BT reveals Home Hub 5 with ac Wi-Fi

I don't have BT but saw this article and thought it may be of interest to those that do.

Quote:

BT has taken the wraps of its latest Home Hub router, the Home Hub 5, which will be the first of its routers to feature Wi-Fi 802.11ac.

This will be the first of BT's Home Hubs to feature the latest super-fast Wi-Fi 802.11ac standard. Although still not widely supported, ac Wi-Fi is built into the latest raft of laptops such as the new MacBook Air, and it's set to become more widespread very soon. The Wi-Fi will also support dual-band to reduce the chance of interference from other networks.

Hub 5 will also be the first to include a built-in VDSL modem, meaning users of BT's Infinity service will no longer need a separate modem box and a Home Hub, reducing both clutter and power usage. It will also be the first Hub to feature four gigabit Ethernet ports. And, like the Hub 4, the whole package is designed to be slim enough to fit through a letter box, saving you a trip to the post office.

Home Hub 4 came out like three weeks ago, a big kick in the 'nads for early adopters.

the great thing about this is the integrating modem/router into one!

Not really, I would see that as a downside

depends how you see it I guess.

Bad idea because rebooting etc.. but good as you save power, space on your desk and a power socket!

and from my point of view it would be more space on the desk (hub in modem mode and my router), 2 sockets and more power (hub in router mode using more power than standalone modem)

That's how I see it too.

Sky are going down this route as well. :( Just gotta hope my BTO modem don't suffer a premature demise.

Are they? Disappointing. I was planning to use my own router. I'm surprised that Sky are planning to release another device given the new 'hub' has only been out for about 6 months.

ATM, with a separate modem, there are a couple of options for using your own router. With an all-in-one device, if no modem mode is included, you will at least be able to configure it to allow your own modem to piggy-back to the sky hub's DMZ.

However it has been rumoured, since sky's assimilation of Be/O2 subs, that sky are taking steps to make it easy for anyone to be able to connect using their own modem and were even training their support staff to be able to cope with router queries other that those regarding the sky hub.

Of course there is always an outside chance that the new sky hub will be so powerful and feature rich that you won't feel the need to run your own :D

Given the specs of the current device, I am not surprised in the slightest

It's approaching a year in September and longer for some customers. It was first introduced for certain new customers in June last year.

Depends.. I have a Superhub and because of the problems that had, I use a router. Before, I was paying to power one modem and one router. Now, I am paying to power two routers.

Hello. Zee. I know this is offtopic. But while you were trialling the BT Home Hub 4, did you have to send the equipment back?

Don't worry, it won't be hitting the shelves for a while yet.

The Home Hub 3 had an integrated modem too (albeit not VDSL), I do wonder what Openreach's opinion is on this, as until now the separate VDSL modem was their official demarcation point and ISPs were not permitted to change, replace, or modify it.

How is that a downside? There's nothing preventing you from continuing to use a separate modem exactly as before. The previous Home Hubs all had built-in modems and nobody was forced to use them.

Everyone already can, and will continue to be able to use whatever modem they want, although it is not officially approved.

You do not have to use either the supplied modem or router, all-in-one or otherwise (unlike VM)

Those who insist on using the "existing" Openreach standalone modem will be able to find them on eBay for pretty cheap (again though, not officially approved :P)

Unlike VM and the Superhub however, Openreach do not control what modem you use, you can switch back to the old standalone modem or any other compatible modem at any time.

Even if I knew, I would not be allowed to say. Though if it didn't, it doesn't really matter. We don't know yet if Openreach are going to stop supplying the standalone modem on all installs. My guess would be that they continue to give everyone the Openreach modem and certain BT customers are simply instructed to not use it.

One of their recent things mentioned trials allowing third party ISP's to provide all in one kit. I'm sure there will still be instances of openreach providing a modem where the ISP has no integrated one available for that particular service.

sky lagging a bit behind now.

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardwar...ith-ac-wi-fi/1

in terms of using own device openreach have laid out limitations to what can be connected, eg, has to be vectoring capable and support certian specifications.

Sky seem to lagging more than a bit.

Rumour has it that the SR-102 is exactly the same as the SR-101 in the router dept. but has just had a VDSL modem grafted on for DIY installs like ADSL.

Actually had one of these HH5's in my hands Tuesday. It's just waiting for the modem side of it to be certified by Openreach.

Expect it to be released sometime this autumn.

Trialists generally get to keep the equipment. I know of no BT trial where the equipment has had to be returned.

Disappointing that the HH5 still doesn't allow you to connect to the LAN side from the BT-FON WiFi side of the router to test your port forwarding. Even spoke to the trial team on this and apparently they stop it to protect against DDoS!! Least I can use one of the other millions of FON hotspots to test my port forwarding (shame not my own!).

I wasn't asked to send mine back, got a mail to say keep using if you wish even :-)

qasdfdsaq 12-10-2013 14:53

Re: BT reveals Home Hub 5 with ac Wi-Fi

Course, most other ISPs don't even give you that option.

Would have thought it was more a security precaution than just DDoS protection. Might seem a pain for you but that barrier between the FON part and the customer network is the right thing to do
