TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

Anyone else get this? Apparently some exciting new features are coming. Apart from reminders, what other features could these be?

Please let it have something to do with the mythical Ipad app. :D

RB2004 11-08-2012 22:38

I'm looking forward to this update as well :) miss reminders lol.

Sometimes I'm watching a program and end up missing another.

No idea on the other new things, wish they would sort out streaming.. They enabled it all and spent time getting it working but with the missing rights to use it it's just useless and sat there doing nothing.

Would be good if they would do that, mines already plugged into a network cable :)

Also release the TiVo app.. It's ready but they are withholding it :(

Mine has given me a second message this morning saying that it has started.

Does this mean that the update is starting or the updating period has started?

You will be able to set your own recording defaults.

It won't start until the Olympics have finished and will be done in the early hours. So the earliest that it could start, is around 2am on the 13th.

Interesting to see on channel 100 that they are advertising that you can search on the Spotify app. As this is not possible at the moment perhaps it will be added to Spotify in the update?

It's the same advert from when Spotify launched on Tivo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXIQO3B5s3k

There is but sometimes I don't want to record the program or I'm already recording several program's.

Will look for source again but it's well known app has been ready for months.

Vm withheld it because they said it was an issue that you need to connect a network cable to the box as they felt it would be a limiting factor for most customers so they wanted to look at some form of alternative fix, so they are withholding the app. Likely been ready since end of last year.

The implememtation of reminders records the 'reminded' show as well as reminding you about it

You only have 3 tuners, so if you are recording 3 shows already, then you have to choose between one of those and the show you wanted to watch via a reminder anyway.

Given that that's the very reason for having a DVR it's not really a valid excuse :)

In which case you wouldn't be able to "watch" it anyway as that still needs an available tuner.

There'll be lots of rights issues to clear up before that can happen.

Oh, dear, that'll be the next complaint: 'I didn't want to record it, I just wanted a reminder!'

There should be an option like 'You have set a reminder for this programme. Do you want it recorded as well?'

Except that in a situation where you have three recordings going already then whether a "reminder" records it as well or not is a moot point as it would have to stop recording something to change channels anyway.

How about them making an update so it works as fast as Sky's software has for the last 8 years or so, I've been with Virgin and NTL before and cambridge cable before that for years and love the service (most of the time) but the tv box software has never been to the standard of Sky's,

this really showed up in the red buttong olympics coverage, the first week i was away and using Sky and it was fast and lovely to use but the second week i was back home and using the service on Tivo was dire, i had to restart the box a few times when trying to access a sport as it just locked up, and when it did work it was painfully slow to get to it ( yes i was aware thst the channels were available seperate from 501 onwards)

For the first time ever Bristol seems to be at the head of the queue!

My box obviously updated overnight and the remind and record option was showing when I set a series record for later tonight. Have had no time to see what else may have changed.

However when I have a couple of hours to spare I shall be on the phone to retentions to try to cancel or at least find out when my contract expires and how much to buy out. I watch a lot on Sky Sports (all 4 channels) and the latest price rise is a bridge too far - and to add insult to injury as a favoured customer I have a tickle to let me watch VOD movies on a service I have absolutely no interest in!

Hopefully I can negotiate a decent deal to revert my TV back to Sky! I only wish BT would sort out my exchange so I had an option for broadband.

Reminder funtion would be better if it gave you the choice just to autotune rather that autotune and record. In saying that just glad it's here. Let's u get on with stuff safe in the knowledge that it will turn over at the start of the football and you wont miss the start.

Well done Virgin, fix my interenet and all will be well. :)

I believe due to the way that TiVo functions the remind and record option was the only way reminders could be implemented.

The V+HD boxes have a dedicated live tuner so there was always a way to watch what you've set the reminder for

Because TiVo uses all tuners for recording, having it set a recording as well as the reminder guarantees that you'll be able to watch what you want reminding about - matching the way it works on the V+ HD box.

montehampster 14-08-2012 10:18

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

Agreed only about £5 per month cheaper except of course the 4 Sports Channels plus Sky Sports News will be in HD (I already dropped the Virgin £7 charge for two channels with the April increase), plus the extra channels etc. Two price increases in less than 6 months is taking the proverbial in my opinion. It seems Virgin IMHO have their priorities all wrong. Reminders are pointless with three recording tuners - a dynamic EPG is essential.

Which kinda makes the actual "remind" function pointless. Just start watching the recording when you're ready :)

However, it depends on ease of implementation

Adding a pop up to a planned recording is a reasonably small extension to existing functionality

As I understand it a Dynamic EPG would be a complete change to the core way of how TiVo gets EPG updates.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible, but it makes sense to set your priority in order of how easy it is to do.

That sums up Virgin's attitude to customer service. Implement what is easiest/best for Virgin not want their paying customers want and need. Pointless having a reminder or a recording set if the programme starts late or moves channel because of sports or other over run. Can't believe how many times recently the EPG has been wrong. Even a Tivo "suggestion" recorded the wrong programme because the Olympic coverage over ran.

