Recording a daily series

Hi Folks,

I thought I had sussed how to record a series on my new Tivo box. That is until I tried to record something that was on at the same time each day! When I tell it to record anything weekly and click on 'Express Series Link' it's fine (although even though I've got it set to record only new shows, it still sets the repeats to record and I have to delete them) but the series link doesn't seem to work with daily shows! Am I doing something wrong, or is this a fault with the box?

You are doing something wrong, SWMBO has the lunch time episode of Neighbours being recorded each day, but the later showing on the same channel is ignored

Its set to New and Reruns. It was a series link from the TV guide

Which programme is it? It could be an error in the guide data. It's very unlikely to be a fault with the box, and it's probably not you either :)

Which show is it. It works for the Daily Show, and some of the guide data for that is shocking.

It's only for a week. It's on all next week on ITV 3 and called Marchlands. When I clicked to record the first one on Monday and then selected 'Express Series Link' nothing happened. It was just set to record normally with no little 'rs' on it to indicate the series link. Then when I got to the next day, it didn't show as having been set to record. In 'My Planned Recordings' there was no series link for this show at all. Everything else I set to record; weekly shows; showed a series link, but not this daily one. In the end, I've just set the show to record each day.

That's odd. It works fine for me.

Try deleting the planned recording, then go to Home->Settings->Network and make a connection. Wait half an hour then try setting up the series link again.

Thanks. I'll try it just once more and if it still doesn't work, I'll give your suggestion a go.
(By the way, what's 'SWMBO'?)

That was very clever! How did you do it?

By the way, a thought struck me about the daily recording. I have my series links set to record only new shows. Marchlands isn't new, so could that be the reason it won't record as a daily series? I set things to 'New' because otherwise all the repeats of every series of a particular show records as well.

Yes thats right. I just did a test of setting up a series link for Marchlands (using express link) and found that it didnt set every episode to record as some clashed with other series being recorded (need 4 tuners :D )

Re: Recording a daily series

Well in my case, there weren't any other programmes being recorded at the same time, so that wasn't the reason. I'll have another play around with it later on. (I feel as if I've had the Tivo Manual up to here at the moment!):banghead:

Yes, you've hit the nail on the head. If you ask for "New Only", it literally does that - programmes that aren't flagged as "new" won't record. You need "New & reruns". Annoyingly there isn't a way to say "this series only".

Yes, I thought it was possibly that. I shan't bother to try and set it up again now. I've already set each day to record separately. It would be great if there was an option to use "New & Reruns" for individual series recordings without having to alter the universal settings though wouldn't it? Because I mostly only want new series. It would be a pain to have to change the universal settings just for the odd re-run of something. Oh well.............!

Re: Recording a daily series

My daily episode of THE BILL is generally recorded properly on Watch, even though the same episode is repeated the next day (but it only records it once).

However, a couple of weeks ago it went wappy and recorded everything twice and on two days recorded Emergency Bikers instead of the Bill! However, I suspect this was a mistake at Watch rather than Tivo.

THE BILL is the only show I MUST SEE. Why did ITV drop it? Big mistake in my opinion.

You can do that. Instead of using Express Series Link, use Explore This Show, then Get a Series Link, then Options.

Or if you've already used Express Series Link, go to Manage my Series Links, and change the options from there.

Oh I see. Thanks for that Spiderplant. It's all so different from my old V+HD box. Recording a series was a whole lot easier with that. Frankly I found it a lot more straightforward. You seem to have to jump through a lot of hoops to do anything with the Tivo. It's one menu after another! :(

I agree with you about 'The Bill' Oliver. I was sorry too when ITV dropped it. I think we saw every episode, but I wouldn't want to see them all again. It was a Police Soap really.

Kop; thanks for the Google link. I've never seen that before. I've bookmarked it and I'll use it myself in the future! Most impressive! :D

Although Tivo may seem more difficult to set up series links than V+ at first, it doesn't take too much time to realise that Tivo is better.

I remember the first day that I got Tivo, I'd written all the days and times of every series link that I had on V+. I then entered them into tivo at the same exact day and time. I was then surprised that Tivo was saying it would record a particular show at an earlier day and time to what I'd set the series link up to. This was because tivo has 3 recordable tuners and the V+ just 2. So for shows that I'd had to set manually to a repeat showing on V+ due to recording clashes on the first showing, Tivo knew that now wasn't necessary and recorded the first showing. More than that, for every recording clash that i had on the V+, I had to figure out how to resolve that clash myself, spending time searching for repeat showings; Tivo does all this automatically; all you have to do is set the series link and tivo does the rest. It's not perfect because there isn't a repeat showing of everything, but Recording hiccups will show you any problems that it can't resolve; the V+ has no feedback in that regard at all.

The odd show clash that Tivo can't resolve can often be resolved by changing series link priorities; making shows on channels that don't have repeat showings so much, a higher priority than those that do.

The concept is different for Tivo with regard to series links, and once you realise that, Tivo is way better than the V+.

^^ What passingbat said :D

Re: Recording a daily series

I am getting there. At the moment, I feel I have to check absolutely everything I've set up a series link for because even though I've set it to record only new shows, it sometimes does the repeats that week as well, even though they're on at different times and sometimes even different series numbers! Then I have to go through the lot and delete the individual shows.
Mind you, I wish I'd done what Passingboat said and copied down all the shows I'd recorded on the old V+ box and transferred them to the Tivo. Never thought about it. :dunce:
