Free PictureBox.....wow

As above, just got an e-mail about getting this service for the month of August for free, it came as a "tickle" for being a good customer, lol, i'd rather they gave me a discount than this garbage, there's only one or two movies that came out last year, and most in the 2000s, in fact there's nothing of interest to me really, but they may suit others.

Just goes to show, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Isn't a free month of Picture Box for everybody?
We just had a notice pop up on the TV to say we've got a free month

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

yes we got a notice pop up as well, might give it a quick look but would not pay for it

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

Really is churlish to complain about getting free stuff, however some of the films are as old as Carl ;) Wouldn't pay a quid subscription for these tired old movies let alone 5.

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

Some of my favourite movies are "old" movies, the age of a movie bares no reflection on its quality.

I would say use this free month go watch some OLD movies you'll probably find a couple you really enjoy.

Yeah of course :erm: especially when the "free stuff" should be exactly that!

There are probably more interesting movies on FTA tv than there are on PB.

And to think it's owned by NBC Universal

I used to subscribe to PB. Before we all got Sky Anytime Movies. After 6 months you pretty much seen em all and then they repeat em again.

The selection just confirms why I have never subscribed to PB
Sky Anytime is a hundred times better and free

I suppose PictureBox offers something to those who don't have SKY Movies / SKY Movies on demand via SKY Anytime.

Still think there is better films on terrestrial TV. As posted elsewhere, if you have TiVo and set up wishlists for specific movies types you'll quickly have a better selection of movies stored on your box to watch when you want without paying an extra penny over your current subscription.

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

There are a couple of films on there I might take a look at. Not bothered if I miss them though.

Reason i won't ever be subscribing to Picture Box after having a look at the available selection:-
Only 1 Film listed as being in HD

Good job we're not all HD snobs then, isn't it?!

If you subscribed you'd get a lot more HD. Currently there are 17 in HD.

This doesn't stack up with the letter I got via email:

Quote:

We're giving you access to the PictureBox service at no extra cost. No strings, no hidden catches, just 60 films from old favourites to recent blockbusters, all ready on your telly right now. That'd usually be £5 per month. You can watch them from 1st - 31st August as a free trial and the majority are in HD.

It’s a Virgin Media tickle

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

Had a look last night, and thought yuck when I saw most of the titles. If that is what you get when you pay a monthly fee then I am shocked the channel is still running.

I gave it a go for a month when it first launched, and even worse, there is no 5.1 audio.

As with many so called HD snobs probably unable to tell the difference unless listed as HD.

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

That's a little un-fair :( Even with my not-perfect eyesight, I can tell the difference between HD and SD.

My point was that, although - given the option - I would choose to watch the HD version of something over the SD version I wouldn't not watch something just because it wan't in HD.

If you see what I mean! (Don'tcha just hate double-negatives ;))

I would suggest if people can't see the difference between SD and HD they either have a small set , bad eyesight or the original material is of poor quality. Football for me is a must in HD and the difference is night and day , Hawaii Five O is another example of excellent quality HD granted not as good as Blu Ray standard but impressive. I agree with Carl though I wouldn't not watch something just because it wasn't HD , I enjoy some of the news/documentaries on PBS America which is generally poor quality SD in my opinion.

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

If you feel that you cannot watch a programme or movie simply because it is not in HD then somewhere the is something very odd in your makeup because it would never stop me watching an old classic movie which is Picturebox mainstay if you think otherwise then that is pure snobbery and you will miss many a great movie.

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

i think most of us are missing the point of the free month its a teaser to show wot were missing.
to some of us the films on offer are pants to others there good but its only a marketing ploy PB have gave a free month for everyone to view there not expecting everyone to sign up
but say 20 in every 1000 potential new customers is all they need to give a lil boost in profits.
It's just the same as all the junk mail we get through the letter box.

What a con! I got the same e mail but when I tried to access the Picture Box service I got the message that I was not subscribed - phoned VM who informed me that the service was for L & XL packages only! Why send me an email telling me about the free month if I'm not eligible?

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

That is staggeringly bad.

carlwaring 08-08-2012 14:47

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

Possibly because everyone's got it and it wasn't just 'a tickle' for selected people?

andy_m 08-08-2012 14:52

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

Its not a tickle, but I don't think its for everyone either. You can't send out an email saying something is available and then another when you realise your mistake-thats really bad.

The cynic in me is thinking that perhaps Virgin don't mind taking the opportunity to point out to lower tier customers what they're missing out on...

thenry 08-08-2012 14:57

Re: Free PictureBox.....wow

tell you the truth its not really bothered me. I got the apology email from VM about being boosted to 120meg before i got the email stating that I would get 120meg :dozey:

True, but unfortunately there is precedent with VM for this :(
