Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Could I have some advice please. I need an eye test but I'm unsure who to go to. I of course know of specsavers, optical express, boots and vision.. something:erm:. I don't want to wear glasses 24/7 so I was thinking contact lenses but again I haven't got a clue what to ask, do :(

I go to specsavers, don't need glasses so I don't know about options. Do you wear glasses at the moment?

thenry 09-05-2013 23:15

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

No. I've never had my eyes tested or worn glasses or contact lenses. For the last year I've had trouble seeing things at a distance and yesterday I thought something grey was brown.

Go to who you want really. I don't think there is a big difference between the high street brands. If you get prescribed glasses, which seems likely, you won't to have to wear them 24/7 unless you want too. They can tell you what to ask about contact lenses.

Just go into the store and ask for an appointment. They'll take it from there :)

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

I'm short sighted, I only wear them for driving or at the cinema. Depressing though when I take them off and everything goes back to murky-blurry vision. I go to a local optician so not much help there sorry.

I went to SpecSavers for my last pair, and I was surprised just how much cheaper they were than the local on I used to go to. I was impressed. Not going back to the local one :)

I don't mind glasses but I'd like to avoid wearing them and instead opt for clearer better vision through contact lenses 24/7. i did just go onto specsavers site and they have a load of brands, pricing, i dont have a clue and then theres something about curve. I'm guessing thats something which will be found out through an eye test.

Do you have contact lenses? do you know which brands are best or is it each ot their own?

I'm short sighted too :D i think :erm: yeah thats something I want to avoid, if i can have clearer vision 24/7 through contact lenses I'd rather that than some annoying pair of glasses.

Personally, I've never had lenses. I don't like the idea of the faff putting them in and taking them out (or forgetting to take them out when ******ed). Plus: I like the intelligent look ;)

I was in Boots once with a friend sorting out his eyes. I tried a few pairs of glasses on which were on display. they didn't look good on me :(

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Specsavers, and most opticians, have a free months trial for contact lenses.

I quite like Specsavers website too. You can upload a picture of yourself and "try on" different glasses.

Make an appointment for an eye test and they'll give you good advice based on your needs. I used specsavers for the first time this month and found them a lot less pushy than Boots were previously.

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Have to agree re Specsavers - buy one pair, get second pair free, so I bought a nice pair of titanium rimless glasses, which were under half the price of my local optician, and got a spare pair as well.

I was so pleased that I went in again this week and got two pairs of prescription sunglasses for my summer hols, both Tommy Hilfiger frames, one aviator style, and the other Wayfarer style, total price £125.

Bargain.

How many eyes have you got? :D

I'm picking up a couple of pairs tomorrow, one pair of varifocals and and the other pair varifocal sunglasses. Total cost to me £74. I'm lucky that my employer covers the cost of lenses and £25 towards the frames.

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

I'd go to Specsavers too. Buy one get one free is a great deal. Can also get one pair made as sunglasses.

Contacts can be good but I can never wear them for more than 8-9 hours.

Just easier wearing my glasses all the time.

coulsontom 10-05-2013 00:45

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

I use Specsavers but they're all franchises anyway so it all depends on who's running it.

I have glasses and contact lenses, had lenses for 7 years.
I recently got a very small style on my left eye which took a while to disappear, and since lenses have been a bit annoying but on the whole they're v good.

If you're going to be sat in front of a computer screen for long periods tho, you can develop headache's, I do, but depends how strong your prescription is I suppose.

I use Specsavers, I pay £15ish a month which gives me a set of monthly contacts (they're not the cheapest as my eyes dry quickly!) solutions, etc. and I get a £70 discount off glasses once a year and includes all of my sight tests which I think is very reasonable indeed.

Yes. I think the offer is every 2 years m8. But you get £70 off or put money towards designer glasses as part of contact lens contract.

There are 3 different types of lens depending on what suits, how much air they let through etc... I have middle ones. Then you can get fancy 24 hour ones and such like.

They are good tho, like if your prescription changes they always give u new lenses to replace your old ones immediately, so you end up with a back up few sets of lenses just in case u lose some out n about.

or u could get dailys.

I always keep a few boxes of dailies to hand for if I just fancy wearing them the odd night rather than opening a brand new pack, or if I don't intend on going home ;););););)

How do you know you need glasses?
I'm 46 & get my eyes checked every 2 years I personally think my eyesight is worsening and yet they say its fine, in fact last time I got mine checked I was told I was in the top 5% of the country in my age group for near perfect eyesight, yet I think its poor, who am I to argue with a pro.
My eyes take longer to focus on distance & I have 3 scratches on my right eye from a work accident 15 years ago which causes a grey floating shadow on white backgrounds.
Don't be so impatient to wish your eyesight away, or self diagnose. You may think you need them and then it turns out you don't.

I have free NHS eyetests every 2 years at a High St optician, but then use the Optical Voucher at Specsavers (BOGOF) whenever the frames fail. Between frame failures I use a local shop called specs4less who replace the varifocal lenses in a couple of days at a fraction of Specsavers prices.

I go to Specsavers but then I have a family member working for them so I get even more off in family rates.;) I couldn't afford varifocals and photocromic lenses otherwise.

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

I go to specsavers,

Buy one get one free is good value and the range of glasses is very good.

I also wear contact lenses but I buy daily disposables off the internet from Vision Direct.

jamiefrost 10-05-2013 12:17

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Go to specsavers as well, but I use extended wear contact lenses. Take them out every two weeks and wear glasses for a weekend then put them back in for another two weeks. New pair everyone, hated messing about with solutions and putting in and taking out everyday.

