BT are now providing their customers with YouView boxes. They are Freeview combined with IPTV connectivity. You can only currently record Freeview broadcast channels, although an update due in september should remedy this.

The only thing stopping me from going to BT would be the TV service, it looks terrible.

I believe the IPTV thing only works if you have the BT Fibre - I know I can't do it with my box.

Which basically does indeed mean it's just a recording freeview box with catchup tv and a load of on demand stuff.

If you're expecting anything like VM or sky I'd look elsewhere (I've had both of these)

But you wouldn't take any services from anyone but Virgin, so not a good indication of anything.

Having to use some of your internet bandwidth to get anything beyond the basic channels isn't a good option. If your internet went offline so do half your channels. They should at least provision the bandwidth seperate like VM do.

My year (it only worked for 9 months of it) of BT Vision was the most miserable you could imagine. Poor service, poor on-demand selection (episodes missing, few updates) very little UK content, poor picture quality (washed out SD) The list is endless.

As advised, don't touch them with a bargepole.

TalkTalk TV have the better IPTV option at the moment. If BT expand their offering in line with this they may get more interest.

'Your line cannot support Sky tv channels'

Presumably as I'm stuck with adsl (16mb) for the foreseeable future and my exchange has to plans for fibre support.

So I'm not about to switch yet ;)

While I'm sure there are better people out there in non cable land than BT the trouble I had was that when I was with them it was hell getting any internet fault looked at.

So I guess I just keep on paying my £4 a month for my BT vision box until I've saved up enough for a freesat+ HD box :)

That's a shame. Getting Sky TV for a year is a good way of getting the satellite dish and HD box on a pay monthly basis rather than a one off cost. At the end of the contract just use it as a free freeview box with good reception, although you lose the recording option.

I have a sky dish already. I've got a freesat box on the bedroom. I just need to get a recording one for the living room.

I heartily recommend the Echostar HDS 600RS as a Freesat PVR. It has slingbox functionality too, great for streaming the box's output around your house via WiFi (or over the interwebs if you really want to).
