Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Virgin Media has formally announced its Virgin TV Anywhere service, with an oline and iPad service that includes TiVo like services, on-demand content and remote recording arriving in the Autumn and an Android version in early 2013.
There;s been plenty of talk about the Virgin Anywhere service, and it will inevitably draw comparison with Sky Go and Sky's apps for iPad. However, the Virgin TV Anywhere service does have some rather nifty strings to its bow – most of them based heavily on its TiVo service. TiVoutstanding For customers without the service there is limited online TiVo like recommendations, live TV and significant amounts of on-demand content. But the real winners are the TiVo customers who not only get the PC-based TiVo functionality but also a fully featured tablet app which will double as a remote control. "Want to be in control of your TV? Virgin TV Anywhere puts the power in our customers hands," emotes the company. "Virgin Media: TiVo customers can manage their TV planning wherever they want, be it online or via our new app allowing them to search for shows, discover new content, set recordings and manage all their favourite content stored on their TiVo box. "A brilliant 'App' exclusively for TiVo customers available on Apple iPad and other devices providing live channels, access to record shows, to tinker with their TiVo box from anywhere and even use at home as a remote control, explains Virgin Media. "Customers can do all the usual things, like pause, rewind and fast forward through shows, but with just the flick of their screen." The iPad app is coming in Autumn – so probably not in the next few weeks – and there is an expectation that the Android version will land in the early part of 2013. We'll be checking out the service as soon as we possibly can, and comparing it to its UK market rival from Sky. But for now - here are the first pictures of the service. http://www.techradar.com/news/televi...n-2012-1095475 |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Im guessing that Skys channels will not be on there for people to watch live. I think if they do Sky wont be happy
|
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
it will be good if they have nice Hi Def streams and even better if it does not count towards your traffic management quota
|
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Why is android later?
Surely its easier to get the app put on Android first? |

Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Still no official word on how the devices will communicate with each other. Does the TiVo box need networking? Or will the app commands go via the Internet and back down to the Tivo? Seems unlikely - but there has been no mention of any additional hardware or wired home networking being required so far.

Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
I'm sure I've seen it suggested that some of the delay may have been due to finding a way to network the TiVo through its existing connection to the Virgin network, rather than having to connect it to a home hub???
|
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
The big question for me is whether sky channels (specifically skysports) will be available to stream live through the website.

Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
You don't need you TiVo networked to use the app, you need it networked to use it as a remote.
|
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
So, I will need to plug the TiVo in to my router. Thus requiring either a homeplug or long lead depending on where I want to use it? Why can't they just supply a wireless dongle to plug in to the back, or better yet why was bluetooth not included in the first place? Smacks of a lack of foresight.
|
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Because wireless and bluetooth are rubbish for streaming video content. That would also make the box more expensive to manufacture.
|
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
For remote control I'd say there are several options :-
Use your normal internet connection and then back to the TIVo via its built in internet connection although the lag will be horrendous VM supply a wireless dongle perhaps at extra cost (like Sky does for Anytime+) VM recommend a home plug solution VM just say plug it into your router via a cable Sky don't appear to have any problems in suggesting to their customers to plug the Sky box into the router to get Sky Anytime+ (they have been running TV ads telling their customers to do this) so I can't see any problem with VM doing the same |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012

It is a moot point though, because it is only needed for the remote control functions. |

Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
I thought the whole point of them delaying the remote side of the app for over a year was for them to come up with a solution that didn't require you to plug it into a router.
I don't have a problem with plugging mine in as it is right next to the router. But VM seemed to be acting like it was the end of the world a few months ago and there was no way their customers would be able to cope with connecting it to a router. Have the customers become more intelligent over the last couple of months, what has changed? |

Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Hmmm. Going to reserve judgement for when it comes out. Need to see what channels are on there etc. I do have experience of The Sky Mobile app and its pretty good for when you're out and about. But if there's a TiVo remote control on this one then it's clearly aimed for when you're in or out. Not sure why I'd use the Sky Mobile App if I was in front of a TV with Sky on it. So this is going to be interesting.
Although I can't see all arguments for whether it's free or not and what that means, it does seem to me that companies are bundling things in under existing charges to try and tie more customers in. E.G. Sky mobile App is 'free' to Sky customers. 'F1' is free to Sky Sports subscribers. Clearly these things aren't free, they're just packaged in as part of the money you pay. I'd love free Sky F1 if anyone knows where I can get it without having to pay £25 a month. |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
jeeeez the app hasn't been officially released yet and already the vultures are picking at the bones!

BBC 1 BBC 2 ITV Channel 4 Channel 5 BBC 3 BBC 4 I'm guessing the channels are going to be the core Freeview stations minus all +1 variants, all SKY owned channels and all channels not carried by Virgin such as Al Jazeera and the Food Network. Once you take away all of the above you're pretty much left with 30 channels. 1. BBC 1 2. BBC 2 3. ITV 4. Channel 4 5. Channel 5 6. ITV 2 7. BBC Three 8. BBC Four 9. ITV 3 10. Yesterday 11. More 4 12. Dave 13. ITV 4 14. E4 15. Film 4 16. 5 USA 17. 5* 18. Quest 19. 4/7 20. 4 Music 21. Viva 22. BBC News 23. BBC Parliament 24. Really 25. CBeebies 26. CITV 27. ITV HD 28. 4 HD 29. BBC HD 30. BBC One HD If I'm getting this service included in my package at no extra cost then great! It's not as good as SKY Go however it's miles better than what I have at the moment which is nothing. I must admit TV on the go is not a big selling point for me personally. In fact it's a service I'll probably hardly use however it adds more value to my subscription, which is something nobody can argue with. |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
If that is the case Chad then it looks like yet again that we will be getting a inferior version of what Sky currently offer with no Sky Sports or Movies to boot.

