DIR-615 too slow for 100M?
Rang up today and had my account provisioned for 100M but when I check the speeds, my DIR-615 (running DD-WRT) plus VMNG300 seems to hit a wall at around 70 to 75Mbps.
Plugging the PC into the modem direct did get a result of around 95Mbps but due to the time of day (plus utilisation problems), I did not see it again. I am guessing it is the router and so plan to buy the Asus N66U to replace the DLink but just wondered if anyone else has this DIR-615 router and can get near the 100Mbps mark? Many thanks! |
Re: DIR-615 too slow for 100M?
Nope, in the month I had 100M I only ever got about 85M max.

no buffer issues on yours then? newer builds screwed data buffering.

I did notice later that my area is supposed to get 120Mbps for end of Jan so I ordered the N66U as it is £108 on Amazon at the moment :-) Seems a good price for what you get. Plan to put this Asuswrt-Merlin f/w on it: http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=7846 Anyone have any experience of this? It claims to offer the factory f/w with some useful extras e.g. WOL, cron, etc. Thanks |
Re: DIR-615 too slow for 100M?
you are only buying time dude. Your 100mbit connecton will be upgraded to 120mbit soon enough and you need a router with gigabit ports on it

Re: DIR-615 too slow for 100M?
Yes, as Mon General says, you need to move to a new router.
The VNMG300 wiill do for 120/12 , but a better router is a requirement. Either a high end Asus or Linksys would be great. Personally I like Asus, but the General is a Linksys fan. We will agree to differ, as they say ! ;) |
Re: DIR-615 too slow for 100M?
Just ordered the Asus N66U from Amazon which seems to have very good reviews. I plan to use the RMerlin version of the Asus firmware which has some of the DD-WRT features I currently use. Anyone out there used this and if so, what are the pluses and minuses?
Some people says it runs very hot - mine will be in a cupboard so would I need extra cooling? Many thanks! |

It would need to be well ventilated in any case, you wouldn't want any kit overheating...... |

Re: DIR-615 too slow for 100M?
it was done very early on . The tutorial is on this forum it was a few years ago when VM started handing out these hand over fist. I was mean't to update this as part of the tut but I didn't as it worked and it always has pretty much
My router is a different rev or I could have just backed up my rom |

Just got the N66U today and am very impressed with it :-) Here's a speed test with the stock firmware:
