Elite: Dangerous

Looks like a possible remake of the old, old, old favourite Elite (from the BBC B Micro fame) might make a return

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20165344

I know that will make Dilli happy :D

"Elite is a game that I've wanted to come back to for a very, very long time," Mr Braben told the BBC. "It's the sort of game that I would very much like to play today."
In which case, download a copy of Oolite and stop killing tribute acts like Elite: The New Kind.

Braben has been talking about re-making Elite for years now. And now he's talking about re-making it but only if a load of people give him the money first. Somehow I don't think this is going to happen. For those that want a modern spacefaring game there are plenty to choose from and for those that still want to haul computers between Zaonce and Lave, Oolite has everything original Elite had, plus a heck of a lot more thanks to its customisable design and extensive support community.

dilli-theclaw 06-11-2012 09:16

re: Elite: Dangerous

Oh yes I do like my elite :)

I have oolite and TNK as well, but I tend to play it on an original BBC micro, although of course I have a BBC emulator on my nexus 7 ;)

I'd definitely give a new version a go, but as Chris says it's been ongoing for ages so I can't see it happening.

Kymmy 06-11-2012 09:24

re: Elite: Dangerous

Problem with oolite and E:TNK is that they are just clones with updated graphics (or not in the case of TNK)

What's being put forward here is a new game based on the original concept but in it's own right a totally new game..

Chris 06-11-2012 09:37

re: Elite: Dangerous

Which sort of begs the question, why bother? There are a lot of space fighting/trading games out there now. If Braben is using the Elite brand name to disguise an attempt to make just another space sim, it's no wonder he can't get financial backing from the usual sources.

Elite's enduring reputation is due to the originality and playability of the original. It's far from clear that Braben can - or even intends to - produce another genre-defining piece of work with Elite: Dangerous. Possibly the title is an indication in itself, "Dangerous" being two ranks below "Elite" in the original scheme. :D

I'd like to see both Elite and the XWing games properly remade. I'd also like to see Descent 4 released, as well as a sequel to the Descent: Freespace games, which were pretty good games and had good effects (for the time).

I liked elite and managed to get to Archangel by destroying a space station.

Then I got a bit bored and found a cheat with lots of money. Eventually I made a Tardis like ship, small on outside with huge hold. This way I could load up with goods and fuel and then travel huge distances.

SnoopZ 12-11-2012 13:00

re: Elite: Dangerous

I never see the point of cheating, it ruins games in my opinion.

Elite was awesome i played that for years on my Acorn Electron.

tweetiepooh 12-11-2012 14:24

re: Elite: Dangerous

Cheating doesn't help I agree. I just got bored at that point so into the what else is out there type of thinking.

Once you have the gadgets to dock and so forth then things can get a little tedious. You've done missions, you've got the trading worked out, you're armed to the teeth.
My only cheat was to add a huge amount of credit. Other stuff I worked out by myself.

A bit like once you've finished some games you may want to "cheat" whether by software or crib sheets to see if there is anything else to find.

Stuart 12-11-2012 14:37

re: Elite: Dangerous

Cheating can be therapeutic in some instances. I used to find it very relaxing when I had a hard day at work, and something wound me up. I'd just fire up a Grand Theft Auto game, activate one of their "get all weapons" cheats, then just go round the virtual town or city and blow as much up as I could.

Didn't use it to help with my actual game play though.

If you're waiting for your Elite fix, how about:

truer to the original than the mess Frontier made of the sequels.

I never went for the Kickstarter, BECAUSE of the Frontier name attached to it... wouldn't trust them with an orbital shuttle, never mind a Cobra MK III

Jeez just checked, £100 for the beta version. No game is worth half of that even when completed.

I already had the beta one which is £50 Natalie upgraded it to the premium one. Mind you if I had the spare cash I'd have got the alpha as well which was £200.

I think it's worth every penny.

I'm all for supporting people that need it, but there is a limit and £100-200 is way beyond the norm for a game. For that price I'd expect shares.

Each to their own and all that, I'm glad you feel it is worth it, but beta testers used to be paid, not to pay (that amount) for the privilege.

Elite was unique for its time which is why it did well, and it'll be novelty to play a rebooted version of it again, but not sure it'll have the same appeal today though (I hope I'm very wrong). But I do hope it does well.

From the latest newsletter

"Serge: Can you talk about the expectations of the Mac version?
We have said that the Mac version will follow around 3 months after the PC version. Currently we have been focusing on building the fundamentals of Elite: Dangerous on PC. Now we have got to Premium Beta we have enough of the game present that it makes sense for us to start focusing on Mac specific porting and optimization tasks using our cross-platform Cobra game engine software. We have been laying the groundwork for the Mac version in the background for a while now, and have just started to ramp up the activity. We’ll keep you posted as we have progress to share! "

Cheers :tu: :)

I have toyed with the idea of getting the Premium Beta, but that would also mean having to buy Windows and use Bootcamp or Parallels, which is a bit excessive just to play a game early. It's the only thing I'd use Windows for, so I'm happy to wait for the Mac version.

Re: Elite: Dangerous

Is there a playable demo of this Dilli?

MovedGoalPosts 16-11-2014 12:06

Re: Elite: Dangerous

There is no demo, and I haven't seen any plans for one.

The only way to play at the moment is to purchase the game, paying an additional amount for beta access. But beta ends next week, with the game going to "gamma" i.e. pre-release, before full launch on the 16th Dec.

Prior to launch you can buy the "mercenary edition" for £35, which gives some added content at a discount of £4.99 on the normal game price, but only play after the 16th. Pay an extra £15 for the beta to play now, but you can't do that after next week, this offers a few long term game benefits such as extra ship, free access to some of the solar systems especially Sol (our system).

The game is only available on the elite dangerous sites, and needs an online connection to work. It's also getting tweaked so fast as they catch bugs (hence this being a genuine beta) that I doubt anyone could create a demo anyway. The best guides you get as to what the game is about are the numerous player videos.