Remember we will have access to TV on demand and catch up tv too. We will also be able to access records on our TiVo boxes too. The interesting thing will be can we watch something on the go whilst it's recording? So if I'm recording Man Utd Vs. Man City on SKY Sports can I watch the recording as it's happening. Sure it still won't be live but I'll maybe only 10 or 15 seconds behind the live broadcast. The original article in What HiFi did suggest the channels you can access depend on your package. So maybe 30 channels are the basic package and people on XL will be able to watch the likes of ESPN and the Discovery Channel. Away to watch the Scotland game. C'mon Scotland!!!!! |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
BBC , ITV , C4 , C5 content can already be streamed on tablet/smartphone on the respective catchup apps  are these defo included.

What HiFi where the first to have access to Virgin Anywhere and broke the story a couple of weeks ago. Whilst watching recordings won't be available from launch, it seems to be one of many updates we should see in 2013. ---------- Post added at 19:43 ---------- Previous post was at 19:11 ---------- Okay I've done some more digging and I'm a little confused about the info to hand. The Inquirer states: "Virgin told us that it expects to have around 30 live channels available from launch across genres such as sports, kids, news and entertainment." However T3.Com gives an alternative version: "Boasting 2,000 hours of on-demand content across 30 channels" http://www.t3.com/news/virgin-media-...in-tv-anywhere The T3 article suggests there will be 2000 hours of content over 30 on demand channels plus linear channels too. This seems to make sense because Virgin do offer 30 channels of on demand material if you are on their top package: 1. BBC 2. ITV Net Player 3. 4 on Demand 4. US Boxsets 5. Warner TV 6. Aardman Animations 7. Comedy Central 8. CBS Reality 9. E! Entertainment 10. FX 11. CBS Action 12. Discovery 13. National Geographic 14. Bio 15. History 16. Crime & Investigation 17. PBS America 18. MTV 19. Extreme Sports Channel 20. ESPN Classic 21. Military History 22. CNBC 23. Baby Channel 24. SKY 1 25. SKY Living 26. SKY Arts 27. SKY News 28. SKY Movies 29. SKY Sports 30. Virgin Central So what is really launching? |

The whole 'stream recordings' feature can't come soon enough, and will hopefully open the door for box-to-box streaming too. As for what's available, I'm sure its 3-ish linear TV channels to stream + over 2000 hours of VOD. |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
I guess streaming live TV and VOD are easy i would suspect that your Tivo is not actually involved in either of these two and the streams come direct from Virgin via your internet connection.
To stream what you have recorded would need direct access to your box and I suspect this is where things get complicated like needing your Tivo to be networked, I believe in the version that is being prepped for you only need to network your Tivo if you want to use the app as a remote. |

Sky Go for iOS first launched in July 2011 (just over one year ago), with an initially extremely limited selection of live TV to stream (this has since grown, gradually). It was updated in November of last year with on-demand films, and updated again in July of this year with more on-demand content. The Sky+ app for the iPad was updated in August of this year to allow the app to be used as a remote control and also enable full access to the Planner to allow recordings to be scheduled and managed. Both of those features require the Sky box to be on the same network as the iPad, via Ethernet or WiFi (£60 dongle from Sky, or a cheaper 3rd party bridge). These features are currently only available to Sky customers who have the latest Amstrad Sky+HD boxes, as the new EPG is required. The only thing Sky has had "for years" is the basic Remote Record. |

If its a long term win for Sky whilst Virgin Media are left undercutting themselves in order to retain business, doesn't that translate into a long term win for Virgin's customers who will see their costs going down?
I can't help but think that the piece on seenit is quite biased. They suggest that TiVo "lacking on a number of fronts" on the basis of a review they did over a year ago and before 2 major updates. The review includes such gems as the patently false "I delete these suggested episodes unwatched but still it records more. I want it to stop but there seems no way to make it." |

Content has now becoming very important and VM don't have any. I was uneasy about it when VM sold off their channels and when they sold their stake in UK TV, and I think they have left themselves in a vunerable position, now only getting what Sky allow with regards to new content. To be fair, VM only had one channels's worth of content, but Sky did want that content and the Living branded channel. I suspect the guy who wrote that article is a bit anti VM, but he's right in that Sky made a smart move launching Now TV and an even smarter move including it on Youview. He's also right that VM are at a dissadvantage in not owning content rights; BT have learnt that lesson and done something about it. |
Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012
Virgin have loads of content. There are thousands of hours of stuff to watch on demand and they carry almost every channel anybody really wants, with the obvious exception.
I know now TV has been confirmed for the talk talk you view, but is there any word on the Bt one yet, or even when it will launch? Bt are falling behind even in terms of their own product! |
