VM least complained BB provider according to ofcom

For all the noise on here from ex and present customers it appears that VM is the least complained about Broadband provider?

These are just complaints made to Ofcom.

meaningless.

All that's in the list is Virgin and Sky.

Put your postcode in.

you get Virgin in a big pop up every time.

Anyway, although it may be 'approved by OFCOM' it's not run by them, so isn't this a bit off topic?

The report itself is from OFCOM and is published here http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/mar...1-jan-mar-2013 - cable.co.uk are just reporting what it says

What I'll be asking them as well as the not listing the phone only option is, where it says The providers covered here are BT Retail, Sky, TalkTalk Group, Virgin Media and Orange/EE. is that meaning they were the only ones that were compared for the result list.

meaning that there's a possibility that another provider would (if they were in the mix) hold the award for being the least complained about.

They cover more than that:

Quote:

Providers
3 Mobile AOL Be BT Eclipse EE John Lewis O2 Plusnet Post Office Primus Saver Sky T-Mobile TalkTalk Tesco Tooway Top Up TV Virgin Media Vodafone
For a phone only search for me I get Primus, Vonage, Tesco

But again, if you have issues with cable.co.uk, it's irrelevent to the OFCOM report

Re: VM least complained BB provider according to ofcom

These are just based on reports to Ofcom, which does not necessarily reflect how many customers of each isp have actually complained directly to the isp. For instance I have not complained to Ofcom but I did let Watchdog know of my issues.

Even so, lets look at how pathetic the reality is compared to the headline stat of VM being the least complained about:

Quote:

Sky took fourth spot with just 0.1 complaints for every 1,000 customers, while Virgin Media was named the least complained-about major provider - with 0.08 per 1,000 subscribers - for the first time since the second quarter of 2011.
So ten people out of a thousand complained about Sky while eight in one thousand complained about Virgin. Hardly a massive difference yet the VM groupies will shout about it and VM may even use it in its advertising.

There is also the fact that VM probably had more complaints overall but these stats are averaged out over 1k customers.

---------- Post added at 18:10 ---------- Previous post was at 18:00 ----------

Don't forget the details of the Pay TV complaints:

Quote:

Figures 8 and 9 show that Ofcom received fewer complaints over the period in
question about Sky compared with the other two providers,

Virgin Media also generated above industry average complaint levels over the period.
More complaints about VM than Sky, didn't see you shout about that part ;)

These complaints are about complaints to the provider.
Each provider is required to register a customers complaint about whatever to do with their service, OFCOM then collates these to produce these reports. It's not just about complaints escalated to OFCOM.

At Sky, any time a customer complains about something to do with the service or a person who is part of the business, a complaint is registered on the account. I believe all other providers who are regulated by OFCOM need to have similar processes in place.

I'm sure BenMcr or some other Virgin staff member will be able to confirm if Virgin have a similar process.

I'd maybe re-read OFCOM's own page where the report is published ;)

The data only covers complaints that consumers have chosen to report to Ofcom, and does not represent complaints consumers may have made directly to their providers or to other agencies (e.g. Alternative Dispute Resolution schemes). As such it will only provide a partial picture of complaints relating to any provider.

Gary L 28-06-2013 09:21

Re: VM least complained BB provider according to ofcom

See. like I said. meaningless :)

It's a bit like me saying 0.03 out of every 1,0000 people complain to me about their symptons.
when 60.56 out of every 1,000 people complain to their doctor.

the true figures could be
0.57% of every 1,000 EE customers complaints directly to EE/orange.
and 90.46% of every 1,000 Virgin Media customers complain directly to Virgin Media.

and nobody complains directly to Sky.

Obviously not the case, as above posts show.

Also have you ever tried to register a complaint with VM? Its nigh on impossible. I have tried emailing a complaint and writing in, both of which got no reply so guessing also not logged. Trying to log a complaint on the phone I was told cannot be done, they just have call resolution peeps who try and resolve your problem instead of noting down your complaint. If you just want to complain about recent issues or treatment, there appears to be no actual complaint route to get a complaint noted.

