Apparently over health concerns:

Last year the Pope started using a cane on occasions and recently he appeared to have trouble reading the text of an address he delivered in Rome.

I suspect you'll be a complete outsider.

A) Not Catholic
B) Atheist
C) Too young
D) Not sufficiently high enough in the hierarchy(e.g. Cardinal)

Do you speak Latin? That might count.

Extremely brave, I think, to admit he no longer feels up to the task. It has been nearly 600 years since a pope resigned, the peer pressure to stay until death must have been immense.

Doubt they'll give it to a forty year old, they didn't like the previous incumbent hanging around as long as he did imo. Anyway someone at work earlier said he wondered what he'd be addressed as from now on and came up with ex Benedict...

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns

The only thing I found was this:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_2708518.html

and it actually debunks the case. As the pope, he is head of state, and has diplomatic immunity, so he can't be prosecuted. The fact that he's resigned actually makes it possible to prosecute him, which is why he'll remain in the Vatican. The upshot is that not resigning would have been the best way to avoid arrest, and that's not what he's done.

Let's wait and see whether any reputable news outlets run the story rather than taking the word of a pressure group with an obvious axe to grind at face value. Just because they use a 'news' template to build their website, doesn't make it so ...

RizzyKing 18-02-2013 18:49

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns

His involvement in covering for priests guilty of being paedophiles is not exactly hidden so wouldn't surprise me and his resignation certainly didn't make sense but if that is true makes a little more sense. For those saying staying put was the best thing for him maybe but for the catholic church to have a paedophile as pope certainly isn't and maybe his resignation wasn't all his choice. We will have to wait and see but personally my view of the catholic church cannot possibly go lower then it already is.

Maggy 18-02-2013 19:34

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns

There is a great deal of difference between being prosecuted for child rape and being sued for his poor record on sexual abuse within the Catholic church.

The first site as Chris says has a very big axe to grind. The second does have a point of view that may just be possible.

Will wait and see what emerges on the other better researched news sites.

You'd think so, but the Catholic church has a history of in fighting, and people putting personal agendas ahead of the religion. As a Catholic, this is an interesting time for me. I will be glued to live TV coverage tomorrow awaiting news.

Personally, I want a Pope who will publicly name and condemn all those priests who sexually abused children, and ditto nuns.

I believe that the will of God doesn't overrule free will and thus the Cardinals can be influenced by personal politics, bias or misinterpretation. At least I think that is the belief if you were a Catholic (I don't really know), I am an atheist just believe they do what they think they should without divine intervention.

They still haven't arrived at a consensus.

I Googled and found out that the longest conclave was 2 years but in recent centuries it does seem to have come down to an average of 3 to 4 days.

It could be they meant smoke, as in a vote has taken place, since they'll have a rough idea when to expect votes to happen. I doubt they could know what colour the smoke will be....

The archbishop of Buenos Aires is a Jesuit intellectual who travels by bus and has a practical approach to poverty: when he was appointed a cardinal, Bergoglio persuaded hundreds of Argentinians not to fly to Rome to celebrate with him but instead to give the money they would have spent on plane tickets to the poor. He was a fierce opponent of Argentina's decision to legalise gay marriage in 2010, arguing children need to have the right to be raised and educated by a father and a mother. He was created a cardinal by John Paul II on 21 February 2001.

He's a Jesuit. Can't see how he would have any affinity with the Argentinian government.

I'm ashamed to be Catholic tonight. Who the Hell would vote for someone from the most hated country in the world?

Apparently he lives a relatively modest life I suppose to reflect the jesuits vow of poverty. That's not really synonymous with the fascist apparatus that's been running Argentina for the past however long and the way they treat the poor.