Get my lenses form the internet either asda or postoptics

You could do a lot worse than Norman Cloughs - they do a very thorough eye test. Incidentally, if there's any history of glaucoma or similar in your family, you get a free eye test. They're the people who discovered my glaucoma, because they're thorough, and they're who I went to when my retina detached (though I didn't know that was what was wrong!).

2 years ago I decided to try out visionexpress. Lovely service. I didn't have an appointment I just walked in to browse their glasses. I got more than a viewing. The staff squeezed me in for an eye test and they offered very good guidance on glasses more than I received at Specsavers.

I revive this thread because I want to buy some new glasses and I'm looking online. Has anybody got experience with straight frames above each ear.

https://visual-click.com/en-int/prod...02qv-1bo1o1-56

Do these type fall off? I normally get glasses with curve round the ear, wrap round the top part of the ear.

You do know you can swap the glasses in the first 100 days if you are not happy for any reason

I don't own a printer. I normally go library for all my print outs. To save the hassle of printed returns I thought may be somebody on here has experience with straight above the ear glasses.

Yes, I had a pair. Don’t do it. They will blow off your face the first strong wind of autumn … as mine did last January, 2 months after I got them. They hit the ground and slid, took a couple of deep scratches and needed replaced.

Yeah, they looked lovely. I guess some people might possibly have a skull the right shape to magically hold them in place but in my case sadly not.

I tried on a pair of this style, and they felt "odd". But the assistant said that they are heated and the arms moulded to fit the head. But she said that for them to sit properly, I would have to opt for "thinner and lighter" lenses. Not an option for the varifocals that I require.

Incidentally, for the past few years our family have been getting our specs from the local ASDA.

The mould adjustment is done when collecting the glasses. When ordered online the only person I'm in contact with is the courier

How on earth is the fit checked. Every pair I have ever had ,and have been wearing them all life. Have needed adjusting to fit . Never mind correctly positioning the lenses. Different even when getting two pairs at the same time .

I just called vision express that booked me in for a eye test, my last had expired some months ago and legally I'm not allowed to give my expired eye test results. Not sure how true that is because these online retailers have the option to input your test results without providing evidence. Anywho vision express offer free moulding. It doesn't matter if the glasses are purchased elsewhere.

I kind of like these

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

I think it’s got a fair bit more straightforward down the years but I’ve never really fancied it either. Mind you, I have quite a complex prescription with a fair degree of astigmatism, and I suspect most of them wouldn’t touch my case at all.

Taf 16-08-2025 12:04

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

A heads-up for any driver looking at contacts for reading. A neighbour has been done after hitting a pedestrian (low speed, no injuries) because she wasn't wearing her specs for distance. She was seen to put them on after the incident, so was asked to read a number plate at a distance. Total fail.

Stephen 16-08-2025 14:20

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

I've just decided to try contacts again. Had them from 2001-2011 but my diabetes control hadn't been great and I ended up needing a lot of laser treatment on the back of my eyes, injections jn my eyes and then a vitrectomy surgery on each eye so contacts were off the cards.

Now over two years since my kidney and pancreas transplant my diabetes is considered in remission due to the perfectly functioning new pancreas. So I went for a trial last week, had to try multifocal lenses with the left and bit strong for distance and the right stronger for reading due to barely being able to read with my left eye as the surgery didn't work to get my central vision corrected.

All went well and they were happy so first payment of 3 months and then a monthly DD of £34.67 a month with an offer on till August 31st of 50% off the 3 month inital payment. 20 pairs a month daily disposable lenses.

Felt contacts were needed as I have been playing in Scotland's transplant football team and can't wear glasses while playing so really couldn't see much.

thenry 16-08-2025 14:44

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

You're a brave man. I'd call it a day if I needed such treatment.

Stephen 16-08-2025 15:20

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Haven't had anything done to them in over 8 years now and as much as I was told I'd see no improvement to my eyesight, my most recent diabetic eye checks showed a slight improvement and my prescription went down a wee bit too. So as long as this pancreas lasts and works my diabetic eye issues are at bay.

I've had so much poking and prodding to my eyes that putting in contacts is a doddle, lol. I just get fed up taking my glasses off to read and swapping glasses that multifocal contacts seems like the best solution. Though I have been told not to wear every day and not more than 8hrs, as my eyes do get dry quite quickly. Which is why I've only got 20 pairs a month instead of 30.

Mr K 16-08-2025 21:24

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Varifocal contact lenses never worked for me, think it depends on how strong your prescription is. I've gone for 'monovision', which is one contact for reading, one for distance. Not perfect but your brain levels it out after a few weeks. Still preferable to glasses or risking laser surgery.

Stephen 16-08-2025 23:02

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Oh my prescription is fairly strong.

Dude111 17-08-2025 01:29

I really would like NEW glasses but I have hesitated because the last few times I have asked for CLEAR PLAIN GLASS,they always give me something with filtering in it and hurts my eyes like crazy!!

Its not easy these days if you know what you want specifically!!

Stephen 17-08-2025 01:32

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

Why plain lenses. You get allsorts of refection and stuff. I always get thinned lenses and coated with anti-reflective/antiglare and antiscratch.

thenry 18-08-2025 20:50

Re: Eye Test, Contact Lenses & Glasses

My prescription has changed. It's not a massive change but the optician said it's a small significance. I don't really want to buy new glasses as much as I like the Prada pair.

For now I've brought a Ray-Ban strap lanyard for my Ray-Ban glasses. Free shipping, happy days :D
