Tried to use DD-WRT on my WRT610N =(bricked)

Hay up Ladies and gents :), just after some help please as I think I've now bricked my router.

After a little gentle persuasion I tried to flash my Linksys WRT610N (v1) router with DD-WRT firmware in the hopes of being able to eventually use it to replace my crappy Sagemcom fibre router unit supplied by Sky.

I have never attempted to do this before so I may have made some assumptions about how to achieve this so please bear with me.

So far I've connected to my Linksys via my laptop, downloaded what I believe to be the correct version of DD-WRT and saved it in my downloads, I then opened up the Linksys GUI and hit the upgrade firmware, selected the recently downloaded firmware from my downloads and clicked the go for it button.

I don't really know if this is the correct way of doing things but afterwards I couldnt and still can't log into the linksys via 192.168.1.1

So I thought I'd try a factory restore reboot, so held the little button in on the back for about 30 seconds = didnt work :(

I then tried a 30/30/30 reset = didnt work either :(

I'm now at a bit of a loss as to how to at least get the router back to a condition where I can use it or log into it.

The router just seems to be switching on ok, and when I connect an ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports, it lights up as if I'm connected but I just can't log in.

The version of DD-WRT I used is below, it's the standard generic version if that makes any sence
http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/do...neric.bin/3729

I'm now stuck in limbo land not knowing what to try next, I'm even contemplating trying this below but it seems a bit drastic and I'll probably cock that up too.

Your help as usual is appreciated

Because i was arranging to fix it for him at my house as he lives not far from me and i had no intention of giving out my address to everyone so they could come watch . i have the kit to unbrick a router. !

I hate to spoil your plans... but from what I hear, you HAVE to use Sky's fibre router. Sky's network uses a weird 802.1q tagging method to authorise users/modems, rather than PPPoE like all the other ISPs. I was told this by one of the core networking guys at Sky, so, it's pretty authoritative .

It can be done with DDWRT ;)

I can kind of get it running, if I reboot everything and then log into the router, it will sometimes let me in.

Once in it asks me to change the username and password, then it may or may not let me into the dd-wrt gui, I thought I'd cracked it but it doesnt retain any of the info I put in.

If I reboot again and manage to get in again, it's back at the beginning again, so I take it its only partially bricked for now at least

You can drop it off after 4.00pm tomorrow if that helps. It should be ready for Saturday then.

Then it's not really bricked. Can you ping it, and what sort of packet loss do you get? What build did you use?

Apparently that model is one of the easiest to fix, assuming you have the "management mode" thing. Just like the DIR-615, it's virtually impossible to brick

Hay up qas, Ive put it all away now, when I was lucky enough to get into the gui, everything seemed fine, I could access all the settings etc, but after a few minutes it would just lock up, stop responding and then I couldnt log in anymore untill numerous reboots later, and only then after I had taken the ethernet cable out of the LAN port for a few seconds and stuck it in the WAN port then back again,,,,,,,

In terms of build if you look at my initial post it's shows which build I used (I should have took a screenshot of when it was working).

I never thought of pinging it, the thought never crossed my mind

Yeah your first post says what file you downloaded, it doesn't tell me what build number is in that file.

There's a good reason I dislike both DD-WRT and Broadcom devices...

Hi Qas, Ive now got a working router thanks to Sirius :),

I dont always undertsand the technical jargon so you will have to bear with me, (how do I tell what build I'm using ?)

So far I've managed to extract my Sky username and password from the Sagemcom router, input the line of code into the Linksys telling it the username and password but as yet it wont connect to the net.

Craigj2K12 sent me the destructions on how to do this last night, (big thanks by the way) in a very easy to follow way, which I followed to the letter but no no joy.

I can connect to the router now wirelessly/wired no probs but just no internet activity, I will post the instuctions I followed once craig gives me the OK to do so, for those in the know to look over and hopefully point me in the right direction.

In terms of build, I'm now not sure which one Sirius put on it last night but if you know how I can check this out, by all means let me know and I will get back with the releavant info.

Now Ive come this far I want to see it through to the bitter end and ditch this sagemcom door stop

if you ever think of updating it check the ddwrt forum for other people who've done it first.
brainslayer seems unable to fix stuff without breaking other parts.

Ah OK.

