I just went into the superhub (upgraded yesterday) and it says that we downloaded 20GB on the first day!!! I NEED to find out who is downloading! any ideas how i can monitor!

Any chance you can copy the letter and put it on here, Make sure you remove identifiable information. It seems strange they are going back to there old ways again ??

As for tracking your bandwidth it would be difficult as you need to install the software on each laptop, The superhub is not so super when it come to tracking usage.

20GB isn't really... that much, to be honest.

Think about it, the average HD bbc iPlayer program is 700mb to 1gb. Some software packages are more than 20GB...

In fact, I've already downloaded 32GB today according to the superhub, and thats mostly just from watching youtube streams and bbc iPlayer (yeah, it was a very slow day for me).

Also, I don't believe the counter on the superhub is hugely accurate.

Already done 150 gig this month in total so 20 gig by 7 users in one day is easily done.

BTW anyone who exceeds the limits set at certain times of the day will be STM'd.

if you had extend the allowance i guess they will cape the line automatic with out sending letter
Or they system is not updated even they have made new policy?(general question)
Can you call them make sure they have not make any mistake?

and regards your question usually will need to install to each pc a band-witch meter and most are free and keep monitor in their laptop or get a good router where have monitor band-witch or pay some spy software(but i dont trust them even if they expensive because they must spy our pc too)

OLD WAY's? I thought this was there policy for anyone who goes over there limit!? anyways I'll type the jist of it..

Dear Mr...

WANT A FASTER BROADBAND SERVICE IN THE EVENING? READ ON!

As you may know with Virgin Broadband we don't limit the amount that you can download. However, we've recently noticed an unusually large amount of data being transferred over your broadband connection (daily between mid-day and midnight) at our busiest network time and this may have resulted in your connection being managed under our traffic management policy.

then the letter goes on to giving me a few tips on managing my broadband performance...

1. move 'non time critical' usage to after midnight.
2. Make sure my PC's security is upto date & active.
3 Make sure my wifi is secure
4. Other members of your household eating up your connection.

they elaborate on the points above.

I have no idea how much download is too much so am worried that I might get another letter!..

I used to get letters like that all the time ,they are just advice letters to avoid traffic management ,ignore it or if you are bothered about being managed follow the advice

everyone is stm'd during certain hours of the day as soon as they download more than a few gb so what they are have said in the letter applies to everyone all the time, they arent going to be doing anything special to punish you. It cracks me up though when these letters come out because I never understand what the criteria are for being sent one. The people I see get them download hardly anything at all yet I can download 120gb a day and never get one (I am not saying I do now but i have done in the past)

No I don't think they've made a mistake we do use our broadband a lot. I didn't know that routers could monitor bandwidth I have a good router (Asus RT-N56U) so will check it out...

Thanks.

if you have a ddwrt router you can run a script that will monitor bandwidth usage per users and have a web page up refreshing the data every 10 seconds

I use to have ddwrt on my old D-Link 615 it was awesome! but I don't think they have it for my Asus router I think its because its Realtek not sure but I tried looking for the firmware on there database....

I think it is terrible that you on the 100MB connection and they are moaning that you are using it! Its the same with my 10mb connection the other day i was download a linux distro and full speed and then a hour in it slowed down and i was punished! I don't hardly ever max out the connection there traffic management is done in the wrong way, im looking at moving to a BT fiber service once its enabled in my area that really are unlimited and don't cap you for maxing out your connection once in a while, Im paying for a 10mb connection and then when i try to use it i only get a quarter of the speed

I had the same communique by email 2 days ago:

Dear Mr xxxxxx

Want a faster broadband service in the evening? Read on!

As you may know with Virgin Broadband we don't limit the amount that you can download. However, we've recently noticed an unusually large amount of data being transferred over your broadband connection (daily between mid-day and midnight) at our busiest network time and this may have resulted in your connection being managed under our traffic management policy (you can review this policy at virginmedia.com/traffic).

