Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Hi there

I was recently moved from 100mbit up to 120mbit, and I heard that the upload would be moved from 5mbit to 10mbit, just wondered where can I find out when this will take place exactly? Would rather not ring CS.

Thanks in advance.
Regards

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

If you've gone to 120Mbit, then you'll have a 12Mbit upload immediately.

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

I am getting 120mbit (12mb/sec) download speed, but my upload is still at the old rate of 5mbit (620kb/sec)

Or is 12mb/sec speed actually what 100mbit gets?

Log into My VM and it'll tell you what you are on

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

I've logged in and looked and checked and it says my area is ready.

Quote:

Congratulations! The new double speed boosts are already up and running in your area.

We've finished upgrading the fibre optic network in your area.
I just did a speedtest and I'm still getting 100mbit with an upload of 5mbit

BenMcr 25-09-2012 15:37

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

No, you need to see what it says before that. For instance mine says:

Quote:

Exciting news - we're giving you a free broadband boost to up to 120Mb, the UK's fastest ever widely available broadband!

Our engineers are still working on the fibre optic network in your area to make speeds of 120Mb and upwards possible. We'll be in touch as soon as we're ready to upgrade you
Which means I'm still on 100Mbit.

The postcode checker doesn't have the 120Mbit schedule yet.

---------- Post added at 15:37 ---------- Previous post was at 15:35 ----------

Anyway, I've just checked and as far as I know only two places are currently piloting 120Mbit - Hertford isn't one of them

Simcut 25-09-2012 15:49

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Thanks for the reply. I've checked the message and it says I am ready for the double speed boost, and that the engineers have completed work on the fibre optic.

Rang CS and spoke to some guy in India, to be honest I couldnt understand him that well (I normally can) but the line was quite bad, but he was saying something about calling me back tomorrow, he said that my area is ready (he can see that) but for some reason its not moved from 100 to 120 yet.

Dont know if he was fobbing me off though, not sure if he'll ring back tomorrow...

btw, my message in the green box shows this:-

http://gyazo.com/9a2fe48f5f0649e5550...png?1348583643

I then went to the 'check' page and thats where I got the info in my previous post.

Will just have to wait & see, I'm surprised the checker doesnt have the 120mbit schedule yet? Any idea when the 120mbit is being rolled out? if my area is ready it might as well be rolled out to us now...

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

My post code checker has me down for between December 2012 and February 2013. This is a change form the previous March and June 2013.

So, estimates can change. Also work on the network can become apparent well before upgrade day. For instance, today we in Coventry got put on to 6 downstream channels instead of 4.

No you're not.

12MB/sec is 96Mbit.

The 100Mb service from VM is actually 111Mb so you should get at least 13MB/sec.

If you were on 120Mb you'd be getting around 16MB/sec.

Speedtests tell you the speed of your connection to the internet, not of your local line.

If you want to know what service you're on with absolute accuracy look at your modem status page, not some internet flash speedtest.

Nope thats the bandwidth network end, youre after operation config

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Would appear to me that people getting 120/12 are only actually getting around 11.44Mb upload in the config, with everything else in play I can see actual speeds being around 11 to 11.2Mb so why are VM undercutting the upload speeds so much? It's bad enough them only giving around 9.7Mb upload on their "10Mb" upload. seems the higher they go the larger the gap gets between what they state and what they actually allocate to you. Yet with download they give way over what they state, 120Mb is actually getting 126Mb in the config file.

I guess when 240Mb comes out (if they keep to the same pattern ie 30, 60, 120, 240) they will give you about 256Mb and the upload will be clipped around the edges again giving you about 22.88Mb instead of the 24Mb you'd expect on a 10:1 ratio.

Its configured for 133mb down and 12 up

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3922/34806759.png

Of course with overheads you get about 125 down and just over 11 up

ileikcaek 27-09-2012 20:34

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Not quite.

133000000 bps = just a tiny bit over 126.83Mbps (not 133)
12000000 bps = just a tiny bit over 11.44Mbps (not 12)

Virgin would like you to say 12000000 bps = 12Mbps but it's certainly not. It would have to be 12600000bps to even get a chance of hitting 12Mbps. Ideally it would need to be 13000000bps as a little extra fluff for the majority to get it.

