Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

Ive been on 10mb for a few years now and never had any trouble, but a couple of weeks ago i was givena free upgrade to 20mb and thats where my problems started.

I mostly use my internet with PS3 and before i could watch iplayer etc no probs but now i get constant buffering and it will rarely work also the PS3 speedtest was always right before showing 10mb or 2.5mb if traffic management had kicked in.
Now i see speeds all over the place ranging from 1mb to 18mb, the PS3 speedtest seems to be telling the truth because when its low iplayer etc wont work and when its high iplayer works fine.

So it seems my internet is no longer stable i am still using the same hub that i had before but i notice thast im now on docsis 2 and im sure i was on docsis 1 before.

So could it be that docsis 2 has too many users in my area and thats slowing me down?

Also does docsis 1 only support up to 10mb?

If it does i would rather go back to docsis 1 and 10mb than put up with this, will virgin downgrade me again?

Thanks for any help.

you said you're having trouble with buffering.

See this thread: http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...3/td-p/1582824

This is part 3 as the other threads became too long. There are links to the other 2 threads in the first post.

I recon tiny T is on an ambit 255/256 modem.

I'm not sure but I think anything up to 20Mbps is on the DOCSIS 1.1 network? I didn't think VM used DOCSIS 2.

The 256 modem can handle 20 Mbit.

My speed has been doubled to 20Mbit, I have the 256 modem and I get 20 Mbit solid.

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

20mbit is on docsis 2 and the ambit 256 can handle 20mbit no probs. What will be interesting is if the op hasnt got an ambit 256 and is using an older modem which is only good for 10mbit such as the terayon tj210.

Anyways, the chances are that there were too many users on 10mbit which have now been banged up to 20mbit and there isnt enough juice to go around.

There were talks many years ago about moving 20mbit users onto docsis 3 so I don't know if you can ring up to get a shub and if you use that you'll be on 20mbit on docsis 3.

Before I upgraded to XXL, I started out on the 20 meg service (just round the corner from Ken btw). Had the Ambit 256 and always got 20 meg.

Downstream was DOCSIS 1.1; upstream was DOCSIS 1.0. It tells you on the upstream stats "Channel Type".

Hi Ken

Your upstream is on DOCSIS 2. This is ascertained from your upstream symbol rate (5120K), which is the rate at which the 6.4MHz channel operates and is only supported on DOCSIS 2.

BTW, is your upstream power steady at 47 dBmv? Or does it rise/fluctuate? I've noticed that your upstream modulation is QPSK, which means there's noise on your upstream which isn't good.

you can do one of 2 things dude. You can/should ring tech support to get someone out to fix it or if you dont want the ball ache of calling India, you can buy yourself one of these

thenry 04-12-2012 20:24

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

ok sorry. no harm in trying this. OP do a pinhole reset on the Hub. it may be glitched. follow these instructions...

http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...ICLE_ID=322888

Sephiroth 04-12-2012 20:37

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

Again, TH - putting people to the trouble of a pinhole reset on the offchance it might work is not good advice. All the router settings so painfully (sometimes) established are lost and this is a humble single channel modem and there's really no need.

Sorry, TH.

The first thing that TinyT needs is a forward path attenuator as advised by mon General.

thenry 04-12-2012 20:49

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

id rather try things to solve a problem while waiting for a tech than do nothing worrying about any settings i had set to the hub. again no harm in trying. its not like the Hub will stop working.

Over the last day the Upstream power 46.6 dbv to 47.2 dbv so I thing that is stable. The speed using The Cable Forum checker is 19.5 Mb to 20.2 Mb which is very good.

Sephiroth 05-12-2012 10:16

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

Ken - the point I wished to make is that your upstream is working at half speed because you're on QPSK modulation (2 bits/symbol rather than 4 on QAM16). If that doesn't matter to you, fine. I couldn't live with it because of what I need the internet for.

Cheers

Qtx 05-12-2012 10:19

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

If memory serves it switches to QPSK from QAM usually when there is an issue on the line.

Sephiroth 05-12-2012 10:22

Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!

Yeah - Noise. 2 bits/symbol allows for more potholes than 4 bits/symbol.

I think it is fine for me.

I think it is a case of if it is not broken don't fix it.

someone posted a youtube vid on that link that they said kept buffering, on my infintiy it loaded in under 2 secs fully to end.

whatever is the issue with VM I suspect its far from minor, either severe under capacity which the numerous capacity upgrades they said they have done in the past 2 weeks still not adressing or is some other issues as well with how VM's network is configured, maybe traffic management systems or something as well. On my VM it just doesnt feel right, on BT it loads as fast as it can, on VM it seems like its been throttled back.

As what TH says, but yes - whatever might be the problem, even oversubscription in your networkj segment, your chances are best with modem mode, though you do have to lay out dosh for a decent router.
