I think it is about time that Virgin put all the hd channels together. At the very least BBC One HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD and Five HD should be at the beginning such as 101, 102, 103 etc.

Problem with this is that as soon as more HD channels appear, we could end up with guide reshuffles on a regular basis, annoying everyone who knows the numbers off by heart.

A better idea would be for the box to exchange HD channels for the SD variants if the box is connected to a HD TV.

The head of ITV marketing had it as the 14th but maybe they've bumped it forward.

It could for sports fans with the XL package. When BT Sports launches in 6 months time what will happen to ESPN? If rumours and speculation are to be believed, it's goodnight ESPN. Will Virgin be able to replace ESPN with BT Sports in the XL package? Not likely. Let's hope Virgin either reduce the price of XL accordingly or re-invest the ESPN money into other content like some of the missing HD channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

I'm sure the bloke on DS has it wrong, AJ are just buying the US channel so they can make a US news channel.

RichardCoulter 03-01-2013 03:24

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

Maybe AJ were leading people on all along to get their hands on the channel- I really don't know, but Time Warner Cable have pulled the plug to stop them from broadcasting anything. It's now showing a blue screen with a "This channel is no longer available" caption.

A lot of America regard it as "Terrorist TV", so, as a result, much of Al Jazeera English was censored.

I'm shortly going to contact a friend at Dish TV to let him know, in case he hasn't heard of this secretive and rushed change of ownership. They may want to disconnect them too (assuming that they actually carry Current TV).

Jameseh 03-01-2013 04:13

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

America would obviously rather rather watch Faux News for their up-to-the-minute garbage.

Seems Current was only UK & US so I'm sure they'll sell their domain off soon for a pretty penny.

Wouldn't be bothered much if we lost ESPN. Seems to show lower league Scottish football and in the main the poorer Premiership games like Reading v Wigan :( Am still swithering about changing to Sky, if I did I wouldn't subscribe to ESPN.

In your opinion. Personally a lot of my favourite shows are on Atlantic. I have yet to see Game of Thrones, The Borgias, The Newsroom or Boardwalk Empire elsewhere. I think they also showed Bored to Death and House of Lies which I really enjoyed as well. Personally its a channel I would love to see on cable as it has many great high quality US shows.

What I'd like is for Catch Up TV not to constantly tell me that it's not available due to demand (there's a laugh in itself), my V+ box not to crash constantly, for channels to be put into a logical order so that +1's (eg) are beside the main channel and for a programme guide that is better than something done on a ZX Spectrum.

Extra channels are not my priority, but it would be nice to have The Travel Channel, though, oh and more foreign channels and for the subtitles to actually work on TV Monde.

Never a truer word spoken Den , my favourites currently airing on Atlantic are Blue Bloods and Friday night lights , my choices probably aren't too others taste but that's the beauty of multi channel pay TV. 'The Following' with Kevin Bacon also looks worth a go for me.

Anyone else not annoyed that BBC HD will become BBC2 HD?
This means that Borgen, The Killing etc will only be in SD from then.

Surely its better to have the current compromise channel.

Will the BBC also have to regionalise BBC2 HD as well?

You don't need SKY or SKY Atlantic to legally enjoy HBO content on your TV.

http://www.blinkbox.com/Search?Search=hbo

All you need is a Samsung, LG, Philips or Toshiba Smart TV. Alternatively other devices such as XBOX 360, Playstation 3 or LG Smart Blu-Ray all support the Blinkbox app.

Sure the episodes are a little costly however people, with the right equipment, can enjoy SKY Atlantic programming right now in their living room. The best American drama without subscription.

Virgin should try and get Blinkbox onto TiVo as an app, offering preferential rental rates. If virgin can’t get SKY Atlantic, surely this would be the next best thing.

I remember not being that impressed and stoped watching season one after a few episodes. But I kept seeing good reviews so gave it another go when I saw season one going cheap on Amazon. I'm glad I did, as it is a really good show. I then bought each seasons from the US as soon as they were released because, at that time, only season one was available in the UK

I love it , one of my favourites at the moment. Sky have announced they'll show all seasons which I'm happy about , wasn't it shown once on VM On Demand (seasons 1 and 2)

I stuck with the entire series because so many people told me it was the best thing ever, and Sky obviously thought it was the best way to sell Atlantic. All I can say is that I'm glad to find I'm not alone in thinking it was pretty poor.

This means that Borgen, The Killing etc will only be in SD from then.

Surely its better to have the current compromise channel.

Will the BBC also have to regionalise BBC2 HD as well?

The trouble is there are too many people who cant/wont deal with subtitles, regardless of how high the quality of programming is and I guess viewing figures are what counts when deciding what is shown in HD.

I guess you will be aware, but if you did not know The Killing has offically finished and (currently) there will no more made:mis: Lets hope we get more quality Scandinavian programs as a replacement:)

Was gonna give it a go myself, (mainly because of Sean Bean) but I found out happened at the end of the first series and decided not watch any of it. I may get round to reading the books at some point though.
Sky Atlantic (and it programs) simply do not appeal to me. As always though, I hope we get it for those who do want it though.

My friend no longer works for DirecTV (sorry, I got the name wrong), so no longer has any direct influence there.

Shareholders, however, are calling for it to be taken off the platform by putting pressure on the directors.

There are reports on the Current TV facebook page that Al Jazeera celebrated 9/11 and have broadcast footage of American troops being beheaded and marines being burnt to death.

If this is true, I think that this channel should be proscribed in this country.

It is believed that the Saudi royal family paid for Al Jazeera to go onto satellite, freeview and the channels recent additions to the Virgin Media platform.

Ultimately, no doubt, paid for by us all from their excessive oil profits.

I have asked a contact if we could see Al Jazeera coming off VM shortly.

I was told that this was doubtful, as they have paid to be there, it has not changed ownership, so VM cannot use that as a get out clause with the carriage agreement and many customers were actually asking for this channel.

And also we're not improving the situation if we allow prejudices based on the events of 11+ years ago to decide who we want our television provider to do business with. Al Jazeera has earnt much capital from the way it covered the Arab spring, and has openly courted the American government. Things change, people move on, situations improve. Most people who've actually watched the channel consider it a decent place to get news.

I for one find it very difficult to watch a subtitled film or program because I find that the text is at times not very legible or there is just to much and it has gone before I have read it all.
I therefore do not watch any subtitled programs.

It is heartwarming to know that they didn't show any beheadings.

Thinking particularly about channels going HD , I believe the BBC and Channel 5 have been very poor in their efforts in comparison to competing broadcasters. Channel 4 will have all their channels available in HD with the imminent arrival of More 4 HD , Sky has the majority of theirs in HD , Scripps have a good selection as do ITV.

If you are crediting them for the UKTV channels shouldn't the BBC also be credited for those as both are half share owners.

From what I remember all the news channels showed the beheading videos, they just paused before the actually beheading. I think they all showed the Saddam Hussein hanging video albeit with cuts and blurs as well.

Everybody seemed to hate Al Jazeera but Al Arabia show far more shocking footage at the time.

It did to me, as it's nice to know that there was some human decency applied to the situation.

You provided a link to refute the allegations made by people.

Are you trying to take over from where Carl left off, by picking needless holes in posts and/or being pedantic to a ridiculous level?

Hugh 05-01-2013 17:48

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

a) "heartwarming" in the context you used was, imho, completely inappropriate - how can it be heartwarming when someone doesn't show a beheading? (appropriate, perhaps, but heartwarming, not really...)

Re "refute the allegations" - you could have found this out for yourself, rather than repeating baseless innuendo; since you couldn't be bothered, you then tried to weasel out of it - repetition of lies is almost as bad as the initial utterance.

You say pedantic - I called it fact-based discussion; you should try it, you may like it.

WOW! Another nail in the ESPN coffin. Really surprised as ESPN only agreed a deal with NBA last month. SKY showing Basketball in 3D, that should be good.

Also BBC extended their coverage of the BDO World Championships until 2016. ESPN the pay broadcaster of the even did not.

I can see the end of ESPN (as we know it) on that date with ESPN Classic and ESPN becoming one so that ESPN can show old things like Scotland beating England in 1967 when no live Sports - if they have any left - is not being shown.

Well we shall see MB.

I think it's very plausible. All Europa League, SPL, Premiership and FA Cup commitments for this season would have been fulfilled by the 31st May. All European football commitments should also have been fulfilled with BT Vision taking over the rights. The Premiership Rugby season ends in May with BT Vision taking over the rights. The NBA finals should take place early June however it looks like SKY have the rights to this. ESPN, come the end of May, will have very little live action for June and July. ESPN America however should be fine.

I therefore do not watch any subtitled programs.

Same here, I just want to relax when I watch television, not be bothered with subtitles!

You are entitled to your opinion, but my choice of vocabulary remains unchanged. I found it heartwarming to know that even this particular channel believed that this would be a step too far.

This is an informal forum to chat about various issues, not a legal statement or an essay submission in an exam.

I stated what people had written on the Current TV facebook page, nothing more, nothing less. I made no claims that any of the allegations had been verified in any way. If I had attempted to put forward these statements as fact, you would then have had a point.

People were free to discuss/challenge any inaccuracies as they saw fit, as indeed you did regarding one of the allegations.

My accusation that you were being unnecessarily pedantic related to your fixation on the word "confirmed".

This link has some interesting information about the country that funds Al Jazeera.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/exp...t-country.html

They have money to burn and money talks, to such an extent that they can afford to buy their way onto the VM platform to show a news channel that has their own agenda/bias.

Al Jazeera claims editorial independence from the government of Qatar, but many dispute this.

I don't believe that they are gradually increasing their presence on British TV platforms with this channel for the fun of it.

Mistrust and fears of propaganda has led to many American cable customers seeing Current TV disconnected as a result of the channel being bought out by Al Jazeera.

The mistrust and fear is raised by people repeating falsehoods on forums and blogs, and these calumnies being treated as facts.

Pity these Americans don't treat Fox News or Glenn Beck the same way - I wonder why....

Richard you seem to have some issues but I'm not sure if it's with the channel, the country of origin or a mixture of both. I can't work out why you try and whip yourself and others in to a frenzy of something which most people think is nothing more than trivial. Thinking about it, it looks like you've got an issue with neither of the above but have an issue with the whole region as now you've had your Saudi reference corrected you've done some digging to try and put down the correct country. If you've got an issue, you should stop beating aroud the bush (and cross posting) and just come out and tell us what it is.

Cheers

Grim