I know when I had 30Mb the upload config was 3300000bps which translates to 3.14Mbps a lot more generous than they are being now with the higher tiers. It meant I always hit 3Mbps and usually over it.

Wrong.

For line speed:

133000000bps = 133000kbps = 133Mbps = 16.625MBps

Straightforward SI prefixes are used for data rates.

Available throughput is another matter of course...

ileikcaek 27-09-2012 22:14

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

I just took another look via calculators elsewhere and you are right. I wonder why google's own calculator is so wrong then. If you google '133000000bps in Mbps' it will say just over 126.83Mbps as the answer.

I've always used google's calculator so never thought to look elsewhere.

yeah, it is weird how there is still so much inconsistency between the tiers. I think they need to take a breath and bring everything into line before they press on with anymore rollouts and ensure everyone is 10:1

There isn't an inconsistency. There is a logical split:

All the pre-April tiers have a 10:1 upload.

None of the current sold tiers have 10:1 at the moment.

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

My post was made on 30th September. Edinburgh only got the 1.75 => 5 Mbps upgrade between 27-29th March. Close enough.

And since there was never a 100/10 teir, all 100Mb users will be stuck on 100/5 with an STM down to 1.75/2.5, so technically, some parts are *still* stuck on 100/2.5 which is even worse

There is/was a 100/10 tier - and anyone who upgraded to 100 before April should be still on it. But as we've got over that on other threads several times, don't think it's worth doing so again.

qasdfdsaq 01-10-2012 14:18

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Nobody could have upgraded to 100 in this area before April because 100 was not available here before April.

50/5 was only completed at the end of March, with STM down to 1.75 introduced simultaneously. 100 came around a month later, by which time only 100/5 was available.

I hate to be anal dude but as you have used mb and MB then that is more or less your correct speed. You have been provisioned for 100mbits which translates to a maximum download speed of 12 megabytes per second. If you are getting 10 then there is nothing to worry about.

Don't worry about being anal lol. So theoretically I should be getting around 12.8MB/s? I would certainly like to know where the other 2.8MB/s are going as it equates to around a 20mb line. :(

Before I was 'upgraded' to 100mb I was able to download at 6.4MB/s on VM's 50mb package.

If you're going to be anal (which you weren't by the way), at least get it right!

In terms of actual day to day useage, I would rather this than go back to Virgin. Youtube works, iplayer works, I can use iplayer HD etc etc etc

If it werent for the disconnects it would be fine. Im guessing by the fact that it gets worse in the rain that the cab is leaking

It won't be the cab it will be a duff joint in your final 100m or so of twisted pair. Given how useless Openreach are you'll need the patience of Job and plenty of luck getting it fixed. It was a rubbish BT line that drove me to cable. Maybe one day there will be reliable consumer internet connectivity....

I had one of those perfect lines when I was on ADSL with VM. It was really good. I was on 8meg ADSL at full speed with VM for a price that their Cable side could only offer with a 4meg connection at the time. Then the line went bad and BT moved me to another twisted pair. My ADSL speed went through the floor and stayed there. I moved over to Cable then rather than fight with BT. I would fight them, if VM ever give me reason to leave, and I would win. Who has the time for that though, when VM engineers are such great folk? They've always been excellent for me. I'm not so sure about some of their advertising guys on occasion, who have never been entirely wedded to certain concepts such as 'honesty' or 'legallity', but the engineers they send out are easily the best available that I am aware of. In my experience anyway. I'm sure there will be bad examples out there, but the hit rate is really good for me.

Ah the good ol' lift & shift. We'll see where the problem is then I guess.

If it's the cab at fault, I'd have expected lots of people in the area to be complaining - unless most people don't notice their line resetting 40 times a day and speed getting halved, which would be disappointing...

Openreach?

I guessed the fact they look after the access network for hundereds of ISPs nationally they would be business as usual 24 hours

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Exchange, maybe... but FTTC isn't connected to the exchange.

craig with all due respect you cant tell if you have a perfect line. Clearly it isnt perfect if its dropping out.

It could be your modem, but my money is on a line issue between the cab and your house. It could be noise interference (most likely) or could be something like a joint fault.

