tesco newsgroups?

Hi,
I have been away from computers and the internet for a good few years
and have just signed up with tesco for phone and internet and was wondering
if anyone knows if they provide newsgroup access?

I called their technical support and they don't seem to have heard of it !!
they kept insisting I meant facebook and saying they could only help
with their own products.

If they don't can someone recommend a good alternative
Thanks

Not in the nick but close. Scotland ;)
I was last with freeserve in 1999 then moved to Scotland and due to
a very heavy workload i just got out of using the computer and never
had to use the internet till retiring last month

Think Virgin is the only ISP that offers free newsgroups/free downloadable stuff!

Once you sort out a provider (use VM so can't help there), have a look at sickbeard and SABnzdb. Sickbeard finds stuff, SAB downloads it. If it's 'new stuff' ;) you're after, set sickbeard to search every few hours and beat the takedowns.

Cheers

If I trace news.tesco.net it actually points to a virginmedia server

Setup described for OE6..

Re: tesco newsgroups?

Some ISPs may provide their own newsgroup servers, or at least a server operated on their behalf. The retention time for content on those ISP servers will only be a few days at most. I have no idea if Tesco bother with their own newsgroup services.

If you need decent newsgroup access, with lengthy retention (excluding the copyright protected stuff that is subject to take down notices), you need to subscribe to newsgroup server providers such as giganews, astraweb, supernews, and many many more. There will be a cost to that subscription. For privacy you may wish to look at providers offering SSL access.

Re: tesco newsgroups?

news.tesco.net returns a ping and it resolves to VM and highwinds and there are set up instructions although they are old

ok I can confirm that news.tesco.net is a valid newsgroup provider I installed grabit to check and on my vm connection it downloaded a grouplist including binary groups.

So yes Tesco does have newsgroups and they are the same as what VM have

Is it valid on a tesco connection, though? news.virginmedia.com doesn't work outside of Virgin's connections so if news.tesco.net points to Virgin, will virgin's own servers detect it as Virgin or not?

I do believe that Tesco used to have a partnership with Virgin to offer dial up (I believe?) but their new stuff is all DSL so likely partnered with someone else. That probably explains why Tesco's news server points to Virgin but it might be a holdover from those dial up times.

Re: tesco newsgroups?

well as I said I set up grabit with the Tesco address and it allowed me access to group list to test it on a Tesco line we will need a Tesco customer. I do not know why the Tesco address would be valid and surely the fact its pointing to highwinds would that not be after dial up?

bit more research shows it appears to be supplied by Cable and wireless as they signed a 5 year deal in 2009 so you may well be correct
