ordered a Roku LT (which is the same thing with less locked down firmware and a USB port as I understand it) - really looking forward to having a play with the extra apps.

Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. have been added taking the channels available in the Entertainment pack up to 12. ITV Encore will be added shortly. My understanding is they are looking to push the entertainment pack up to 15 channels with the 2 new channels rumoured to be History and National Geographic. If there is any truth in this I'd seriously consider binning pay TV and replacing it with NOW TV. Those 15 channels plus Freeview and either Netflix or Amazon Instant would pretty much cover all my viewing needs at a fraction of the price I currently pay.

Now TV is a good service what stops me saying its excellent is its inferior stream quality when compared to Netflix , whilst the quality is perfectly acceptable it would be nice to have Netflix PQ with 5.1 audio , I saw a rumour recently that Sky were looking to improve Sky Go streams so I suppose its not beyond the realms of possibility.

Here is a good deal on NOW TV at Argos:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/1588222.htm

NOW TV with 4 months entertainment pass only 12.50!

You could buy 3 for 37.50, have one in each room, and enjoy SKY Atlantic etc... for a whole year. Works out at only 3.12 per month! I suppose however if you take away the cost of the 3 boxes being 30.00 in total, your getting a years worth of pay TV for 7.50, 62p per month. Now that's a bargain.

Just spotted that after going out any buying myself one :D

Plan to keep the 4 months pass until my 50% off deal expires with SKY in March. Last time when my 50% deal expired I cancelled TV, but kept my broadband and phone active advising these would be cancelled too once I'd decided which provider to use for TV. Within 2 weeks they came back offering me 50% off to take a new 12 month contract. In the end it turned out to be more like 60% off when SKY decided to give me broadband for free. At least this time when I cancel I'll have the 4 month pass allowing me to continue enjoying SKY programming until they comeback with a great new deal :D

I think, tbh, that Sky will move towards offering the same deals on "winback" as they offer to new customers, ie top discount of 25% off with a new box on 12 month contract or without the new box without a contract.

Lot's of new customers are joining without discounts on tv so this will be the eventual goal.

Historically Virgin didn't discount and lead on the benefits of faster broadband.

Sky are hoping that if they reduce discounts that the market will reciprocate.

Thanks for sharing. I'm currently one month into a four month pass at the moment. Whilst I have SKY my wife has been using the NOW TV box in the bedroom to watch things like Geordie Shore on catch up.

If you ever get any more of these please share with your Cable Forum chums, they will be greatly received :tu:
