new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

I recently moved to 60mb from 20mb when I got a TiVo box. I know my TiVo box is plugged into my router but I am not getting even the speed I did with 20mb. Any ideas? Is it my power levels?

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

downstream power levels suck. have you got an attenuator fitted to your cable wire splitter or SH itself ?

Chuck 27-12-2012 21:31

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

three on the main line into the house, two 10dbs and a 3dbs one.

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

remove one of the 10dB forward path attenuators.

Chuck 27-12-2012 21:40

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

What should the power levels be? Any ideas why the levels have gone rubbish since I had TiVo installed?

I asked the engineer to check the levels as we have had problems in the past and he said they were ok!

-3 to +7

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

ok I will give it a go and see what happens. Will it mess up he TiVo or V+ box?

thenry 27-12-2012 21:51

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

nope. unless they have attenuators/equalizers fitted to them ?

Chuck 27-12-2012 22:16

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

removed a 10 db forward path attenuator, power is this now:

Downstream Channels Lock Status Channel ID Frequency Modulation Rx Power SNR Pre RS Errors Post RS Errors
Locked 13 307000000 Hz QAM256 -1.3 dBmV 41.9 dB 6052 5
Locked 11 291000000 Hz QAM256 -0.9 dBmV 41.7 dB 37943 585
Locked 12 299000000 Hz QAM256 -1.1 dBmV 41.9 dB 39303 410
Locked 14 315000000 Hz QAM256 -1.7 dBmV 41.5 dB 47588 23
Locked 15 323000000 Hz QAM256 -1.7 dBmV 41.9 dB 122056 19

Upstream Channels Lock Status Channel ID Frequency Modulation Tx Power Mode Channel Bandwidth Symbol Rate
Locked 41 35800000 Hz ATDMA 44.8 dBmV 16QAM 6400000 20480 Kbits/sec

but still can't get above 10mb on speedtest!

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

did you reboot the SH ?

Chuck 27-12-2012 22:32

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

I have now but no real change, power levels look better in the down but i sthe SNR too high? Speeds are still rubbish!

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

www.speedtester.bt.com

SNRs good. you are testing via wired ethernet right?

set up a ping monitor, it may be network utilization, high usage.

you could try this > www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe < move the marker up top all the way too 100+ then above apply changes at the bottom click on optimal then tick the modify all network adapters box then apply changes > restart > open IE and test speedtest.net

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

I am using a wired connection as this will be more reliable.

It is better after the attenuator removal, getting aroun 30mbps now, but that is half what it should be. Maybe I need someone to come out, I had to before because the signals were all over the shop!

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

copy and paste your Operation Configuration.

192.168.100.1 > Router Status > Operation Configuration

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

Sorry to sound thick but where do I find that?

Thanks for your help it is appreciated!

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

put this in your web browser

192.168.100.1

now top right click on Router Status

then Operation Configuration

copy and paste

well your set for 60meg down and 3meg up.

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

Oddly that is what I am getting now, latest speed test shows just over 60mb, really odd.

Could it have taken a while for the power change to take effect?

I don't think I could have been throttled because I haven't downloaded anything unless TiVo box did it!

thenry 27-12-2012 23:21

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

dont know. it should of settled right after the reboot.

Chuck 27-12-2012 23:23

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

bizzare, last test went through at 68mb!!! Mental, well maybe it will settle somewhere near 60mb, will just have to keep an eye onit, but it is miles better than it was so thanks for your help it was really useful, at least the power levels are better.

TH had it right.

-12 dBmv is too low for the modem to receive data reliably. Once that was fixed, you were going to get whatever capacity is available in your network segment.

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

if the speedtest is jumping all over the place do the TCP optimizer and then test in Internet Explorer

BTW, the best speed test to use is Jack Dinn's JDAST. It is multi-threaded and runs from your PC not over the web via a ropey Java app.

Re: new 60mb slower than old 20mb!

I also posted on the virgin forum and got this answer:

After having a look at the part of the network you are connected to there is an issue with utilisation. This has been raised to the Outage team and we have a fault reference for the issue of F002291908.

So it looks like it is a utilisation issue but I am sure my power levels have helped improve so thanks.
