Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

could someone please help me out. i have a v hd box which sonetimes doesnt turn on when powered on by the socket (mains) the red standby or off light on the box stays red even when pressing power on the remote to power up. i then have to pull the pull and then put it back in then power up for it to turn on (a few times sometimes).

ive also now noticed including today that the card doesnt want to work. a message appears saying the cards expired. a few reboots and its back on.

i done a medic check and RF levels come up as fail.

RF Levels - Equalise - Failed
RF Qaulity - No Action Required - Passed

RF Tests - low ok - medium high - high high
SNR Tests - low ok - medium ok - high ok
SNR Values - low 35 - medium 35 - high 36
Pre RS Error tests - low ok - medium ok - high ok
Pre RS Values - low 1 - medium 0 - high 0
Post RS Error Tests - low ok - medium ok - high ok
Post RS Values - low 0 - medium 0 - high 0

upstream power level 45

MCNS passed all ok

PROV passed all ok.

i have an 8dB FP eqauliser before the splitter.

SH downstream power levels are between + 4-7. SNR is between 41-43. Upstreams power level is 44.

ive already had the box swapped. i was offered a TiVo but 50odd quid in install fees is a no thank you!

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

The simple solution to both problems is to leave the box on or in standby. The card can expire if you turn the box off too much.

Your signals are fine.

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

have done in the past but then the box doesnt boot up when pressing power so i just turn it off and on. same problems either way tbh so now instead of wasting electric i just pull the plug and plug in when i need it... or try anyway.

Ah, I see. Is it properly ventilated?

yup

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

Give 'em a call then. If they swap the box, make sure they swap the power supply too.

the medic is over sensitive on the vhd, a 10db attenuator instead of the equiliser will sort the medic out.

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

the tech took my 10dB attenuator off and replaced it for the 8dB equaliser last time out :fit:

an equiliser doesnt attenuate high frequences hence the high frequency being high

infact it was the one i got off you! i just called support again and the bookings been moved forward for tomorrow.

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

vhds do this, im not sure if its worth the effort of getting it swapped again. usually if you plug it in the red light comes on then a few seconds later the blue comes on. then again it has nonrecordings so one more swap cant hurt

That's why every time I get them out now lol any equipment that has cost me money or I've had to put in to fix my own services I remove it prior to the visit.

I struggled to get VM to fit a HDU, in the end I fitted my own and signal levels have been perfect ever since.

Don't wanna loose that to an engineer.

No, don't mess with it. There is nothing wrong with your signals.

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

I've probably just met the best tech I've come across, top bloke. Is there any way I can send in feedback on the tech?

I told him the problem and 'mentioned' the 10dB FP attenuator swap. confirmed and the 10dB FP attenuator went on and he ran tests on the V HD but there was loss yet signals were better. Problem was is the SH stopped working with the 10dB FP attenuator fitted between the isolator and splitter so he replaced the isolator, the splitter and fitted new cables and now the SHs back, V HD box is functioning as it should be and I'm happy :D

Glad you got it sorted. :)

I had isolators replaced a few times during my time with VM. It always seemed to resolve those really weird issues.

the box itself is still playing up. on boot from plug socket the red light stays and the box doesn't want to turn on until i unplug then plug back in again?

That's because the tech only messed about with the signals which were fine to start with. Your box or its power supply are faulty.

If you are referring to isolators, I was told a nearby lightning strike can screw them up.

I did need the 10dB FP attenuator on in place of the equaliser though. Plus that singled out the splitter which needed to be replaced.

if thats true then can an electrical fault mess them up? I still get static like shocks hitting the isolator. The tech couldn't understand why that was happening. The cabs and local has been checked by senior VM network guys already. British Gas say my electrics are fine.

The idea is to isolate your home from external electrical events, so yes an external electrical fault can leave an isolator messed up after it has done it's job. It seems dampness can also mess them up too.

I'm really not able to comment :(

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

what are the odds!! as I mention the electrical fault my local electric hub thing outside is being worked on by workmen. Theres a digger out there digging up earth around the hub.

---------- Post added at 15:38 ---------- Previous post was at 15:26 ----------

and now a call from a certain energy provider telling me theres workmen outside nearby working on site with regards to this problem.

I told the local council about this years ago, they done nothing!

RB2004 28-11-2012 15:11

Wouldn't have anything to do with your previous complaint of a clicking isolator would it?

yeah.

i didnt think an iso could click

thenry 28-11-2012 16:01

Re: Box Fail, Card Fail and RF Levels Fail

it sounds like a static shock. the sound level varies from extremely loud to a low toned click noise. are there any electricians on here?
