Is Super Hub not so Super?

I have a 50MB connection with a Super Hub modem/Router. I only recently got myself a Tablet and tried connecting up in my bedroom but got no single. I find this strange as I get a perfectly good signal in my lounge immediately below my bedroom (using the same tablet). I find this very frustrating as the distance can't be more than 20/30 feet.

Isn't this what a router is designed to do?

A decent wireless router is designed to do what you want. But the SH is a wretched piece of router junk. It has two postage stamp sized plates in exactly the wrong place facing the wrong way in a most beautifully crafted useless box. Tis thing will never do what you need for wireless (although it might for others who are in the same room as this thing).

Modem mode and your own wireless router is the only answer. But think about the router you buy and read up on its wireless legs. For an upstairs/downstairs thing, there are variables. A router with an external antenna pair/trio would to a better job than one with internal antennae.

Hope that helps.

Wireless performance depends on what is between you and the hub, for example walls and ceilings, depending on thickness can affect performance.

Not related to the OP but can we close this thread now because the nay sayers have had their say, with a few notable exceptions and it will just turn into another 'the superhub is crap, no it isn't debate'

Yeah, the orientation of this thing is critical, just a few cm one way or the other can make all the difference. Even standing a reflective surface at right angles to the end where the lights are can increase coverage. Not distance. I like ****ing about like that. A leftover from my RHam days when you had to sort your own problems.
Or as the man says get a decent router and put the junk into modem mode.

I kinda like the idea of the single box rather than a separate modem + a separate router. I also thought I probably was tied into the VM offering. Is there an alternative I can but then? and more importantly is it easy for a non techy to setup?;)

You've no choice, it's the Shub plus router or just the Shub.

I can't disagree with what you say. But VM don't allow/offer a higher end Gateway (Motorola for example). The SH is what you must eat and that's it.

VM have been asked for the past 1½ years to provide a paid-for decent alternative but there has been no rresponse from them on that as yet.

A shame - because their broadband offering is otherwise very good IMO.

[SEPH]: The thread is young and it poses a valid question.

Why would you want to suppress this truth?

@Seph

No conspiracy here :D

It's just tedious when the same thing is in every thread about the Superhub, I appreciate that some think it's crap and others don't, it would just be nice for a change for the 'advice' which is generally good on here, to be given without starting 'another' the Superhub is crap no it isn't discussion.

The personal disagreements seem to get in the way of the point being discussed which is a shame.

It is really simple Yank, you just need to select modem mode in the Super Hub settings and connect your existing router. For assistance check out this link - http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...MER_TYPE=Cable

Hope you sort it, Superblade7

well bearing in mind the shub has "unbeatable wireless performance" I would say the op is pretty screwed then as he clearly is not going to be able to go out and buy another router which will provide a wireless signal upstrairs.

me too, I also like the thread title because I have used the same phrase many a time. Ignore what I was saying above, I was being sarcastic. The truth of the matter is that the shub is anything but super. Vmfriend loves to moan his ass off at me for threads like this because I am spreading bias and negativity. I love them though because they keep popping up and time and time again re-enforcing the fact that the shub is pants and doesnt work for anywhere near the number of customers it should (see how I refrained for claiming it doesnt work full stop :). As Seph has said above, you'll be doing yourself a huge favour buying your own router. I personally am a Linksys fan for the simple fact that they are rock solid, reliable and you just plug them in and they work perfectly.

I have a VM Shub setup in modem mode connected to one of these. http://www.apple.com/uk/timecapsule/wireless.html
Its a bit on the expensive side but it makes auto backups and has good wifi range. Being Apple its fit and forget, it just works. You can also get a Airport Express to extend your network and plug external speakers or a USB devise.

From the apple web site: Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch and devices using 802.11b/g. Others can use either 2.4GHz or the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Mac computers, iPad and Apple TV. Instead of choosing one of the bands, Time Capsule operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multi-band devices automatically use the best available band.

Just a thought it should be renamed the Rubbish Hub. I have been round a friends house who can't connect via WiFi downstairs so can't use his iPhone or iPad while sitting downstairs. He called me after having three VM engineers call to try and sort the problem, the last engineer had a real corker of a reason why he has crap WiFi "Its due to your next doors neighbours hub it is swamping yours" He then changed the channel from auto and left. leaving my friend with rubbish WiFi.

There are many many factors that could be causing the wifi issues. I have 7 other Superhubs in range of mine and have no problems with my signal, even through 2 really thick Glasgow tenement brick walls.

Even things like energy saving lightbulbs can affect wireless performance.

My Friend has a house either side of him one has a BT Hub and the other side they have an Apple Time Capsule. My friend lives in a 5 Bedroomed Barrett box and sitting just under the hub you get one bar to nothing on the iPhone and when you look at other networks both the Apple and the BT Hub are near full strength on the iPhone. If he wants to use the WiFi he has to go upstairs and sit in the room with the SH. As a stand alone unit it is not fit for purpose. IMHO

Ok I hear what you say but VM have sent round three engineers which is costing time and money and no doubt my friend will be calling them out again when he gets back from holiday telling them its not fit for purpose.

