Power Supply

Hi all got my superhub running in modem mode but find that the powersupply gets really hot in wall socket and sometimes causes SH to hang so i reboot it,
Is this is a known fault?

the shub crashing and rebooting yes, the power supply/modem mode causing it no

Re: Power Supply

Im not sure if the power supply is causing the fault just a symptom i found, but the SH is in modem mode and rebooting it does seem to help?

Re: Power Supply

Mine is in hub mode which should, if there is any change, use more power and my PSU is only warm.

Are you sure you have the correct PSU - the Superhub one is 12v 1.5A and a frequent complaint used to be that installers had just swapped out a modem for a hub and left the old 10v 1.0A modem PSU to run it.

Rebboting might clear memory problems caused by firmware bugs but wouldn't give enough respite to let anything cool down much.

Re: Power Supply

Is the superhub adapter also making a high pitch buzzing sound?
You should phone up and get it replaced ...they'll send a whole new SH

Ok checked my power supply and the rating is 10V 1.2 amps?

Is this incorrect? Can someone check theirs please

Re: Power Supply

yeah its incorrect, you should have 12v 1.5A

Re: Power Supply

They must have reused your old power supply instead of swapping it for the one supplied with the Shub. Not very clever on their part, they must know that it would cause problems :(

Re: Power Supply

Rung up and got a new superhub coming, think its shocking that such an error has been made. :(

Re: Power Supply

As I said in post #4 it was a very common error and it sounds like it maybe still is. I suspect that many installers get no training at all and so long as the plug fits then job's a good'un and they're off.

I think it's shocking that yet another Superhub will be headed for landfill because the VM system can't cope with handling a separate PSU.

Which is really rather worrying kwik. How can it be that they are let loose in a van yet have little or no clue about what it is that they're supposed to be doing? Just doesn't make any sense. Most of the engineers who have come out to us were fairly au fait, but there were a couple of notable exceptions. I have a background in car hifi and security so I'm reasonably clued up on electrical and electronic stuff. Not knowing that a PSU is the wrong voltage and can't deliver the current is just unbelievable :D

Re: Power Supply

The only reason I knew it was common was by the number of complaints in the VM community forum when I was spending a bit of time there getting my own connection issues sorted out.

I think there are VM staffers on installs and also contractors. One of the VM blokes here may spill the beans if their non-disclosure doesn't prevent it.

Where VM could end up in trouble is if one on the underrated PSUs catches fire - you said yours was running very hot - if that caused a house fire and the cause was pinpointed.....

There a few other things going on that I see day to day that so far haven't been mentioned, or noticed yet, a lot of virgin techs are untrained and feckless

Hmm, that's interesting. I've just checked, the engineer did that with ours, it's stillon the old power supply, and we have had no problems, over about 4 months

Re: Power Supply

It's ironic they can't get this right, because the documentation that comes with the superhub when you do a self-install makes it absolutely clear that you must use the new power supply when you install it.

Re: Power Supply

but it's a C.B.A. issue with for the 'engineers', obviously.

I'll dig about to see where I put the one that came with the SH (don't remember even seeing it TBH) and swap it tonight.

There's a good chance that they didn't leave it with you. If that's the case then you should call and get one sent to you. You said that this hasn't caused a problem, but it would make sense to have the correct device.

Re: Power Supply

Same thing happened to me, they just used the PSU that was for the SA 2100. It was running rather hot. When the TiVo installer came a few weeks after I got him to change it.

However the SuperHub PSU has stopped my Powerline network from working - it must be throwing out some noise I expect. It works perfectly when I unplug it.
