What settings are best for R36?

Obviously before, you could not run 300mbps and ip flood etc. So out of the following, what should I enable?

  1. OBSS - WTF is this lol?
  2. IP Flood
  3. Port Scan Detection
  4. IPSec Pass-Through
  5. PPTP Pass-Through
  6. Multicast Pass-Through
Also, what do all of these actually do in plain english?

Re: What settings are best for R36?

keep OBSS disabled it kills wireless speeds, its a known bug

best disabling IP flood as well

AndyCalling 13-07-2012 21:16

Re: What settings are best for R36?

It seems, OBSS off and Greenfield mode off as well. Two bugs.

Keep that firewall disabled. Forever. Even if that feature was working perfectly, it should still be off as it is useless and can only restrict you. All of the firewall settings should be unselectable if the firewall is disabled with the initial, master tick box on the menu.

Re: What settings are best for R36?

disabling the firewall isnt a good idea in my opinion. firewall set as low and ip flood enabled should be fine. ive tested using clean systems no problems.

others have had issues with firewall set as low, i blame their setup causing problems not the SH.

firewall set to anything above low will block messenger etc.

AndyCalling 13-07-2012 21:52

Re: What settings are best for R36?

What are you hoping to achieve by setting your firewall to low Thenry? What is it going to be stopping exactly?

If there's some new bit of gubbinry in the firewall code that makes it potentially useful for stopping something then I might reconsider. It would make the Shub the first router I've ever seen with a worth while firewall.

Re: What settings are best for R36?

Ah, I see. Well OP, there is another school of thought from Thenry there, clearly. I would still keep it turned off. It takes all sorts I suppose.

But if you do keep it switched on, and something you do over the net one day gets an intermittent drop problem, or some other weirdness occurs, remember to turn off the firewall and test to see if that's what's clamping down on you.

(Psst, turn it off, it's rubbish! But don't tell Thenry I said so...) :)~

Thanks guys, not disabling the firewall because as stated something is better than nothing and it is not causing me issues. Other than that I have disabled greenfield and OBSS.

What do 4,5 and 6 actually do?

5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pptp

6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast

forwards the above ;)

Re: What settings are best for R36?

Disable 1, 2 and 3. 4, 5 and 6 wont really affect you i would have thought. They tell the router how to handle encrypted traffic like VPNs. IPSec, is IPSecurity, PPTP is Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol and Multicast Addresses are special addresses which peeps use if for example you wanted to stream a video to a selected group of people. You don't need to worry about them and I doubt you'll ever use them.

I know I am going to shoot myself in the foot by saying this but you shouldn't have any problems leaving them on (don't embarrass me shub)

I hadn't bothered and had left it at the default low with no restrictions and all the pass-throughs checked but now you mention it I think you're quite right - SPI on top of NAT for a home router is probably overkill and could lead to more problems than it prevents.

It caused me no problems having it on that I'm aware of but turning it off will (or at least should if the option works) stop at least some of the superhub code from running and given its track record that's probably no bad thing.

If you're gonna have a hardware firewall, don't have it running in the wretched SH. Use modem mode, get a decent router with a well reviewed firewall and use that.

I appreciate that some users can't deploy a firewall in all their end user devices. If they can, (like McAfee, etc), then do that have firewall switched off in front end equipment.

or setup a IDPS system using Linux/Snort in between the SH (if running in modem only mode) and your LAN and sniff all packets and drop anything suspicious.

Re: What settings are best for R36?

Yea, more complex solutions can be good but the usual home router offerings are nothing but rabbits feet. And then they go and gum up the works when you're least expecting it.