I don't doubt that VM are not the only one with this method of stopping complaints being logged.

eljay 28-06-2013 11:37

Re: VM least complained BB provider according to ofcom

Or on the otherhand you could interpret it that a higher percentage of Sky customers had problems of sufficient mangnitude to escelate their complaints to OFCOM, in comparison to VM.

Two more per 1000 customers is hardly a massive difference.

Unhappy customers vs those that complaints really needs some weighting done although it would be an impossible task. I would like to bet that customers who take a particular provider fit in to certain categories that make them more or less likely to complain. For example TalkTalk customers may tend to be customers who are frugal with their money and also likely to complain in the hope of compensation or saving further money. Just an example but you get my drift. Some may be the type that follow complaints through further to Ofcom.

Complaints are logged in VM, but doesn't mean staff won't try and resolve them at the point of contact. Saying 'I want to complain' doesn't suddenly change how the issue is dealt with.

If you make a complaint via Customer Services, and it's something they fix, it's logged as complaint and then marked as resolved.

If you make a complaint via email or letter it is logged when it's processed - there isn't any stage when it's blocked. Unfortunately as people use Complaints as first line customer services, then it can take time to deal with unresolved issues.

If you complain about something to the resolution team, again it's logged, but they are there to resolve issues where they can.

Either "Everbody Haters" or "Neutrals" who realise that all ISP's have there faults from time to time. So say it as they see it from their own perspective but on a case by case basis without presumption or bias.

That's because you have a balanced and mature approach to life, good on you. Same here VM cheese me off sometimes but not enough to make me change provider and spend my life dissing them. On another subject I absolutely detest an airline company as they have left me in the lurch so many times, however I voted with my feet and will never use them again but do not swan around their web site dissing them as life's too short!

Have to agree on that although I would have thought it was down to moderators to slap the ones that start the topics going off-topic....

As i posted earlier i am enjoying watching the children fight amongst themselves. Great fun, and before Qt what ever his name is says i am posting this as a member of vm it has nothing to do with who i work for and more to do with the childish antics of those involved who have never grown up past puberty
.

when you guys have something grown up to say i will get involved in the real conversation until then i will just  at you all

Think what you want, and if you think that was a personal attack then i wonder how you would feel if i did carry out a personal attack on you :erm:

As i have said bring a grown up argument to the table and we can all debate it but at the moment the willy waving of mine is bigger than your's response is an indication of the childish attitudes prevalent of those who would not have a clue if the debate became grown up..

Sirius listen to yourself. You have brough no debatable arguments to the table in you last posts and instead you are just calling others children. Doing exactly what you are telling others to while you try and sound authoritative. Come back to the table when you have looked up the word hypocrisy ;)

Re: VM least complained BB provider according to ofcom

Having a few mins off from some rather mind numbing noise calculations, I've had a quick browse through the report and here are my thoughts re the VM/Sky arguements (for what they're worth):
  • Across all the sectos covered (apart from pay monthly mobiles) the long term trend is complaints are dropping.
  • Fixed telephone lines - VM & Sky are ahead of the game, with Sky upping theirs considerably to be just about on a par with VM
  • Fixed broadband - VM were performing better (half the complaints of SKY), but seemed to have taken their eye off the ball over the last 18 months or so whilst Sky improved. However over the last quarter this trend seems that it may be reversing - next quarter will confirm the trend. Sky and VM are both well below the industry average.
  • Pay TV - Sky have consistantly been the best performers, but over the last couple of years VM have been 'closing the gap' with the last quarter showing a marked improvement to bring them below the industry average and close enough to SKY to almost question if the difference between them is down to the statistical error associated with such small samples.
So there's my take on the numbers. The numbers don't mean that much anyway. We don't know how many complaints each company receives which would've enabled us to put the OFCOM report in to much better context. For example, if VM are as bad as some on here would have us believe then they must be good at 'resolving' complaints otherwise I would've expected the numbers of customers complaining to OFCOM to be higher. On the other hand, from my own experience of Sky as a customer (poor quality TV equipment) and how Mrs G was treated following the Sky/BSB merger, I'm again surprised that the Sky numbers aren't higher. The one thing I do take from the report is if the numbers for VM and Sky are so low then the other providers must be terrible!!

Cheers

Grim