You dont understand, the line test, which tests the line from the master socket to the cabinet came back with a perfect score of 72, and no errors. So yes, you can tell if you have a perfect line

It turned out to be the kit at the exchange, the OR engineer connected me to a different port and its worked fine ever since, without any dropouts

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

I had a complaint escalated regarding 120Mb in Leicester.

My VM homepage says its available and the checker says the same.

Had the run around with faults and customer services as I was on 100/5, eventually someone from e.complaints explained that I was on the wrong "code" (was on XXL, not 100 apparently). She changed this and now I have 100/10.

Couldn't give a time scale for 120 uplift though, (as is already well covered on here).

My concern is that I am getting sub 75Mb speedtests now, so any uplift generally will need work to be done.

I was hoping the LE3 outage last week was this, but no change yet.

craigj2k12 17-10-2012 19:55

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

LE3 being a known oversubbed area and they are putting people on 10mbit upload pre upstream upgrades

welcome to the world of xDSL craig.

lucky that it turned out to be a port problem.

yes is normal for this area :)

whack the speeds up when no capacity doesnt matter.

I was offered 60/6 for no price increase but rejected as had to commit to 18 months and I plan to leave in 2 months when got FTTC, and 120mbit (upload not specified) for a very small price increase, also rejected for same reason.

It was a 15 minute test that showed the line quality was perfect, the fact that im using the same line now without issue suggests its the broadband kit in the cabinet at fault

Dont hold your breath re FTTC, its already 2 months late (original RFS Sept 2012) Id expect the current Dec 2012 date to slip.

I think Ill be doing the same though as the peak speeds responsiveness are suffering again event hough the TBB graphs dont look that bad.

Interesting the Openreach "when can I gets me some infinities" page now shows your cabinet location. Well, supposedly. Mine shows up inside someones house. On a council estate. That will work well.

Hmm, doesn't show cab locations for me... I wonder if the locations are postcode based?

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

I checked 'my virgin media' today and it would appear my area (Glasgow, G66) has already recieved the 120MB upgrade.

My superhub is in modem mode so I'm unsure how to check power levels to confirm the speed increase.

Can anyone help?

do you not agree that if there was a intermment noise problem and the noise stopped during a test that the test would not pick up the noise and as such be misleading?

a 15 minute test is nothing.

actually they are failing a huge chunk of FTTC estimated dates. ignition's area eg. is 2 years late and still no sign of rollout. Check tbb.

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

Some parts of Edinburgh are nearly 2 years late as well, though I've seen a good dozen or so fibre cabs pop up on my route to work so it's getting there...

Mind you it's ironic the centre of town has "no plans" for FTTC while the exchange next to it is trialling 1Gbps FTTP.

Chrysalis 22-10-2012 07:14

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

also check my sig sept 2012 for FTTC yet I dont have it ;)

latest I got from openreach is 6 dec 2012.

It depends on what you are on now. If you already been doubled then the only remaining upgrade is to 120Mb if you are on 100Mb.

If you are on 100Mb check here. http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...e/td-p/1530876

If you haven't been doubled then type your postcode in here. http://doublespeed.virginmedia.com/

It's anyone's guess as to when 200Mb+ comes in.

i rang bt and got told end of december before i can get fttc of them even tho my exchange has been done since august , can get 120mb at same time off virgin but seriously thinking about bt as live not far from exchange so would get top speed quite easily, cannot get over 100mb off virgin on speed test when ppl on here can get 104mb i'm lucky to get 85mb at the most

Some of us have not got the first increase yet, yet alone the second. Looking like Croydon will have to wait until April next year to get the first increase.

An improvement over the original upload speed increase which took 18 months for us to get it after it was announced.

Edit: Dates are always moving, got this for a few nearby postcodes: We estimate your area will be ready by the end of:
December 2012

It's not the distance to exchange that affects FTTC, it's the distance to the cabinet. In fact if you're so close to the exchange that there is not cabinet then you're unlikely to be able to get FTTC!

Re: Where can I find out when my upload speed increases?

My area is down for FTTC/TP so don't have a clue which one i'm getting there is a Cabinet round the corner from my road and there has been a new pole been installed by the Cabinet in question