That's quite old but should be moderately stable. Not tried it on Broadcom though, I only use DD-WRT on the DIR-615 these days, so it might be less than stable on yours...

AFAIK that build came out well before anyone understood MER and probably doesn't support the required protocol (unless you've custom-modded it...) to work on Sky.

For reference it should be in the title bar when you open any page on the web interface, or for those stupid browsers without a title bar, if you click the absolute top right where it says e.g. "Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/13/11) std" you'll get the same info.

Re: Tried to use DD-WRT on my WRT610N =(bricked)

Hi Guys and Gals, I have been trying via PM to craigj to get my router (WRT610N) working with DD-WRT on my Sky Fibre broadband. Craig even posted it on another site asking for help but to no avail.

I'm now out of my depth and asking for help in getting it working (if it's possible)

Below are the steps I took in order to try and get it working

Quote:

1) You want to find your username and password, you do this by visiting this website
http://www.ph-mb.com/products/sky-calc
Select the Sagem F@ST router
Then input the info from your sagemcom router (its LAN MAC address and default wireless password)

Keep this page open while you go to step 2...

2) Find which interface DDWRT has assigned to your routers WAN port, this can be found on the networking page (under Setup -> Networking)

The information you are looking for is "WAN Port Assignment", this is under the section "Port Setup" - you want to take note of which interface is in the drop down box (my case it is "vlan2")

3) Go to DDWRT's commands page (Under administration -> commands) then copy the following code, replacing necessary parts:

Code:
killall udhcpc

/usr/sbin/udhcpc -i vlan2 -V "6.14.1aN_UNI|PCBAFAST2504Nv1.0" -c "UUUUUUUUUU@skydsl|PPPPPPPPPPPPPP" -p /var/run/udhcpc.pid -s /tmp/udhcpc &
vlan2 - change this to match the information found in step 2

UUUUUUUUUU@skydsl - change this to match the PPP Username found in step 1

PPPPPPPPPPPPPP - change this to match the PPP Password found in step 1

4) Click the "Save Startup" button

5) Power cycle both modem and router and all should be working
Ive double no tripple checked Ive done everything correctly but the router just refuses to play ball.

After a while and a reply off qas, it was realised I'd used the wrong DD-WRT build so this one was used

Quote:

Looking at the DDWRT wiki for the WRT610N, you want an eko 'big' build - this one should do the trick:

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_TNG/...ig-wrt610n.bin
But it still won't connect to the internet.

craig then asked me to check something by running

Quote:

Then if you could run the command "ps" in the command shell (shows what services are currently running)
Below is what was obtained from that (means nothing to me).

Quote:

Ok I did what you asked and tried to run the code in the command shell, and the router page just hangs and requires a reboot to get it back to a usable condition, I ran the ps in the command shell and have copied and pasted below.

Enjoy

PID USER VSZ STAT COMMAND
1 root 1688 S /sbin/init noinitrd
2 root 0 SW [keventd]
3 root 0 SWN [ksoftirqd_CPU0]
4 root 0 SW [kswapd]

350 root 1444 S {.rc_startup} /bin/sh /tmp/.rc_startup

662 root 1448 R sh -c alias ping='ping -c 3'; eval "ps" > /tmp/ping.
663 root 1448 R ps

Which according to craigj then narrowed it down to the udhpc service causing the router to crash, again it all goes over my head but we just can't get beyond this.

I appreciate this is a long shot but could the more technical peeps amongst us cast their eyes over this and see if they can spot anything.

Bear in mind I haven't actually got round to doing this, however I have researched it.

I am wondering if you have got this section correct:

"Code:
killall udhcpc

/usr/sbin/udhcpc -i vlan2 -V "6.14.1aN_UNI|PCBAFAST2504Nv1.0" -c "UUUUUUUUUU@skydsl|PPPPPPPPPPPPPP" -p /var/run/udhcpc.pid -s /tmp/udhcpc &
vlan2 - change this to match the information found in step 2"

The ampersand signifies that the line of code is not complete and continues on the next line. Is this symble in the right position? Try it with and without any spaces.

Do you need the empty line between killall udhcpc and /usr/sbin.........
Try it without

Interesting Mick, I like your thinking, well it's easy enough to try it, so I will have a dabble after tea and report back.

