Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

I have been idly looking at wristwatches on amazon - there's loads on there but do I really need one as 'the time' seems to be everywhere? On computers, smartphones etc

I wouldn't want a Rolex now because apart from being over priced, common, over faked and too high a price for the servicing of them. They might hold their price, that's if you keep them in good condition and a good service history. I wouldn't risk wearing one.

Don't wear one anymore..Probably a reaction against having worked in a environment that was dictated by time at all times. I like not knowing what the time is.:)

Nice piece of kit Hugh :), I'm a bit of a fan of unusual watches having about 8 or 9 amassed so far, most are fairly inexpensive (less than £200) but most are unique looking. My everydayer is a Boccia (all titanium) as I have a habit of smashing them to pieces whilst working on stuff at work, so far this one has proved a tough little bugger

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

Nice - I got mine for my 50th, as I tended to go through most watches in about 2-3 years.

This one has lasted me six years, and hopefully will last a lot longer...

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

A 1963 Omega Constellation which was my fathers. Nice watch, but expensive to run - not much change from £200 for a service a couple of months ago - but worth every penny for the sentimental value alone.

Cheers

Grim

Nope, I do have a nice diesel watch indoors that I sometimes wear when I dress up, but otherwise I get my phone at my pocket, glance at my car clock, sat nav, etc and so on

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

I wear a Casio watch that has solar charging and links to the BT clock in Cumbria. I've had it so long, the plating is wearing off the bracelet but it still keeps perfect time and obviously never needs the battery changing

Oh I'm with you there!

I wear 3 for different occasions.
One is part of a matching set (I can't really read the hands too well - it's all for show).
One is for day-to-day wear.
One is my Dad's - all repaired and very special to me.

I often forget that my phone can also keep the time and that it has a camera, recorder etc, etc. It's not always switched on.
It seems natural to put a watch on before I leave the house.

How nice it is to not give a tiddle what the time is sometimes.

Derek 26-04-2013 08:03

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

Yep I feel lost without a watch on.

Generally I've got a g-shock for work and general wear but I have a shiny, simple one if I'm going anywhere dressy.

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

The only time I wear a watch these days is when out walking in the hills or out on the mountain bikes as you can never rely on phone or GPS not to get nerfed through water ingress. My weapon of choice is a Traser H3 military watch with tritium illumination points on the face. Nice bit of kit if you need something functional and not flashy.

I have a large collection of watches, mostly Russian and Chinese with a handful of Casio's for good measure. One of my latest acquisitions is a Vostok Amphibian 1967 Re-Issue Limited Edition, built like a Russian tank and almost as heavy.

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

Since I don't have other "always on" tech with the time, I do use a watch.

Mine is a "Swordfish" digital with EL backlight ... it cost £1.50 (sale special) at TANDY (how long have they been gone) - it's still on the original battery, has a replacement strap off another old watch - and won't be getting another battery as the buttons are getting very iffy.

But I bought a spare, and not sure if the original battery (in, but isolated with thin plastic) will still be viable, but even if it needs one off a card of 99p store batteries, my next watch will be that one

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

I used to have a digital Star Wars watch when I was younger. The alarm on the watch was the Star Wars theme tune. What amazed me was the ability for the sound of the alarm to travel under water. Back in about 1988 I visited the Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh with my friends. This is an Olympic sized swimming pool. I was in one end of the pool whilst my friend was at the other. Above water there was noway he could hear the alarm but underwater he could hear it clearly. Not the greatest story ever told but it did blow my 9 year old mind at the time :)

that's because marketers have it in their head that when the hands of a watch or clock show this time, it is the closest representation to a smile. apparently, this makes you feel more positive emotion when viewing the product and more inclined to relate those emotions with the item that shows the 'smile', thus you are more receptive to buying it. it also frames the logo. the older 08:20 we used to see looked too sad, so they say.

This is because it show the brand which is normally above them.

I have a Pulsar which cost £150 (paid £75)

I did see a nice Citizen Red Arrows Ltd Ed but £600 was steep.

Breitling are nice but uber expensive

I find most watches (particularly the expensive ones) butt ugly. My last four watches have all been Jacob Jensen's, which I like for their minimalist design.

I currently have two:

The bottom looking button is actually a emergency beacon that when activated will send a air sea rescue chopper to you.

Never bothered and most of the time I'm not concerned about the time. At work it's on the computer so I can join meetings (and most importantly go home) promptly. There's one in the car. Else I usually know how long it's going to take so allow some lea way and leave "on time" by wall clock. Get there early and wait.

I still do sometimes we're when out and about, it's one the missus bought me a year ish after we met 20 odd years ago. She comments on it every so often so i know it makes her happy to see me wearing it, i won't stop because of that... even if i rarely use it to check the time lol.

Stuart 08-08-2013 19:33

Re: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?

I wear a Casio G-Shock radio controlled watch. Because it's radio controlled (ie checks the time/date automatically with the signal in cumbria) and light on electricity, I don't have to worry too much about whether it's accurate or not (indeed, I can't remember the last time I had to set it).

My iPhone does tell the time accurately, but that's assuming it's got battery power, and assuming I'm in an area safe enough to be be flashing a smartphone worth several hundred pounds in. Neither is a given if I've been out for a drink.