Aside from sending an engineer round have they replaced the Superhub at all? For him to get nothing in the room directly below, suggests to me there is a fault with the SH wireless.

No its the same one but the second engineer spent quite some time changing the channels and noted it was being swamped by next door. The third engineer confirmed what the last one found.

I am going to try and talk him into getting a time capsule or airport express or he's going to BT as that works fine.

It's interference from proper routers that swamps the superhub. Having 7 superhubs in range won't make any difference unless they are all in the same room. :D

Maybe the wrong thread, or perhaps I should have started another one, but ......
Reading over on Virgin Community Forums and the number of times VM are sending out replacement SH's is outrageous. I mean not just one, some posters are on number 3 and 4!!
They also seem to send out complete SH kits, when all some people want is a replacement PSU!?!?!?
Really makes you wonder what this is costing VM in real money terms. They should have canned this a long time ago :)

PSU's are not supplied separately and never have been for any modem so you get a complete package including modem, it is probably cheaper than ordering separate PSU's as you would need a large quantity of different types in order to keep up with demand.

Consider VM only have the one CPE which they are currently issuing and swap out modems for it whenever they go wrong I can't see why they don't stock superhub PSUs. The number of installers that leave the old ones in requiring later replacement plus the number that annoy people with a high pitched whistle means there must be many otherwise serviceable Superhubs in landfill because VM ship out hubs and psus when only a psu is needed.

No, the psu comes separately, it's virgin folk in the big red shed who put a hub and a psu in one box and send it out. I have to order psus separately and they come into the depot separately. If they came in the same box everyone would have the correct psu.

The has never been an option to order them separately though so regardless of them coming separately no agent can send a PSU out.

exactly. If they want to flipping cut costs they should stop sending shubs out unneccessarily and all the money they save from that they could re0invest in buying proper routers because they would only need to send them out when someone actually needs one.

It's a false economy, they may be saving £5 a hub over a better Cisco model but the replacements, loyalty discounts, wasted engineer visits and folk leaving they'd be in a better financial position to have gone with a decent model, also the reputation would be better.

General Maximus 22-08-2012 11:37

Re: Is Super Hub not so Super?

you have hit the nail on the head; their whole operation is too costly and inefficient. They need someone to go in and completely re-do it. If they offered better quality cpe they would have less than half the number of calls and faults that they have now and they wouldnt need to throw shubs around like confetti.

I volunteer, mon General. And what's more, I could do it. My plan would include:

1. Immediately trial a vanilla DOCSIS 3 cable modem with a view to introducing it

2. Immediately trial a high reputation DOCSIS 3 Gateway with a view to making it a paid-for option

3. Put a drop dead deadline on getting the SH firmware right in stability terms (wireless will never be brilliant - but if they get the firmware right it's a get-you-going device)

4. I'd lobby the VM bosses for keeping it all vanilla - no more vain branding -no more "sylish" uselessisms.

That's a start at least. Won't happen nor anything like it.

As the are still millions of standard modems on the network it would be false economy to stock PSU's for each model as it would still be cheaper to send out a Superhub also when sent out from Kuene and Nagel they are in one box so a bit odd that the ones sent to the Red Sheds are separate.

Nobody I've seen suggests VM do that. If a modem goes wrong these days they ship out a Superhub so there is only a need to separately list the PSUs for them on the system - plus I've only seen complaints on the VM forum and here about Superhub PSUs - and plenty of them too.

You only would stock netgear PSUs, all other PSUs would just be replaced with a Superhub

So the would be little in the way of savings then as that would cost millions to instigate replacing 3 million standard modems.

It would probably still be cheaper to replace as a complete unit due to cost anyway even if they replaced every single Docsis 1 modem.

Kwikkie, you mustn't call Peter obtuse. That's reserved for ....

Peter's intervention has shown that:

1/
If your SH is buggered but not the PSU, you'll be sent a SH + PSU

2/
If your SH is not buggered but the PSU is, you'll be sent a SH + PSU

Nobody has properly addreessed the case of the engineer leaving the wrong PSU on the system in the first place.

But don't call Peter "obtuse"!!

The forum sorts out the engineer leaving the old PSU by..

having a Superhub+PSU sent out.

I imagine the phone support do the same once they've had the user reboot it 10 times, clear browser cache 13 times, and reinstall windows twice and by chance you find somebody with more than two functional brain cells

As you haven't replied to any of my earlier responses on this I suspect you must have reciprocated my ignore of you which I removed a while back when some quotes of your comments suggested your posts may be worth reading again. Obviously I was wrong in that...

