Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
This seems like it could be quite upsetting for some as it seems you're not really meant to resign as Pope as it's 'for life'.

Pope resigns just before casting for the new Star Wars film begins - coincidence?
|
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
I feel a bit sorry for him to be honest. Perhaps he's right to stand down and let someone younger fulfil the role.

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
Can't shake the niggling feeling that there's more to this announcement than we are being told :erm:

It'd hardly the most objective of sources and I'm kind of thinking this would have come from other sources too if it was true but....something doesn't feel quite right about his resignation.
|
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
I think I'll wait for a reputable source to print this.
|
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
I don't think that can be true at all. There is no way it wouldn't be picked up by a mainstream source.
|
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
The only thing I found was this:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_2708518.html and it actually debunks the case. As the pope, he is head of state, and has diplomatic immunity, so he can't be prosecuted. The fact that he's resigned actually makes it possible to prosecute him, which is why he'll remain in the Vatican. The upshot is that not resigning would have been the best way to avoid arrest, and that's not what he's done. |

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
His involvement in covering for priests guilty of being paedophiles is not exactly hidden so wouldn't surprise me and his resignation certainly didn't make sense but if that is true makes a little more sense. For those saying staying put was the best thing for him maybe but for the catholic church to have a paedophile as pope certainly isn't and maybe his resignation wasn't all his choice. We will have to wait and see but personally my view of the catholic church cannot possibly go lower then it already is.
|
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
There is a great deal of difference between being prosecuted for child rape and being sued for his poor record on sexual abuse within the Catholic church.
The first site as Chris says has a very big axe to grind. The second does have a point of view that may just be possible. Will wait and see what emerges on the other better researched news sites. |
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
all he has to do is sit in the old confessional box and confess and all is forgiven ...

Not surprised, they all wanted to get off in time to watch the match...

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
If the College of Cardinals pray to God to help them make the right choice when voting for the next Pope, shouldn't the vote be unanimous?

I Googled and found out that the longest conclave was 2 years but in recent centuries it does seem to have come down to an average of 3 to 4 days. http://www.sspx.org/news/history_of_..._3-11-2013.htm |
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
|
Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
Rumours saying there will be white smoke within the next hour from the Sistine Chapel. Before conclave began, it was said in the papers that it will almost certainly be a Latin American Pope so history could be made today.

Nor me, it was just on BBC News that they think smoke is coming in the next hour. Maybe someone is communicating with outside world somehow leaking stuff.

I can't understand why people are determined to stand around waiting for news that they have decided who the next pope is. it's not as if there won't be one. all it is I suppose is the white smoke thing they're so eager to see. |

I'm ashamed to be Catholic tonight. Who the Hell would vote for someone from the most hated country in the world?
|
re: [Updated] Pope Benedict Resigns : Cardinal Bergoglio becomes Pope Francis I
Apparently he lives a relatively modest life I suppose to reflect the jesuits vow of poverty. That's not really synonymous with the fascist apparatus that's been running Argentina for the past however long and the way they treat the poor.