I just hang a horse shoe on the side of my PC tower and that covers everything. The perfect solution. :)~

Re: What settings are best for R36?

have you disable OBSS?
and what are your results?
e.g. like when you switch your coputer off and then on it again after few minutes does your wireless connect to the super hub or do you have to restart it..to connect it again?

because mine connects then i off the computer then on it again after few hours and it does not connect untill i restart my superhub? do you have that problem or is your perfect working order (flawless)?

can you help me with N adapter.
when i was on R30 i was getting 300Mbps
when the superhub upgraded to R36 Firmware my N adapter went to 130Mbps
i check on windows task manasger..networking.

i tryed untick OBSS and changed to 300Mbps on superhub setting.
but when i disable OBSS and click on 300Mbps. it connects but the next day it won't connect to the superhub
i have to restart my superhub to reconnect again

AndyCalling 16-07-2012 18:59

Re: What settings are best for R36?

I replied to your PM, Umbie. You need to think about what you want (5Ghz 300meg or 2.4Ghz 144meg) and then manually choose the best channel in your area. Running 300meg on 2.4Ghz in a crowded spectrum without OBSS is both rude to your neighbours and likely to give you issues as well.

truthspeaker 16-07-2012 20:23

Re: What settings are best for R36?

on super hub setting this is what i have done.
wireless mode
enable....OBSS is 300Mbps but running on for some reason 130Mbps (2.4GHz)
if i disable i get problems like i have to restart superhub every few hours to re-connect my computer.

I don't no how to disable ...greenfield mode? looks grey ed out...

security
disable ...firewall
disable IP Flood dectection
enable....pass through
enable...Port Scan Detection
enable...IPSec Pass-Through
enable...PPTP Pass-Through
enable...Multicast Pass-Through

WPS
i have disable WPS

change my superhub name..
gonna try change auto to manual channel 10 or 1

so to get 300Mbps i have to change to 5GHz. with OBSS disable?

---------- Post added at 21:17 ---------- Previous post was at 21:00 ----------

i can get 300Mbps on 2.4GHz with OBSS disable...why do i have to restart the hub everyday to reconnect my computer.

if i change to 5Ghz then my printer and mobile phone won't connect.
my printer is wireless.

---------- Post added at 21:23 ---------- Previous post was at 21:17 ----------

i used inSSIDer can only see mine..at channel 6
can't see my neighbours channel or people on my street.

last time i checked i saw only 1 neighbour channel at 6+10 so i don't really have that much channels coming from neighbours.

AndyCalling 16-07-2012 21:20

Re: What settings are best for R36?

You can get 300meg on 2.4Ghz, but it takes up a lot of spectrum (a resource you share with your neighbours) and so you shouldn't. You should save that for 5Ghz mode. That said, if there are no other networks near by at the moment then you shouldn't be having these problems.

Try a factory reset of your Shub? You'll have to put all the settings in again though.

I'm starting to wonder if it's an IP address DHCP type issue. Have you tried connecting other wifi things like a smart phone? Just to count out the laptop.

Still, it's probably the Shub that's acting up as changing the OBSS setting seems to fix it.

OBSS is bugged, which is why you only get 130meg with it enabled. It is a known bug.

You can get 300meg in 2.4Ghz mode with OBSS off but shouldn't, you should set it for 1.44meg if using 2.4Ghz mode. It will also give you better range this way.

You can get 300meg at 5Ghz mode with OBSS off without being a wifi hog as there's more space in that part of the spectrum.

With OBSS on? If it worked? Well, we'll see. If it works well then it could make 300meg on 2.4Ghz possible. I doubt it would be possible very often for most people though, as it would rarely get the chance to go into 300meg mode with all the overcrowding on the 2.4Ghz band.

truthspeaker 18-07-2012 19:31

Re: What settings are best for R36?

i found the problem i was on the wrong channel.
on inSSIDer i found more neighbours like 02 on channel 11, BT on channel 1, virgin on 6+10..
now i changed it to channel 10..working good only on 144Mbps
but find slow speed on 300Mbps and can't find a good channel to connect to.

so the problem is not OBSS sorry for disturbing you.
you was right about staying with 144Mb speed channels are more easy to find.

thank you for replying and taking your time to read and helping me.
thankz again

Re: What settings are best for R36?