To help you better manage your broadband performance and to keep things running smoothly here are a few tips:

1. Move 'non time critical' usage to after midnight

Okay that might sound late, but actually it's easy to schedule downloading big files such as Movies until then. Check out our FAQs and details of how to schedule downloads on common software at virginmedia.com/peaktimefaq

2. Make sure your PC security software is up to date and active

Not having security software installed or up to date can really slow you down. Try using Virgin Media Security. It's free and covers all the major security threats. Learn more and download by going to virginmedia.com/security.

3. Make sure your Wi-Fi is secure

Check that your wireless router is password protected and that you've got encryption switched on. Neighbours or anyone in your Wi-Fi range could be using your connection without your knowledge and slowing you down. For more detail on how to avoid this and change these settings go to virginmedia.com/help/wireless.

4. Other members of your household eating up your connection

Large amounts of uploading or downloading could be taking place without your knowledge. The most common application to use large amounts of data is file sharing software. If you use a Windows 98 or XP computer and you're unsure whether file sharing software is installed on computers in your home, or you wish to remove it if it is, a software utility called Digital File Check* is available that can check for you.

This can be found at ifpi.org/dfc * You can also learn more about File Sharing by going to our FAQ virginmedia.com/peaktimefaq

We strongly recommend that you follow these tips in order to get the best broadband performance in future. Especially the first tip of scheduling non-time critical downloads.

There are several tools you can use to check how much you're downloading or uploading such as tbbMeter (thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html *) and there are others available at softpedia.com *

Thank you for your attention.

Yours sincerely

I checked the Shub activity log and saw 2.155Gb over 12 hours (that's 4 users on Pcs and an Xbox). I use a program called Bitmeter on each PC which records all traffic on each PC. I added together the biggest DL days and got one spike of 8Gb in a day in MAY!!

2 Attachment(s)
unzip attached file, using WinSCP connect to your ddwrt router and download the 2 files to the /tmp folder - chmod both files to have execute permissions

create a new txt file in the /tmp folder names macs.txt - This is used to map mac addresses to hostname - format of file is

macaddress,hostname,

now ssh to the ddwrt router, navigate to /tmp folder and run the collect.sh script

you will see following in your console Window

Please wait...
Updating Database
Publish Data To Web Page
Setting Up Bandwidth Monitor
Reading Bandwidth Monitor Data

To view the data navigate to http://router_ip/user/usage.html

attached is screenshot of what you will see

if you reboot the router you will loose the usage data. The data is stored in a usage.db file in /tmp folder - you can modify the script to upload the file to your pc as a backup - so if you need to reboot you can restore the backed up usage data file

I think they had to stop sending the threatening letters if they wanted to continue to advertise unlimited downloads. Clearly the ASA decided it's difficult to download an unlimited amount if your ISP has pulled the plug after a few hours of downloading.

kwikbreaks 14-07-2012 09:06

Re: Just got a warning letter

It probably depends a lot on when the downloading is done. A while back on 50Mbps the STM would take you down to 12.5Mbps but now on a doubled 50Mbps you can download at 50Mbps all the time which must have a bigger inpact on the puny pipes most areas still have - mine has 5 downstreams or 250Mbps and a single user chewing 20% of that at peak time must be bad news for the other 200+ trying to use the service.

I did one experiment to check if 15:00 - 16:00 really is STM free (it isn't) but for the most part I kick off big downloads just as I'm off to bed.

I see they have timeshifted when you should move your downloads from 9pm to midnight. See http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...al%20use%20FAQ

by the way, if you hit stm everyday you will break this detrimental usage thing. It could be you are just downloading between these times and thus hitting the letter stage.

Where exactly does it mention Midnight in that link as I think you have misread it as all it states is the below.

Quote:

What is an acceptable level of usage?

We do not have a defined acceptable usage figure as it depends on whether an individual’s use of their connection is affecting the service of other customers in their local area. All we’re asking is that you think about what’s causing these high levels of traffic between 0900 and 2100 and move that heavy traffic to the off peak period (i.e. to between 2100 and 0900 daily).

20Mb and below

It doesn't. But in their warning letters before the original poster and taf it says their peak time is now mid-day to midnight and not 9 to 9.

