Wonder if this will get banned by the advertising standards like many of their other ads ;) |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
So basically VM are inferring that their cable services are the dog's danglies and xDSL services, which include their own National service, are rubbish.
Criticising a technology used to provide one your own services is a strange tactic indeed. I note no distinction is made between ADSL and VDSL services. So I take it VM are inferring that their cable service is superior to BTO's VDSL service when it just plainly isn't. It seems to me the claims VM make here are just as economical of the truth as their "unlmited" claims. |

Definitely pushing the boundaries or being misleading yet again. My money is on the ad getting banned

Have seen both ads and they are very good, doubt there will be any issue with them.

On another note, take away the emotional element of the content, VM get nominated for a hell of a lot of awards for their cutting edge advertising, but that's for other forums where like minded people appreciate quality in particular segments ie marketing Q - QTX and his soul mates responses......... |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
It'll be banned for the following reason.
Miisleading. They will no doubt have small print to go with it. |

Re: Bolt vs Blot
I've already asked for people to stick to the topic. This also means that flaming and baiting are also OFF TOPIC as is name calling.
Getting rather fed up the same old nonsense all the time.If you don't like what others post PUT THEM ON IGNORE and make an effort to really ignore them. |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
If you say you don't know if you have fibre or not and dont know who your provider is, the microsite still says your connection is slower than virgins fibre broadband, which in many cases would be a lie.

Three off topic posts removed.Any more nonsense and infractions will be the result.

Re: Bolt vs Blot
Just seen the advert and reckon it will be banned because its comparison of other providers excludes fibre products (small print on bottom of ad), yet it is comparing it to its own fibre product and Bolt is wearing a Fibre t-shirt. Misleading!

scared of losing your money are you? :) it is funny when they have to put in the ad "excludes fibre products" of course what they haven't mentioned was how big the film was. if it was any bigger than the one in the ad that took 6 seconds on cable compared to 24 seconds on ADSL, then I would say it could possibly hit the STM that would slow it down enough for ADSL (excludes fibre products) to race to the finish line first. |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
Didn't seem misleading to me.Asdl is to be avoided here in favour of the faster cable network and as a means of NOT having a BT telephone.
Oh and I'd like to say that the reason I'm with VM is because back in the day(and even now) they provided a much more reliable landline service than any of the telcom providers back in the 80s.That hasn't changed in all these years and with all the different guises of Nynex,C&W,Ntl and VM. Some people really should remember that NOT everyone gets a poor service from VM.That many are actually happy with the level of service they have from that company. I'll also point out that any company would be mad to provide all the exceptions and less than perfect parts of their service in a TV ad. |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
Maggy can you keep on-topic please. We are talking about the advert and not some telephone line or reliability you had donkey years ago. Nor do I understand your comment about everyone getting a poor service from VM as this also has nothing to do with the advert or discussion.
We were talking about the advert being misleading due to VM comparing the worst product a company can offer instead of comparing it against the fibre options like it is using as its own comparative. |

---------- Post added at 14:24 ---------- Previous post was at 14:21 ---------- And then, if you have made your complaint, we can wait until the ASA rule whether it's misleading or not, rather than doing so on here till the end of time I, for one, would much prefer that ;) |

Personally i'm not the sort to complain to Ofcom or the ASA but their decisions do interest me, as well as the discussions. I am certain some will make the complaint though. As for what you prefer and trying to dictate that no one should discuss the topic until a decision...do you think you run this forum or something? |
Re: Bolt vs Blot

I however do find your attitude surprising about not complaining to Ofcom or the ASA considering you do so heavily believe the ad is misleading and leaving it to others..I'd have thought you would be the first to do so. |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
IMO there is no need for individuals to complain about any advert as if it compares competitors unfavourably to the advertiser you can bet you bottom dollar that they will find something to complain about. I personally think that they will complain about this ad because to most viewers it is saying VM cable is better than other broadband when FTTC products can be shown to be better in some respects (jitter and upstream certainly and there are no ISP imposed speed restrictions either).
I'll probably stick with cable for now on a cost basis but I'm virtually certain that in my area FTTC would offer a better connection. Plus I hold Openreach in even lower regard than VM. |

Not so long ago it was stated that Virgin Media had 25 adverts banned in the 18 months prior to that post. Just shows that the misleading adverts will get banned by the ASA without needing any input from me. :notme: |

Re: Bolt vs Blot
I've always found the Sky-philes strangely amusing.
I have a vested interest in VM, as I work for them. I also like to ensure that some of the ignorance trying to be passed of as knowledge on here is rebutted with actual facts. I work for VM but I don't have any of their products as I can't get them where I live. I've always wondered what stake the sky-philes have in their conviction, they are just a companym that provide a service and take your money. Why with all the tub thumping and flag waving and frothing of the mouth when criticising VM? I mean when I truly support something it's either because I have a financial or emotional stake in it. I support VM because I work for them, I support Everton because I'm from that city. But to support a service provider that I have no stake in?????? It would be like me banging on about how Scottish Power is better than Npower and mocking those who are customers of Npower, or extelling the virtues of Yorkshire water, and shouting down anyone that says Severn Trent is better. It's all a bit sad really. |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
I suspect that most of those promoting Sky etc. have had their fingers burned by VM in the past and find adverts such as Bolt v Blot so disingenuous as to annoy them.
|
Re: Bolt vs Blot
Just seen the advert, the bit with Richard playing with the train set was very funny (and I thought very subtle). I'd go as far as saying one of their best adverts yet.

Re: Bolt vs Blot
I love Virginnmedia's "Terminology".
They don't have "limits" but you can trigger STM by going over the "Threshold" An now they have created "Regular broadband |

"Find out what speed you need to keep up with your digital life" So first I confirmed there is 2 of us using the internet at home. I then selected all 5 devices being smartphone, desktop, tablet, games console and smart TV. Finally I confirmed we use the internet for catch up TV, emailing & browsing, social networking, downloading music and playing games. The race is over with Blot being blown out of the water. The result from Virgin: "Up to 60 Mb fibre optic broadband is perfect for your needs because...All five of you can play the latest games online and stream and download your favourite music & movies on your tablet and pc - 8 times faster than regular broadband." We manage alright with our 16mb connection with no problems. I find this all very misleading from Virgin. People who don't know any better might be persuaded to commit to a broadband service they don't really need for 18 months. :td: |
Re: Bolt vs Blot
The advert didn't get banned after all and was not deemed to be misleading either
