Speedtest software
Apologies if this has been mentioned before but there's a good speed tester available here:
Jack Dinn's Auto Speed Tester On my link, at least, it consistently shows the full speed I'm provisioned for - Something that speedtest.net never did, no matter which server I selected... |
Re: Speedtest software
I second that - and not because the Ferret gets full speed!
|
Re: Speedtest software
I see it uses the TBB 10MB test file - be interesting to see what speeds people get who can never get the TBB speedtest to report their full package speeds.

JDast does not use the TBB 10M file unless you have changed the configurations. By default the download configurations should be set to use a multiple threaded download from all these servers (at the same time) and should therefore always "max out" your connection :- http://london1.linode.com/100MB-london.bin,100 http://speedtest.tweak.nl/100mb.bin,100 http://download.thinkbroadband.com/100MB.zip,100 http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test,100 Cheers all :D, JD. |

Ah - my quick glance through the settings lead me astray - I see it is greyed out...
|
Re: Speedtest software
:D aye that top half is a different method of measuring "speed" , it measures the time taken to download a single file and calculates it from that but it was superseded by the measurement of actual throughput "the bottom half of the download configs" which is a much better way of doing it (for many reasons) and so is set as the default.
Good stuff :), thx. |
Re: Speedtest software
JDast is a service to mankind.
Simples. |

Seems good :) thanks

Re: Speedtest software
It can't test my upload speed for some reason?
/edit weird on third try it worked ... |
Re: Speedtest software
I sometimes get that on first use when turning JDast on. I've seen it once when the upstream was busy and reporting low speeds subsequently.
|
Re: Speedtest software
if you have a problem with the upload giving an error "no data flowing after 3 seconds" (latest beta says 5 seconds as opposed to 3), then try increasing you upload setting "Clipping time". There is sometimes a delay before the upload data starts flowing and can "time out" (depending on individual system/setup). an increase of clipping time should allow more time for the data to start flowing before it starts testing the throughput.
Hope this helps. |

Re: Speedtest software
EDIT:-
Sorry, are you saying jdast is giving incorrect results ? or am i completely at the wrong end of the stick. I try to help when problems crop up with it but reading your comment again im not 100% sure your saying that :-/ is this a default configuration ? i assume you should be measuring 100Mb/s down and 10Mb/s up ? |

Yeah, the upstream is way out, it was measuring around the 20mb mark for most of the test
Here is another try http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/at...1&d=1345718637 Compared with speedtest.net https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2012/08/9.png |
Re: Speedtest software
yea , its a long story , spent over a year trying to get the upload to work properly for 100% of people & systems.
Its the faster upload connections that sometimes have a spike at the very beginning of the internal measurement method which gets averaged into the rest of the test. I shan't go into it all here. you can either increase the clipping time to cut of the first few secs of the upload throughput. EDIT:- o and if you have been using multi-threads in the upload configs then switch them back to 1 thread. END EDIT. OR switch to using the adapter hook measurement method. (configurations / general tab / bottom right tick box "Use adapter hooks.....") (dont forget to choose your correct network adapter in the dropdown list right next to it). Using your adapters data is extremely accurate but does have a drawback of measuring any other throughput at the time of testing so if you have a lot of LAN traffic using the same adapter this can be a problem. EDIT:- Although you can set the configs to check for any throughput before running a test and if it finds there is data flowing already it will quit that particular test. |
Re: Speedtest software
Brilliant.

Re: Speedtest software
Great software that was! funny it show mine as 108Mb down and 22Mb up ? (I wish I had 20 Meg up lol)
Should be 103Mb down and 9.7Mb up I re-test again and it come back correct this time: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/08/76.jpg |
Re: Speedtest software
please read my post above :D
i would suggest if you have fast upload speeds that you use the adapter hooks to measure the speeds (i describe how to in my last post above). Cheers. |
Re: Speedtest software
Good piece of software over all, I presume you built it yourself? Puts the superhub software to shame seeing as thats been worked on by a big team for over 18 months and still bug ridden :P
|
Re: Speedtest software
I agree superhub is horrible via wifi issues and still not fixed yet with R36 beta. Virgin Media is a joke for over 18 months without fixed. I stick with ethernet cable from superhub to pc for now.

The dam upload has been the most difficult part , dunno why, tried many different methods of coding it and a couple of languages to code it in but it still has some problems for some people. However there's a few things that can be tinkered with by the user and once they find what works for them it does a reasonable job of monitoring for service problems. |