"As you may know with Virgin Broadband we don't limit the amount that you can download. So their policies say one thing but their warning letters say another.

As their own site still says 2100 to 0900 the letters are wrong and they would be incorrect in sending any such letters out as they could be sued for doing so or for disconnecting you as that is enough evidence to prove them wrong.

Sorry, but LOL! I just had to pick this one up.

"As you may know with Virgin Broadband we don't limit the amount you can download... except when you download stuff, then we limit it. Perhaps you could go on to night shifts and only use your broadband when our poor network can cope."

Virgin will try to put a positive spin on anything. Punished for using your broadband? Sentenced to STM for 5 hours? Yeah!!!

Well I just got one of these emails. I keep my downloads after 9pm onwards aswell and I rarely download anything before this time. I rarely hit stm. I think we did it twice in the last 3 months.

There also give a new link the email http://virginmedia.com/peaktimefaq

So there are now three management pages:

normal stm:

decremental usage:

peak time use (12-12midnight) (new one):

Why don't they do it the way Sky do an just remove all STM l, traffic management and throttling of any kind giving users a completely none managed download service?

Sky have users on 80mb down and 20mb+ upload unmanaged 24/7 aswell as users on 40mb down and 10mb up again completely unmanaged.

wish fibre was at my exchange. If I lived 200m down the road I would be on a different exchange and be able to get it. I do have a normal be adsl connection that I use if I want anything very quickly inside stm times.

My connection has been flakley recently (see http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...wer-level.html its still not fully resolved altohugh its been better in the last couple of weeks.) so I been downloading when I can outside stm times (after 9pm) daily sometimes instead of saving it for a night run so I guess that was triggered the email.

Sky have users on 80mb down and 20mb+ upload unmanaged 24/7 aswell as users on 40mb down and 10mb up again completely unmanaged.

btw, isn't Sky Broadband Connect subject to Traffic Management* and Data Usage caps, and Sky Broadband Everyday Lite subject to Usage Management? ;)

Sky Broadband Connect Traffic Management Policy
We continuously monitor and efficiently manage the performance of Sky Broadband Connect to ensure that we provide a sustainable quality broadband service to our customers. When our network is busy we give priority to applications such as browsing, email, streaming, instant messaging, gaming and VOIP.

This means that certain applications which use up a lot of bandwidth (for example peer-to-peer file-sharing, large file downloads and newsgroups), which have a negative effect on other customers, may run slower at peak times. Our network is busiest between 4pm and 11pm on weekdays and all day at the weekend, but can be busy at other times too, depending on regional, national and international demand.

In addition, we monitor customers who use the most bandwidth and whose usage is having a negative effect on other customers. Customers who breach the Usage Cap or who regularly download large amounts at peak times will have restrictions placed on their accounts to reduce their download speeds at peak times....

...Section 2: Traffic management to optimise network utilisation
(what happens during busy times and places in addition to traffic management as described in section 1)

Is traffic management used during peak hours? Yes

When are typical peak hours? Weekdays: 16:00 - 23:00, Weekends: All day

Yes they are, but all Skys fibre products 80/20 and 40/10 are unmanaged as is sky's ADSL LLU Product.

My point is why don't virgin just remove all management from the 50/5 and 100/10 products? Saves all the hassle of customers having to time there downloads.

It's not a Sky v VirgInmedia thing, just common sense to offer a toptear service unmanaged by the provider.

Sorry I meant all virginmedias tiers are managed only sky connect and lite are managed.

Sky Broadband Unlimited, Sky Fibre Unlimited, Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro

Our Unlimited Broadband product is not subject to any traffic management, this means that we won't slow you down at any time regardless of how much you upload or download.

... but if all your neighbours are hammering the network at top speed 24/7 that might just slow you down a bit ;):p::D

Maybe, but since your neighbours bandwidth and your own bandwidth is dedicated and uncontended all the way to the DSLAM, it's far less of a problem than it is on VM.

I would surmise that VM's network might implode if they did that. :D

yup, nice to see that other isps are leading the way though which will put pressure on VM. Advertising the fastest speeds will only get you so far if everyone knows that they cant really use it.