Might be my imagination, but just had a techy round to sort out poor signal issue with the Tivo and it seems to boot a bit quicker with the 15.3 update. Just timed it and from starting a reboot in the reset menu is a snid under 3 mins, and there's also a new 'start-up' screen whilst it's booting.

Cheers

You obviously haven't been following the reminder debate, or you would know that is completely untrue. VM added reminders because customers asked for them.

Tivo as originally implemented didn't have reminders because the people at Tivo couldn't see a use for them because it has 3 recordable tuners. Some VM customers agreed with Tivo and some wanted reminders added. VM added reminders, so you can't say they don't listen to customers.

That's a bit harsh , since the arrival of VM TIVO customers have gained access to Remote record , recording on all three tuners , greater storage , connected facilities (YT etc) , many more advanced PVR functions plus future features like multiroom streaming , iPad app.

Apparently, reminders is something that VM's customers have purposefully asked for and (regardless of my opinion of the feature) I am happy that VM have listened and implemented the requested feature.

So yes, I suppose that is typical of VM; but not the in the way you suggest :)

It also sounds like implementing DEPG might be a lot more complicated and therefore may take a while longer but I'm sure they're still looking into it.

"Hardly ever" in my experience; but then I don't record much from the terrestrial channels that are more likely to have live events like sport.

As it was only a 'suggestion' you have missed nothing so it's a moot point anyway :)

A non dynamic EPG works fine for me, so I'm personally not bothered by the lack of one. Dynamic EPG's can bring their own problems, so if they do add one, there had better be a way to optionally switch it off (there was a rumour that it had been posted on the VM Tivo forums that if Tivo did get a DEPG, that there would be no option to turn it off.)

And they did respond to customers complaints on lack of global padding. VM didn't get it right on the first attempt, but have fixed it in this update and added even more recording options adjustments than just padding (according to those who have had it).

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

No change to the default settings of 1 minute before and 4 minutes after for recordings, which means I'll have to continue changing it to my preferred 5 and 10.

I don't know if this has always been the case, but when I tried changing the start recording time, for each minute I added to the recording start, it deleted a minute from the recording end.

What sodding use is that????

Just to point out that it'll only apply to new series links set up after you change it. Any existing ones will stay as they are

As I understand it a Dynamic EPG would be a complete change to the core way of how TiVo gets EPG updates.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible, but it makes sense to set your priority in order of how easy it is to do.

As I understand it (and this may be wrong as I am basing it on my mucking around on a hacked Series 1), it would be a massive change to the way that the Tivo (and not just Tivo on VM) software operates. As such, even assuming that VM did want to offer it, they would still need to be in a position to persude Tivo it's a good idea. Tivo may be unwilling as their software operates boxes for a *lot* of companies, all of whom would be affected it.

Even if it does happen, it's not going to happen quickly.

Personally, reminders don't bother me. I've only ever used them to find out how they work. Never set one up to remind me to watch a program..

Well, you certainly won't have that problem with sky, after all they cant even offer suggestions:rolleyes: I don't know much about dynamic EPG, but I know my parents, who have sky+HD, moaned just the other day about a program they wanted to record, did not record because the previous program over ran:erm::rolleyes: Lost count when I was on sky of the amount programs that did not record because I lost the signal (thanks to that pesky wind and rain) no dynamic epg will save that:rolleyes:
Besides after I lost the ending of a film I was desperate to see years ago, I learned very quickly to recored the next 2-3 programs (depending on length) after any live events or delays that happened during the day.

How can any company ever deliver what customers want/need because no-one wants/needs the same thing (tbh, there are more people wanting reminders than not) Okay, its not ideal, but I am happy to have it back.

That's what I was talking about. If I add a minute to the Start Recording, it subtracts a minute from the Stop Recording.

Same with adding to Stop Recording.

Useless.

There must be a falt somewhere; no way would VM implement that. Have you tried a box reboot?

Got the update upon waking up this morning. Quite weird how the Recording Defaults can't be set to exceed 5 mins, eg. you can't have 2 mins before and 5 mins after, the most I can have is 2 mins before and 3 mins after. Bit strange, but a well needed feature.

LOL!!!! Passingbat and Carl, nope I do not have concrete evidence, how on earth would I be able to provide that?! Perhaps I will e-mail Virgin and have them send out all their comments so I sift through them.
I was foolish enough to base that statement what I had read on these pages, and the various comments on the virginmedia community forums.
Clearly VM can remove reminders from all those who have v+ as they are all sitting at home scratching their heads wondering why they need such pointless technology and will be happy to lose reminders, seeing as most people clearly don't want them!
Either of you care to prove how VM are pandering to the few (who may of wanted reminders) and ignoring the masses (who clearly don't)?

Having reminders will not affect my Tivo usage in any shape or form, so you are right in one aspect. But given that Tivo has 3 recordable tuners, some people felt that there was no need for them and the time and resources spent on adding reminders could have been better spent elsewhere on other Tivo improovments. But we now have reminders and I'm pleased for the people who wanted them.

That's probably because not all broadcasters use this facility , I've seen it in action on the Sky channels , BBC and ITV so it's far from perfect and reliant on the broadcaster sending the update through.