Woah, hold on there. Channel 10 may be suitable in some unusual situations, but it is not usually the best channel to choose. You see, there is a lot of overlap on 2.4Ghz mode.

It goes like this:

We can use channels 1 to 13. The ideal channels to choose to minimize overlapping would be 1, 5, 9 or 13 then. Well, not really. The reason is that in the US they can only use channels 1 to 11. This gives a different ideal arrangement being 1, 6 or 11. Since manufacturers can only think in US terms, all routers I have ever seen default to one of these US ideal channels. If people set their routers to 'Auto' most of them only pick a US ideal channel whatever the situation (Belkin seem to be different in this regard). On top of this some client devices, notably laptops and netbooks using Broadcom or Intel wifi chipsets, won't connect to channels over 11 at all as they are fixed to US limits.

So, expect those around you to be making US style channel choices. That gives you 1, 6 and 11 as the best choices. If these channels are all being used by anything other than a distant trace of a far off neighbouring router and you can't find a clear one for yours then you will see an often big drop in performance at best, or loss of connection at worst (now you see why using 300Meg mode is being rude to your neighbours).

In a fully overcrowded situation you have easy 2 options (other options take a bit more DIY initiative or an aggressive attitude to your neighbours needs or both of the above). Firstly you could move to 5Ghz mode with a suitable adapter for your laptops. That may not be compatible with all devices such as mobile phones and wifi printers and the like though. Secondly, you could try to use channel 13. It overlaps with 11 a bit, but is likely to be unused by most people. Most devices seem to connect to it except netbooks/laptops with some (very common) chipsets. You could always buy adapters for those devices.

I think I have a solution to the Broadcom chipset issue by the way. I am going to get around to testing it out soon and when I do I'll post my findings and hopefully instructions here. Intel chipsets I can't help with as I don't have an intel wifi card to mess with.

Additional:

One further option is to find the neighbour who is using the Virgin connection on channels 6+10. They are using that because they are in 300Meg mode. You can then politely explain to them why they are being rude and ask them to stop it. You could even offer to show them how. If they don't agree then you can explain to them that if they want a fight you'll be making one or two parabolic transmitters at the full legal power limit which will be transmitting over the whole 2.4Ghz band 24/7 and that you will be pointing them at their house until they give in. Remember to duck.

Re: What settings are best for R36?

Probably better to just send deauth packets all the time to constantly disconnect their clients without needing to vomit all over the spectrum 24/7

I rebooted my super hub this morning to find R 36 . I thought I would give super hub a go to see how it now performed as it is designed. Unfortunately I found no increase in wi/fi range or speed. I have now put it back into modem mode and attached my router which is significantly quicker . Shame I thought they would have sorted these problems by now.

R6300 WiFi Router 802.11ac (over clocked) router Dual Band Gigabit will vomit on all spectrum channels? 2.4Ghz
if fast modem's slow down neighbours internet and disconnet problems. why do they make so fast modem router in the first place? just stick with N150 modem so it don't disturb neighbours...
why make Over clocked modem router so other neighbours can't find channels.
300meg on 2.4Ghz in a crowded spectrum
450meg on 2.4Ghz even more crowded
900meg on 2.4Ghz super crowded
1000meg overclocked modem no space on spectrum ?

AndyCalling 21-07-2012 22:01

Re: What settings are best for R36?

It is more complicated than that. It starts coming down to the number of spatial streams the router can support on a single channel, and then a double channel, and then there are 2.4/5Ghz combos. You might want to do a bit of reading up on the subject as the net's full of info on it.

qasdfdsaq 22-07-2012 00:55

Re: What settings are best for R36?

802.11ac is 5Ghz only doofus.

And for very good reason.

P.S. You don't need some "overclocked" 802.11ac router to spew crap over the 2.4Ghz band. A single 20Mhz g-only router spits out enough side-band interference to render the entire 80Mhz of spectrum unusable if done right. (P.S. This is another reason why microcells and Cisco's entire marketing strategy is a load of bull)