I don't know if the space between killall udhcpc and /usr/sbin......... is required so I will just try removing it.

Re the (&) : I have tried with it removed completely, but not without removing just the spaces, so I will also give it a whirl.

Much obliged sir :)

That's incorrect.

A backslash is used to continue a command over multiple lines. An ampersand signals to the shell to not wait for the application to return before continuing.

I'm not sure if anything can be gleaned from this

Unless your PS output is getting cut off, what the system thinks it's running and what you told it to run are entirely different. Stretch the window and run PS again to see if the udhcpc is being cut short.

Best way to debug is to connect to the router using telnet or SSH and run that command manually to see what the output is. I'm not sure how DD-WRT handles its' syslog or whether it has one at all, on Openwrt it's easy enough to see what's going wrong as the system log will contain any errors output by the startup script or your udhcpc command.

That's incorrect.

A backslash is used to continue a command over multiple lines. An ampersand signals to the shell to not wait for the application to return before continuing.

Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks qas for the heads up and Mick for the PM, I will have a try again over the weekend once Mrs Pabs is content with the Christmas prep stuff.

I really apprecaite the help gents, even though most of it goes over my head :)

Did you get this sorted in the end?

Re: Tried to use DD-WRT on my WRT610N =(bricked)

In a word no, I had a quick look over Christmas but couldnt get my head into gear as both me and Mrs Pabs got man flu and what seemed like every lurgy under the sun, all good now though :)

I have been meaning to get back in that mindset and have another bash for the last week or two but havent been able to motivate my arse.

I will have a play I think tonight (seen as youve asked) and if I cant get the darn thing to play ball, its getting shot in my garden whether it likes it or not, after shooting it I will probably burn it, then crush it in my vice, then grind it to dust and bury it. :D:D

Quick update, I took craig up on his offer after I gave up trying to get DDwrt to work (with his help) and sent him my WRT610N to play with, after a fair bit of fettling he's got openwrt to work on it and the router is now hooked up and working a treat so far.

The first thing the wife noticed was that her FB games run quicker and she said her lappy seems more responsive , I must confess my little netbook snaps web pages up a tad quicker too.

Her new kindle fire HD works a treat anywhere in the house, so all in all a pukka job and a big thanks to craigj2k12 for sorting it out and not giving up :).

My only issue with the openwrt firmware is I don't see how I can enable upnp in the gui or find a dmz to open the NAT on both the games consoles

any tips or advice peeps

:erm: In view of the latest revelations of security holes I don't think you really want to activate upnp.

Sorry I never used openwrt but I bet the dmz option you are looking for is there somewhere. Have you checked the options in the firewall section.

Glad to hear you got your router sorted in the end. :)

I hear what your saying Mick about upnp it was just an easier option I was looking at, the DMZ option simply isnt there like it is on a normal entry level GUI.

Ive looked in the firewall section but it's not there, Ive not spent loads of time mooching in it's GUI but I'm going to give it some welly tonight and have a bit of a play.

A big thanks for everyones help by the way, yourself included ;), its taken a while to get it working but hopefully now were on easy street.

OpenWrt Wiki » Documentation » HOWTOs » Setting up a DMZ

Have you installed it?

Like everything else on Openwrt UPNP is a modular feature. You have to install it first.

System => Software => luci-app-upnp or opkg install luci-app-upnp

In a word no :dunce:, I find it all a bit daunting and most of it goes over my head. Openwrt looks far too advanced for your average Jo

Took me 3 years to get to grips with it too :)

As I was saying to someone else thinking of switching, it does have a steeper learning curve but once you figure it out it is a lot more powerful. Same as Windows vs. Linux really.

If you want upnp you'll have to install it and the GUI gives you an easy enough way of doing that...

I can certainly appreciate the benefits of using Openwrt, assuming you understand it of course, I just need to research it more before making any ammendments, I was playing last night trying to set up port forwarding but everytime I saved and applied the changes the wireless signal dropped out :erm:, so I had to cancel.

Wireless reception has stopped working a few times yesterday and today, not sure whats caused it but at the end of the day my WRT610N is running on a *******ised firmware meant for a WRT54G so I guess its gonna be a bit buggy :)

Not sure why, I will have to ask craig that, the only reason I said that was because it says so in the router status page, copied for clarification. Maybe thats the only version available that works on my router
