wireless off v modem mode

Evening all
I have just set up a new SH to replace NTL 200 modem for my 30Mb upgrade.

I have been using an Apple Airport Express for wireless and decide to continue with that. However it only seems to work ok while the SH is also in wireless mode. My imac sees both no problem, but iPad only sees my AE.

I tried setting SH to modem mode as advised by many users on here, but it wouldn't work with the AE. :(
I had to reset the SH and turn on wireless mode again.
If I turn off wireless in SH settings, how is this different from modem only mode?
Or should I just leave the SH wireless running though I'm not using it?
SH updated straightaway to r36 and ADSLguide has me downloading 29.4Mbps so I am happy, but confused :)

When you switched to modem mode, did you use the active port? See here for assistance - http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...MER_TYPE=Cable

Yes I did, cheers :)
Thought I had come across other users saying modem only mode was problematic on r36,
but maybe I imagined it...

Re: wireless off v modem mode

when you disable wireless on the shub it is still a wired router with all 4 ports working, full routing fuctionality and nat etc etc, it just isnt a wireless access point. In modem mode there is no nothing, no wireless, no 4 port switch, no dhcp etc etc, it is just a modem which you need to attach a router to (port 1 only)

there is nothing wrong with modem mode on r36, although there are ongoing issue with the shub working with the AE

No problems with modem mode on R36

I have mine running with an AE with no problems.

There is a guide on here somewhere ;-)

Totally confused as when I tried to get my Time Capsule to work with the SH it would not configure so I turned it into Modem mode and it works fine as a modem connected via a 7m RJ45 cable to my time capsule which is upstairs. I found the range of the wireless SH was not very good.

I use my SH (r36) in MODEM mode with both my AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express. Works a treat.

Yes that would work and it works for me if I ever fire up the extra Airport Express to run speakers outside or I want to run my printer two doors down but I could not get it working to extend or work with the SH in WiFi mode.....

Check the wireless settings on your snub, some older devices may not be able to see it if it is in 5ghz mode

I'm in R36 modem mode with a Homeplug into my office. I bring the ethernet to a Gig switch and from there into my Airport Express. Works pefectly. Someties I switch away from VM to my BT Infinity circuit and the Airport Express extends to that seemlessly.

Could be a setup thing in the AU.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

I have only been able to get my Apple airport extreme to work with the SH (R36) by using DMZ mode. The Extreme is in Bridge mode using a fixed address with a DCHP reservation in the SH for the Extreme. The Airport Extreme then provides both wired and wi-fi connections that are used by the Mac, iPad, 2 itouch devices and a Blackberry Curve. The wireless in the SH is turned off.
OpenDNS is used for all devices that have a fixed address within a closed network. DeCrypt OpenDNS is not used as it was found to cause the SH to re-boot during high loads, or at least once during every hour of activity.
It is possible to plug my Mac desktop into the SH in Modem mode and get it to work just by using DCHP and very unusual addresses appear to populate the fields. If this same method is used for getting the Extreme to connect to the SH in modem modem mode it fails to correctly fill the fields, even the mask address has some missing numbers gives 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0.
So I have used DMZ since the day of having the SH but every time the SH has had an update I have had a go at modem mode and so far failed.
The Airport extreme used to work well with the NTL home 120 that was just a cable modem.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

When you tried modem mode, you did put the AE into "Shared Public IP" mode?

Then I would reboot the SH (already in modem mode) which should find the AE and you get the green light. Did you get the green light at all in modem mode?

I'm on R36 BTW.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

Yes. For the Internet connection on the AE "Shared Public Ip addresses" selected and for connecting to the SH tried DCHP and a fixed address. All were tried with re=booting AE in each case. The SH and AE had been powered down and re-started as well. No green light, yellow flash with indication of cannot connect to internet. With other settings it complained about start and end address of DCHP. Perhaps my use of DMZ had not cleared from both devices so have tried factory reset on both but have ended in the same situation so returned to DMZ. Seems strange that I can navigate around all the pitfalls and settings of DMZ but cannot manage a simple connect to the SH. Thanks for your ideas as I bet in the end it may be something easily overlooked in the AE.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

Does this help as a checklist?

AIRPORT EXTREME CONFIGURED FOR VIRGIN CABLE

AE = Airport Extreme
AU = Airport Utility

AU->Manual Setup->Internet->Internet Connection->Connection Sharing->Share a public IP Address).

Check/configure:

--\Manual Setup
----\Internet
------\TCP/IP
--------Configure IPv4 -> Using DHCP
--------IP Address -> Renew lease (should set itself to your VM static ip-address)
--------DNS Servers -> set to the OPENDNS values. 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220
--------Connection Sharing -> Off (Bridge Mode) [N.B. SuperHub in Router Mode only)]------\DHCP
--------DHCP Beginning Address -> 192.168.1.1 (just a suggestion)
--------DHCP Ending Address -> 192.168.1.200
------\NAT
--------Enable default host -> (untick and leave blank)
--------Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol -> tick

If the light turns green, it won’t be necessary to switch off all PCs & networking equipment and switch back on (slowly) in order, VM modem Ã* AE Ã* any powerlines or switches Ã* finally PC/ laptop/ xbox etc.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

Will look on Monday during daylight, the DCHP start and end address is different to what I used but worth a go in the way you have outlined.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

Many thanks Sephiroth I have the green light and all connected devices work. In the past I was trying the settings you indicate with 192.168.0.xx and was much less structured about the order of things rebooting and and the order of starting up for the first time to get a connection. Since the AE does not have automatic port forwarding for Vuze and the SH does I have managed to get that set as well.

You have proved it can be done. Thanks. ;)

Sephiroth 27-08-2012 12:59

Re: wireless off v modem mode

I suspect that 192.168.0.xx clashes wiith a latent function of the SH (it is the native address of the SH in router mode). Anyway, if I'm wrong about that it doesn'tmatter.

Re: wireless off v modem mode

Another good reason for using the Supahub in Moden mode is that is no longer re-boots itself when when using OpenDNS Opendecrypt.
