TV Anywhere App

Sorry couldn't find the thread for this :( Any word on other channels being added to the line up? Seems to have stagnated :( Also when is the review that could allow Sky Sports and Movies to stream on i Pad. Very annoying laptop tends to buffer during playback, whereas I Pad is crystal clear. Want to watch Spanish football on I Pad whilst Mrs Ghost and Baby Ghost are watching Ashley piggin Banjo on the other tv's!!!

Once VM have finished testing then it will be ready.

Not sure how far they are or if they have started though.

What are they testing? The app can already stream channels, stick another stream up, prepare for network battering by sky sports, shazam.

Rebuild the app for VM and gradually introduce all features plus testing across many devices for compatibility. Android testing will be more complex than iOS. Look how long that took!

No offence to Virgin, but their Android line of apps are a bit shabby.
Wouldn't hurt to get a developer who takes a bit more care with their work.

Even if they made the apps simple and used the standard 4.0+ UI, then for older phones just use the ActionBar Sherlock (http://actionbarsherlock.com/), theme it red to match the corporate house style and bob's your uncle!

You make it sound simple. I am no programmer so would not know if it is or it isn't

Learning Java at Uni and so am now interested in how it works and love the fact that you have to use trial and error a lot, which then gives another brain wave for something else, which then breaks until you fix it etc, it makes it interesting in a weird way haha :-)

True, however the dependencies required for that app will be different that the VM one

Plus VM aren't building an app from scratch - they are having to add their customisations into code TiVo wrote

Exactly - shouldn't modifying an existing app be easier than writing an app from scratch?

As far as TV Anywhere is concerned, the vast majority of the server-side setup work (configuring CDNs etc) has been done. I'm not saying that testing on Android is easy with all the devices available, but...I just hope were still not waiting months from now.

Sorry if this is a thicko question. When your IPad is in a docking station in a vertical position, is there any way of rotating the picture when watching live tv? Picture is horizontal and can't figure how to turn it:(. not sure if I've explained that correctly.

Noticed picture rotates automatically on BBC I player when docked

I think it's configured that way (wide) when you watch tv to give the largest display area, it always switches to it even on Ipad

Ideally we need Sky to launch Sat>IP combined with planner sharing so that Virgin has to launch TiVo Stream, both of which would treat the phone/tablet as another set top box rather than streaming ~10 channels from Virgin HQ.

Re: TV Anywhere App

I had a better explanation then Chrome crapped out. :(

Anyway, Sat>IP is just a technology that converts a satellite stream into a mobile/tablet friendly video feed. So you can watch any channel you have on Sky, on any device you want, anywhere. Combine that with planner sharing (the Sky name for multiroom streaming) and you can watch every recording you've made in the same way.

So it beats Sky Go as you can watch every channel & your recordings plus as the feed is from your house and is only for you, shouldn't face overloading problems for popular events like Sky Go & TVCatchup do during the football.

AFAIK, TiVo Stream does the same thing except it first goes through a TiVo and uses a tuner (rather than a raw satellite feed) to do the same thing as Sat>IP.

---

BITW! I'm hoping to go to the TV recordings in November, hopefully they're somewhere up north.

Sat>IP was jointly developed by SES , BSKYB and Danish software company Craftworks.

Indeed, ElGato (EyeTV) already have an iOS app ready, presumably Sky & pals are currently making the hardware.

Also just realized from your link they're called the SES which is quite coincidental.

Re: TV Anywhere App

When will VM launch a version of TV Anywhere allowing offline content viewing as Sky Go Extra allows you now?

Really think TV Anywhere is a waste of time until they have this. After all I would like to use it as its title states – “TV Anywhere”. Feel Sky have already overtaken VM on flexible TV viewing as you don’t have to hunt for a WiFi connection.

Not exactly sure how much off-line content is available through Sky Go Extra but better than nothing right now with TV Anywhere, come on VM catch up!

Not quite the same but I had an example a few weeks back of the power of mobile access to TV. Was travelling back from Kings Cross to Nottingham via Grantham. While I was at Grantham station, somebody was watching the live Manchester United match on their iPad in the waiting room, he was very popular with plenty of people crowding around him to watch the match!

Sky launched Sky Go in 2011, and only now in 2013 have launched the offline stuff

Virgin launched TV Anywhere last year, so the development cycles are different

Yes, on the TV, not via the internet

The delivery method is completely different, as are the rights to do so

Also Virgin Media, to be honest, have had quite a few more important things to do before TV Anywhere.

Which Sky have also done.

What I actually meant was, combining 4 different companies, moving all cable customers onto a single billing system, creating a single TV network, replacing all TV Smartcards, switching off analogue TV, launching NGTV which then allowed more TV channels, introducing the V HD box and TiVo plus all the SD and HD channel launches that have happened in the last few years.

Download programmes if you pay £5 a month for it, on demand and anytime are the same thing but yes that would be nice to have and Sky are currently holding Sports & Movies for ransom, hopefully Liberty and their channels can become a bargaining chip.

When it's mrs, or even TiVo, Virgin get it out early and update along the way. When it's the ios, and now the android, buddy apps they tell us they want to make sure its the finished article. I don't know why anyone bothers with android devices. The OS is so fragmented over so many differently spec'd devices it will never be as good as iOS.

I just had a look around inside the iOS app, there is a whole folder dedicated to TiVo Stream related protocols and this icon is also lying about;

Good times.

Wouldn't ready too much into that - the VM app is based on the US TiVo app, so Virgin won't have removed anything they don't use, only add what they need to

Re: TV Anywhere App

Hi guys,

Is anyone having any issues with the TVA iPad app? Since the update I keep getting regular 'communication errors' and can't get into the app. My TiVo isn't networked as I use it for remote recording and live streaming so the errors must be an issue between the app and VM servers. No issue with the broadband either as can happily browse/stream from other sites.

It's a shame as when I did get into it yesterday, it did seem much more fluid and responsive than before.

My guide always takes an absolute age to load since the update though I was having connection issues before it so, :erm:

You can't blame Virginemedia because Google constantly makes changes to its operating system Android. Android is a fragmented mess of an operating system.

The problems google make Android, then the different phone manufacturers have to butcher it to make it run on crappy 50 phones an the app makers have to update their apps. The Google update it again, an half the apps stop working. Less then 10% of Android phones even run on Jellybean, most are still on gingerbread. So everyone crying for a android version probably won't be able to run it if virgin build it to run on jellybean.

Sorry, but that's nonsense:

Google has announced that its latest Jelly Bean operating system now accounts for 25% of the Android market.
There are apps I'm using released for 2.2 which work just fine for 4.2 Jelly Bean.

And let's not forget, large parts of this app already existed! And has done for several months now. By comparsion, it took the BBC around 3 months to release the Android version of the BBC Sport App after the iOS version - and that app was written from scratch.

And yet TiVo have had a US app out since January. Of last year. App developers all over the world cope with a fragmented os and differing screen sizes.

Besides which, Virgin were confident enough that they could do it that they said they'd have it out in the first part of this year. Target missed and not a hint of an update.

Sorry, but whilst I see your point, genuinely, I have to agree that it simply isn't good enough, and is made worse by the fact that Virgin only sell android handsets. The very people they're letting down are their own quad pay customers.
