Virgin Media screens may go dark at Christmas due to industrial action.

papa smurf has posted this rather worrying post in another thread:

"any way re union involvement i would be more worried about the 30 bectu members

Virgin Media anti-union move hits BECTU members
26 November 2012

Roughly 30 members of BECTU working for Virgin Media have been caught up in union de-recognition bid.

those mere 30 bectu members work in broadcasting and its nearly xmas ,and bectu are a lot more militant than the cwu ,make sure the freeview is tuned in".

I took this to mean that VM TV screens may go dark at Christmas due to industrial action by some VM staff.

If my TV goes off due to industrial action I will simply use another TV supplier, what will others do?

Does anyone know if this threat is a reality?

Does anyone know what this dispute is all about, if it happens l will simply switch to Sky.

This is what unions are all about, they will pick the best time of year to strike ie Airports pick Summer or Xmas, Undergrounds pick the busiest times of the year.

And then we have VM pick Xmas. Lets see all the Directors of VM trembling in there boots over this.

I suppose I would worry about it if I thought it would / could ever happen. I guess I can't take the OP seriously enough to give it serious consideration.

Even if it DID happen I just wouldn't watch TV - I 've got plenty of other things to do.

Why would you worry about it if you have plenty of other things to do?

You have no reason to not take this seriously simply because I posted it, as you so rudely stated. In addition, the revelation of the possibility of industrial action was not made by me.

The first two paragraphs in this post are all I need to know with regards yourself and facts.

But and this is important I'm in no way saying you shouldn't comment.

OMG i have never seen so much rubbish posted in my life, this thread was started for one reason and one reason only, So that a certain poster can continue his attacks of VM staff members because the last thread he used for this purpose was shut down. There is no truth in anything that is being posted in relation to any form of industrial action.

To be honest i think that a Richard C is attempting to get a member of staff in trouble by starting this thread and i feel he's totally out of order.

Thanks for letting me know why you have formed this opinion.

Whilst I agree that it is sensible to take things on the internet with a pinch of salt unless evidence is provided, some peoples need for constant affirmation
for irrelevancies is unreasonable.

For example, if I posted "Sky Atlantic" starts on VM tomorrow, it would be reasonable for someone to want proof.

If I said "it's currently raining here", I would expect people to simply accept it, without the need for dated photographs etc.

In that particular thread that you linked to, I was stupidly asked to provide proof of an opinion that I had formed over the years of my life experiences.

I see that your desire to stir things up by spreading misinformation has not diminished.

Allow me to clarify things for the benefit of others:

- I have never attacked someone, nor would I, simply because they happen to work for VM. What an absurdly preposterous thing to say!

- I have never used any thread for the purpose of attacking VM staff. I think that Sirius is confusing this with holding an alternative viewpoint.

- I have no record of any thread being closed for the reason that Sirius describes.

- If Sirius has any evidence that there will not be industrial action, i'm sure myself and other customers would welcome evidence of this. It is not clear where he would obtain this information from, as he is not even a member of BECTU

- Why and how on earth could papa smurf get into trouble for his post, this does not make any sense at all. In any case, i'm sure that he is more than able to look out for himself, without the need for your intervention.

- The purpose of this thread is to try and ascertain if VM TV customers will be impacted at Christmas by any form of industrial action by BECTU members.

Bearing the above paragraph in mind, does anyone have any concrete evidence of what VM customers can expect at Christmas?

So he has started a thread where he has inferred that there is going to be a strike at Virgin Media at Christmas hoping he can create fear of losing TV over the Christmas period.

Richard has no evidence that there is going to be a strike and that is because NOONE has stated that there is going to be a strike other than Richard C.

You are confusing yourself between two posts made to Sirius and papa smurf.

I believe that papa smurf was inferring that there may be industrial action. As at this point in time, he has not stated anything to the contrary.

The request for proof, to put peoples' minds at rest, was made to Sirius as he has categorically stated that there will be no industrial action.

As previously explained, there have been no "attacks" on VM staff, other than in your imagination.

Thanks for the link, but this has still not reassured me as a customer that industrial action will not take place. Have the facts in this post made you change your mind on your earlier beliefs? If they have, this will go a long way to reassure myself and others :)

IF Virgin Media staff are going on strike for a reason or grievance against the company, then l fully support them.

However, IF this strike is over something trivial, then talks need to start immediately otherwise problems will start to hit customers.

BUT NO ONE HAS SAID WHAT THE STRIKE IS ABOUT.

This is my understanding of the situation, which is drawn from various sources. Other viewpoints are available :D

The CWU and some of their members have upset Virgin Media to the point where VM have de-recognised them. There have also been allegations of financial impropriety with members' subscription payments.

Unfortunately, BECTU have been caught up in this as it is not viable to negotiate with such a tiny part of the workforce.

Naturally, BECTU are not happy the situation and there was a post made by a member of staff that suggested to me that screens may go dark over Christmas. This was because BECTU were alleged to be more militant than the CWU and it was inferred that their members were key personnel in the provision of the VM TV service.

There has been a suggestion that the post was tongue in cheek and another member of staff has repeatedly stated that there will not be a strike.

The person who made the post that started the speculation has thus far not confirmed that his post was tongue in cheek, nor confirmed whether my interpretation of his post was correct or not.

The state of play at the moment is that no-one knows for sure if there will be a strike or not, let's hope not ;)

And on that note - closed.

The Cable Forum Team have frankly had enough of the current bickering and excessive nit picking between certain members. If people cannot discuss matters without baiting each other then they will not be on this site much longer.

Remember that we normally do not allow new threads to be opened to circumvent threads that have been closed. This was marginal.
