Virgin capping 100mb users@85mb?

Hello people,

ive noticed that my 100mb connection seems to be capping out at 85mb alot of time, is this an network issue as alot of people on 100mb are reporting 85mb and seems a common reported speed going about, seems abit too much of a coinsidance for so many people to get 85mb?????:confused::confused:

Ironically I thought I was being capped at 85mb a couple of nights ago. Usually never have problems with getting full speed at any time of the day. I increased the number of connections in my usenet client to 30 (up from 20) and it just about crawled to 100mb. Wouldn't surprise me if they are trying out some new means of capping

I'm guessing the reference is because Paul M is on 50 and waiting on the doubling... Coffeeguy's 100/10 shows that was probably a price reduced 100 Mbps product. Of course both will be the same price.

Speedtest.net results don't mean anything, i never usually max out my connection speed on them. Saying that i just did:

Download a Torrent of Ubuntu or something and you should easily max out your connection.

Re: Virgin capping 100mb users@85mb?

How is your system configured?

I had the same problem after being upgraded to the 100mb connection, until I realized that the router I was using was rated at 100mb/s. I upgraded to a Gigabit router and Cat5e cables and now I can regularly achieve 100mb/s.

I seem to remember that all traffic across any Ethernet connection will introduce overheads (which will not be measured by the speed tests), reducing the quoted speed.

I am sure some of the more knowledgeable people on this site may be able to confirm this.

Re: Virgin capping 100mb users@85mb?

As the OP posted a speedtest result he must be comparing his speed by their usage (unless he says otherwise later in the thread)

As we should all know by now they can only ever give a snapshop of the speed and routing conditions to a single point on a single connection at any one time and that a multi connection download will always be a more accurate guage of capable speed where as the single connection can be effected by browser, bottlenecks on the route, load on the far server..etc..

I can only hope that when my 10MB gets upgraded to 20 MB that I'll get the 10MB I'm currently not getting afternoons and evenings.:erm:

my average is about 104 but I always do it to London which is a good distance away :P

my best: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/09/34.png

Yet to notice any sort of caps though and it's consistently over 100 at all times of the day.

Haven't noticed the 85mb cap for the last 2 evenings so I assume they were trialling 'something new' in selected areas? The truth he is out there :D

Can't say I've noticed any capping? Just done a test to confirm and it looks fine here.

Don't worry the secondary completely free upgrade to 30Mb/s will mess it up completely and the super hub won't connect at all 1 hour after connected :td:. then youll have something to moan about...

Re: Virgin capping 100mb users@85mb?

I can't say I have noticed any capping like suggested since my 100Mb upgrade from 60Mb.

What I have noticed though is my pings are higher, which does not make sense at all. on 60Mb I was getting consistently around 5ms ping sometimes even less! but since upgrading to 100Mb it is now around 10ms and sometimes higher - rarely lower. That's just me being nit picky though, other than that it is amazing and I am surprised I got 10Mb upload off the bat too considering most upgrading to 100Mb only get 5Mb right now.
