Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
For the last couple of weeks I have noticed a tremendous improvement in my speeds, jitter, ping and latency. I am not on the beta R36, have I just been lucky or is there something going on in VM network? I am now not getting wasted as easily due to crappy ping on BF3 and my downloads are constitent. All I need now is a SHUB that can provide 100mbps over wireless and I am set. Quite ironic when I was on the verge of leaving for BT Infinity. :erm: I can't believe I am saying this, but bloody bravo Virgin! :D

Mine went very similar
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...28-06-2012.png Not sure if it will last. J |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Really strange, and yes I am wondering how long it will last lol. Wondering if someone who works for Virgin can comment without breaking their NDA lol?

My IP has changed in Lincoln but sadly not much else. I could definitely do with some of whatever you've got.

Good grief babis3g, that's a massive improvement dude :)

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
As usual with VM I suspect they will be skipping problem areas, my area has yet to see this sudden improvment and I suspect its too expensive here for VM to upgrade.

How much you wanna bet it's all just students going away on holiday... Same every year, July is perfect, September it all crashes down again.

Holy Moses - if the peering was too poor to carry audio streaming I'm surprised the fibre wasn't melting down.

A Superhub that will do100mbps wireless? Can I have some of what you're taking please? Joking aside, there has been a massive improvement with regard to jitter and latency of late. It would seem that VM have upped their game recently and as you say "Bravo Virgin". We're on the R36 trial and so far it is an huge step forwards. The network upgrades are an entirely different issue Let's hope that this is not a flash in the pan mate  |

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Just considering all the possibilities.
As others have said, a particular channel set can cover a large geographic area, and not necessarily in an obvious or logical manner. It's the shared capacity that matters not the physical location of the users, people 10 miles away could be sharing your capacity (and affecting your connection) while others on the next street don't My definition of local on VM would be everything from the CMTS down to the end user, the edge network being everything from the CMTS to the core, and the core being well, the bits that have core in their name. |

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
I think the "substantial upgrades" are more like substantial changes to p2p throttling, tried p2p'ing before and i might as well have drove to all the seeders houses and copied the data onto a memory stick
|
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Spot on.

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?

I don't use P2P so wouldn't have any idea if the throttling has changed but it certainly fits my old chestnut about a single 100/10 user seeding being the reason my own connection went to the dogs. Have the hours of shaping been increased as well as the level though? If not why is overnight looking better too - I would have expected it to get worse as people shifted their download schedules. |

For many people it happened in the middle of the day, usually between 12pm and midnight.

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Yeah, mines crawling along at 5.7 MB/s
|
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
just had package lose.
Log in to the modem and from 5 downstream channels had before was 4 after the small package lost reboot modem 5th channel come back Dont know what VM is up too Seems like the 5th channel is fake |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Looking at my ThinkBroadband ping monitor my pings have definitely dropped substantially recently.
This is good - I'm actually less tempted to cancel now. |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Ive never (touch wood) had ANY issues to bring my internet to a halt.
However, I do live in a small town where most people are using satellite, so I must not be sharing my connection with too many heavy users. Good going VirginMedia! Looking forward to my doubled speed now :D |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Something has definitely happened here (Watford) - TBB graph looks so much better recently, and speedtest results are spot on at the moment.

I have gone from 6 downstream channels to 4, speeds are fine. What the hell is going on?

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
here in london too
Had a smile for 3 weeks about but did not last i tried factory reset, reboot, reset, take power cord in out...nothing And the Olympics is near My jitter with modem mode gone up to 14ms We all had jitter from 6-14 varying My monitor my mate next door http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...16-07-2012.png mate from work http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...16-07-2012.png That VM today....HURAYYYYYYY |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
I am in the Leicester area and have noticed a huge difference in speed and latency. Before I couldn't touch 10MBS, I would usually get around 7 or 8, now I can hit OVER 10MBS and hit 11-12 sometimes even 13 on Steam.
Noticed a difference in Ping as well. |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
You won't get over 10Mbps on a 10Mbps connection. You are either measuring it wrongly or you've been doubled and it can't deliver the 20Mbps.
|
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
hes on 100mbps and talking about MBps ;)
|
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
It clearly says 100Mb under his services list.
|
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
the speed testers for me quoting 100-106Mbps(Megabits) but when i actually download file it varies from 9-12something MBS(MegaBytes)
Can not wait for the upload...the new VM checker say my area is completed http://doublespeed.virginmedia.com/?...DoubleSpeeds_2 |
Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?
Looks more like they made some substantial network downgrades around these parts, right abouts midnight last night:

Don't know what they done but after call ended thinking they may done something, i thought to give one more reset Now after the reset (just once) upstream channel changed even with r36 firmware BINGO! take a note before 3pm how jitter changed HAPPY :p: :D :dunce: Hope will stay like this at peak evening hours even today i am using the internet little more I think is not bad for a busy area here in London http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...18-07-2012.png |