I am not sure that you have actually understood my stance on this issue, it is usually the engineers who do not replace the PSU when fitting a Superhub for which they should get royally roasted for not following process.

All Superhubs sitting on Kuene and Nagels shelves come complete in one box with both the device and PSU included.

Now with regards the millions of standard modems still under customers desks what point would the be in stocking PSU's for those devices as it has never been done before so every single standard modem would have to be replaced by a Superhub which will cost say £10, 000,000 and each one would have a PSU included.

Now why would a company stock Superhubs with PSU's and then have a separate stock of PSU's in case they need to replace some, it makes economic sense to just stock a single item and send it out when required to cut costs down.

Now apart from the above the should admit to the failings of both of the present turkeys on their books namely the VMNG300 and the Superhub and with their tail firmly between their legs should look to someone like Motorola to supply all new Docsis 3 modems.

Next rather than making an assumption re read or ask a question as it makes sense.

The has never been an option to send a PSU and it would not make financial sense to split them as in doing so you would incur more costs which someone would have to pay and that would be the customer.

Be it superhubs, tivos, vhds, v+, the psu, remotes, smart cards, hdmi leads and dongles are all separate. Someone physically has to pick a superhub and a psu and pit it in a box, Hense some folk getting a superhub with no psu at all on QuickStart.

Peter
Who mentioned stocking psus for legacy modems?

When the superhubs make a stupid buzzing noise it makes perfectly good sense to stock spare psus.

Can you explain the ongoing slating of the vmng300 which since I've worked for vm have been flawless.

Again they are already split, it they weren't split then customer would have the psu that came with the hub

As for the VMNG300 we had more calls with issues with that device than the Superhub as it was more prone to drop off line.

Also little point in stocking standalone PSU's when for cost effectiveness you can just stock the Superhub complete with PSU in one package as per the stock at Kuene and Nagel why increase storage and picking stocks for no valid reason.

As you have never worked for the company how can you make invalid assumptions when my posts are based in actual fact do for once get your assumptions based in reality.

As for Red Sheds stocking the Superhub as 2 separate packages as per jb66 posts above, that is a stupid situation as all stock sent out from central warehousing is boxed as a complete unit, do explain how that could be an assumption, remember who worked as a technical support agent and actually did send these devices out before making a further comment as my experience is based around facts and the systems in use.

I don't need to have worked for VM to see that you have converted what seems a perfectly reasonable suggestion that Superhub PSUs be listed as a separate inventory item which can be shipped to replace faulty ones and ones not replaced during the install into the need to carry PSUs for every modem since the dawn of time and/or replacement of every modem still in service - which will happen anyway over time.

I suspect the true reason they are not carried as separate items is because VM don't trust their front line staff to be able to correctly identify a duff PSU. Judging by some of your posts here where you have gone off on a tangent because you haven't read what was actually posted they may well have a point.

What more proof do we need than the post above that clearly shows little or no understanding of logistics, you do not stock itens that are not needed otherwise you are not working cost effectively, if you split the packs up the warehouse would have to charge for more space and extra time picking the order. Then Netgear would have to split the content, it all costs money and would be a stupid road to go down as the customer would have to foot the bill for the extra cost, I know more about the Virgin Media systems than you ever would but because you have lost the argument you post negative remarks about me, well done now put me back ignore before you lose again.

Re: Is Super Hub not so Super?

VM already stock the PSUs separately or at least did when I had my 50Mbps install 2 years back. The boxes carried on the van - and I saw 3 of them because the first two hubs failed to work - contained hubs only and the PSU was in a different box. I've seen two boxes sent out to me from support and they do contain the PSU plus other stuff - they are completely different boxes.

True you don't stock items that are not required such as PSUs for every obsolete modem in service which you kept insisting on but separate SH PSUs clearly would save money as countless hubs are going to landfull because they either never had the correct PSU at install time or the one they did have needs replacing because it whistles. I'll grant that a failed PSU can't easily be diagnosed over the phone and it's cheaper to ship a SH+PSU than send an engineer.

That's interesting. I must have a good one then, but I'll keep an eye on the uptime if and when I have to reboot it. :)

Generally it's only power outages etc that would cause me to power cycle the modem.
From memory the uptime at the moment is around about 150 days.

JB66 has already confirmed for some strange reason that the Red Sheds get theirs separate which does not make economic sense as that must be costing more as all devices sent come complete, someone has not done their sums right because if they were sent out from the warehouse with no PSU the would be hell to pay, no engineers carry the stock they require which is very different to an order picker collating an order.

From day one we had calls about the device and I was on the original ring fenced 50Mb team, your eyes rolled when you saw 50Mb on the phone turret as you knew it was going to be a fun call.

I am talking about the ones sent out from central warehousing complete with a PSU, if they were separate then either the agent or the order picker would forget and make customers angry plus the costs involved would rule out such an idea as storage and orderpicking is not free so sending out a complete unit will still be cheaper.