Passingbat, cheers, no problem with your point of view at all. Think most people want reminders for sport so you don't miss the start of a game. You can get on with other stuff and rely on tv turning over for the match. People in the main want to see a game live. Strange I know but think it's true.

Thinking about it more, these are just the 'defaults' and look as if they reflect the +1 and +4 that were previously there, but you can now spread the 5 minutes how you like. You will still be able to go in and change them for a specific recording or series link. It does seem strange that they didn't give a larger time choice though. Personally my defaults will be going to zero, so not a problem for me, but I did see a post by someone who likes +5 and +10, and you have to wonder why such a setting isn't an option.

I've not had the update, but from the two posts on here, it's looking that way.

Presumably, you can add the 15 minute overrun for a specific recording or series link, but not as a global default.

Actually it can provide, but you have to do it manually each time you set up a recording or series link.

So - if it can be done manually, why not by default?

Doesn't make sense.

Nope, you never said they were, you just implied they were when you questioned my really rather harmless statement.

Well considering how the BBC fecked up there coverage of the challenge cup semi final AGAIN this year 5 minutes will not be enough to cover there mistake if they repeat it for the ruddy final.

You will still be able to add the 15 mins if you want to; just not as a default. Which, in my opinion, is fair enough as the only time you'd need that 15 mins is in extreme, and rare, circumstances where a live event over-runs.

So no, not a mistake at all

Sooooooo... Had the update.

Reminders are there but you have to record as well, never been too bothered with reminders but will prob use now its there. Very happy that recording presets are BACK!

But.... And there just had to be one.... I find it really bizarre that the maximum preset padding is five minutes in total. Try setting to it five before and five after and you can't, or maybe just ten after and you'll find there is no option for this. Although, I probably should have anticipated something like that, you know, something just silly.

Why not just have the 'Options' screen back like it was to start with that way you could use all the padding options available. Why? Tell me?

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I just don't understand why they'd do that you know. I know things sometimes don't go right but it almost seems as this is taking the p*ss a bit. You know, like VM
think: ok they want the presets back and we took the away because we thought they're no good. So we'll give them back to shut them up, but we'll put a little present in there just to take the shine of off it a bit for them.

I'm trying to think of a nicer explanation for it.

andy_m 15-08-2012 06:59

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

Whilst I think some of these implementations-only allowing a maximum of minutes padding, not being able to change the keep until setting-are clearly silly, I do think people should be prepared to try living with the current defaults for a while. If you've tried them and they don't work for you then fine, but if you haven't then try only setting express series links for a while. I genuinely think you'll be surprised at how clever TiVo is-for me the way it manages itself is it's best feature. I really think Virgin would have been better spending it's time and money educating it's customers on how best to use it's flagship product rather than develop add ons that were'nt in the original coding for over 10 years for a reason.

They'll certainly be no more use to me than they are now as I wanted to change the defaults to -1/+1 as that's all I usually need. (In fact, 0/+1 would be even better!) :(

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

"keep until space needed" is just crazy, why do VM make things hard here as hardly anybody would want that type of approach. Much prefer it to be Tivo says its cannot record when no space is left so vast majority of users would want the default to be "until I decide to delete" (or whatever Tivo says as the option, not near my box right now to check). Tivo already alerts you when it does not have enough space, I've reached that limit once alreday. Don't like the idea Tivo can delete items by itself without me being aware, it should be my decision. Feel another "feature tweak" is required!

spiderplant 15-08-2012 08:54

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

The problem with "keep until I delete" is it reserves space for all the planned recordings. I saw an extreme example recently where the user had about 60 series links, mostly daily programmes like Jeremy Kyle and Bargain Hunt, all set to KUID. The TiVo was refusing to accept any more recordings even though the drive was only 37% full.

Use KUID for the things that really matter, and let TiVo manage the space for everything else.

With the greatest of respect, I've been using PVRs of one kind or another for a lot of years now and Tivo for well over a year and I know how to get the best out of it for me, and that is not by using the current defaults.

Nothing personal Spiderplant, but every recording I have set on Tivo since I got it has neen set with Keep until I delete. And I record a lot on Tivo. I have never had a problem.

Why limit user choice? Are VM treating all their customers as incompetent idiots? It appears that way to me given how the recording defaults have been implemented. VM messed up the first implementation of recording padding defaults; they had a chance to shine on their second go, and have messed it up again. I'm really annoyed with VM on this one, because for me, Express Series link remains completely useless.

99% of my recordings are set to that. With >50% space available and only me in the house I don't need to set anything to KUID as my Tivo has not auto-deleted anything, ever since I got it.

Tivo already alerts you when it does not have enough space, I've reached that limit once alreday. Don't like the idea Tivo can delete items by itself without me being aware, it should be my decision. Feel another "feature tweak" is required!

Spot on!

No.

I'm really annoyed with VM on this one, because for me, Express Series link remains completely useless.
Wow! Hyperbole much?

No.

Given that you can't changbe the Keep until option, they are limiting choice

And given that I don't use some of the defaults that are unchangeable in Express Series link, so don't use it, then in my book, it's completely useless

The clue is in the word 'use'.
