[update] Super-storm Sandy devastates US East Coast

Quote:

U.S. NEWS - East Coast Prepares for Storm's Arrival

Hurricane Sandy, a menacing monster of a storm that forecasters said would bring "life-threatening" flooding, churned toward some of the nation's most densely populated areas on Sunday, prompting widespread evacuations and the shutdown of New York City's transit system.

Officials warned that the hurricane, creeping north from the Caribbean, where it killed more than 60 people, could disrupt life in the Northeast for days. New York went into emergency mode, ordering more than 370,000 people evacuated in low-lying communities from Coney Island in Brooklyn to Battery Park City in Manhattan and giving 1.1 million schoolchildren a day off on Monday.

Be interesting to see how it affects the election. It's emerged Romney wanted to close FEMA and give the money to the states and Obama has a chance to look like a President but if it causes a lot of damage then who knows.

I wouldn't want to be a weather man over there if this does turn out to be a non event because according to the NY taxi driver on sky news this morning they will get tarred and feathered unless it's at least a cat4-5 :D

They'll probably be happy not to be in Italy where I imagine they would go to jail for the money lost in shutting down the city. :erm:

Hope this does turn out to be a big non event as the potential damage and loss of life doesn't bear thinking about my thoughts are with the yanks for the next couple of days hope they get by without anything major. As for the election if it does do a lot of damage obama will make or break his presidency on how he responds to it and how he gets the numerous federal agencys to respond another new orleans and he is sunk.

I've updated the thread title given the seriousness of the storm, and also in a slightly geeky way because it's not a tropical storm any more, it can't be classed as a hurricane. Technically it's a post-tropical cyclone, but I've decided to go with the headline writers on this one.

This Storm formed 10 days ago and hit Cuba, killing 40 or more people - In the US the Death toll is currently around 16, 50 homes are on fire in Queens, New York and one woman in Canada has been killed by flying Debris.

"Super-storm" Sandy has swept into the US East Coast with hurricane-force winds, bringing flooding, cutting power and claiming at least 13 lives.

Sandy caused a record surge of seawater in New York City, flooding subway and road tunnels and plunging much of Lower Manhattan into darkness.

President Obama has declared a "major disaster" in New York state, AFP says.

A sensationalist damp squid.

After shovelling out mud and less pleasant stuff from a friend's place in Devon, and seeing on her ground floor walls exactly how far the water rose into her house, I will be diplomatic and congratulate the State of New York for their forward-planning.

Can I go home now? :D

To balance my comments: a good friend in WPB Florida was in fear of his life a few years back. The year before 'Catrina' I think. He 'hunkered down' and still breates in and out :) My neice and partner sheltered in their hotel bathroom during Catrina's rage. They still breathe in and out too.

"Damp squid"?

Not sure I agree, Caff, what with nearly 6 million homes being without power (half a million in Manhattan alone), a million people being ordered to evacuate their homes (375,000 in Lower Manhattan), 15 dead, and schools, businesses, and public transport being shut down in multiple states, 14,000 flights cancelled, and a large tanker being washed up on a street in Staten Island......

When one sees New York road tunnels and subways flooded I don't think you can say it was a nothing event Caff.At the present time 17 people have died.

Any news on G-BOAD Concorde?

It was sat on a fixed barge uncovered on the coast, hoping its not been written off by the damage, the space shuttle got damaged and that was under cover.

With those big delta wings things like kite and if it gets written off its in replaceable.

Those 17 that died is a tragedy, but I don't understand how? Other than them being stupid surely?

There was enough warning and even the government officials were tellin people get out staying would be stupid.

Pictures coming in slowly now of the devastation and it doesn't look good at all the tunnels are all flooded
And as said salt water won't do anything any good.

I don;t think being hit by flying debris or falling trees is particularly indicative of levels of intelligence....

The deaths include
Quote:

  • At least five people killed by the storm in New York state, including a 30-year-old man crushed by a falling tree in the New York City borough of Queens
  • Three killed in New Jersey, including two parents whose car was crushed by a falling tree; their two children, 11 and 14, survived
  • A woman in West Virginia who died in a collision in heavy snow caused by the storm

I know that this storm was terribly inconvenient for the US.

However, does anyone remember that before it hit the good old US of A that it has actually killed 60 odd people and damaged at least 17,000 homes In Cuba and Haiti ?

I know they're poor and insignificant, so who cares ?

Also they are not American and thus it's less likely to be a story. People relate to people from similar cultures and experiences, it's just the way it is. It's also not new, death occurs on a massive scale daily in Africa and beyond and we don't cover that too much either.

On the personal side, family in upstate New York are all fine - thankfully, have some damage to properties but we are sending crews up to sort that out. No tenants injured, which is the main thing. :) Was going to post in happy thread but saw this, so linked two together .

Seriously? - when the article states

Why would he be a chair of a group committed slowing climate change if he didn't believe in it?

The power and location of the storm is what is a 'freak' occurrence. The east coast doesn't usually experience storms of that size, part of the reason it's so damaging.

ive just come across this.

Quote:

Recent and Future Hurricane Names:

In the Atlantic Ocean, tropical storms that reach a sustained wind speed of 39 miles per hour are given a name, such as "Tropical Storm Fran". If the storm reaches a sustained wind speed of 74 miles per hour it is called a hurricane - such as "Hurricane Fran". So, hurricanes are not given names, tropical storms are given names, and they retain their name if they develop into a hurricane. The names that will be used for recent and future Atlantic storms are listed in the table below.

The most amazing thing about this entire storm is that New York and other counties, nearly everything is coming back to normal - the subway is 80% back to normal. and they were totally flooded.

Just think in the UK it would take months for services to be back to normal and it been less than a week. I was watching Sky news this morning, and l could not believe that l was watching the same thing.

I don't think its that high, they were only opening a few tunnels today and many are still full of water and also the stations pretty damaged by the salt water.

They are no where near, almost back to normal.

Looks like the storm has helped Obama and brought climate change back to the fore of an election where it hasn't figured at all: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-1...ted-boost.html

Quote:

Bloomberg, who had previously said he hadn’t decided whether he would publicly endorse his candidate of choice, said it was the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy that brought him off the sidelines to declare his support for Obama. In an opinion piece published on Bloomberg View, the Democrat-turned- Republican-turned-independent mayor said Obama has “taken major steps” to combat climate change, won “some important victories” on education and health care, and shares his values on abortion and gay rights.
I suspect climate change won't be treated as dismissively in future Republican campaigns whatever happens Tuesday.

I reckon the storm was engineered by Obama's aides - so close to an election it's bound to serve his cause. ;)

Yup. Things are looking better for him at the moment (although they were never that dire really), his advantage is that he really does look and act like a President when he needs too.

Tens of thousands of people whose homes were damaged by storm Sandy could soon need housing as cold weather closes in, New York's political leaders have warned.

Homes without heat would become uninhabitable as temperatures fell, state Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg put the figure at 30,000-40,000 people.

My in-laws just got back from NY today (Queen Mary 2) it was the last boat out last Sunday. They said that at the hotel they stayed in gave them a hurricane list of items they should buy, food, water, torch, batteries & the like, this was Friday. The ship was told to depart at 4.30pm (scheduled for 6pm) if not it was staying. Winds of 80mph+ & seas to match.

My bro-in-law is in mid-state NJ, and they only got petrol delivered yesterday (and that ran out after four hours - he queued for over an hour to fill his tank).

A lot of the shops are still shut (no power and/or stocks).
