Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?

For the last couple of weeks I have noticed a tremendous improvement in my speeds, jitter, ping and latency. I am not on the beta R36, have I just been lucky or is there something going on in VM network? I am now not getting wasted as easily due to crappy ping on BF3 and my downloads are constitent. All I need now is a SHUB that can provide 100mbps over wireless and I am set. Quite ironic when I was on the verge of leaving for BT Infinity. :erm: I can't believe I am saying this, but bloody bravo Virgin! :D

Not sure if it will last.

Really strange, and yes I am wondering how long it will last lol. Wondering if someone who works for Virgin can comment without breaking their NDA lol?

My IP has changed in Lincoln but sadly not much else. I could definitely do with some of whatever you've got.

Yikes, I was having similar a few months ago. You just have to keep at them, threaten them with CEO office and rince and repeat. Don't give up is the key! I seem to be ok for about 12 months after a massive rant, then things go to pot. I then have to spend another 3-4 months ranting, tech visits, senior tech visits and numerous phone calls until it gets fixed.

As usual with VM I suspect they will be skipping problem areas, my area has yet to see this sudden improvment and I suspect its too expensive here for VM to upgrade.

You can't have it all ways - in a different thread you were telling me the improvement was down to local network changes and here it's because the students are off. I doubt you'd find any students at all in my local network area.

Same here... I think it more than likely a peering upgrade/change after the spotify issues ( http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5...-equation.html ) ;)

It would seem that VM have upped their game recently and as you say "Bravo Virgin". We're on the R36 trial and so far it is an huge step forwards. The network upgrades are an entirely different issue Let's hope that this is not a flash in the pan mate

It seems that your definition of the local network is a tad different from mine.

Having seen your many varied posts in numerous threads over the last few days I can't make up my mind if you are trolling or just being a plain arse.

qasdfdsaq 03-07-2012 21:11

Re: Is it just me or has VM made some substantial network upgrades?

Just considering all the possibilities.

As others have said, a particular channel set can cover a large geographic area, and not necessarily in an obvious or logical manner. It's the shared capacity that matters not the physical location of the users, people 10 miles away could be sharing your capacity (and affecting your connection) while others on the next street don't

My definition of local on VM would be everything from the CMTS down to the end user, the edge network being everything from the CMTS to the core, and the core being well, the bits that have core in their name.

The contention point is surely the optical node and that is virtually always within half a mile or so as it gets fed by coax which needs an amp every few hundred meters. The same set of channels almost certainly are used 10 miles away but they aren't using my capacity as my traffic won't be on them just as those people's traffic won't be on mine. Surely you can't believe that my 45.8MHz upstream is shared with everybody else in the country who happens to be on the same frequency?

I think the "substantial upgrades" are more like substantial changes to p2p throttling, tried p2p'ing before and i might as well have drove to all the seeders houses and copied the data onto a memory stick

So instead of making smart-arse one liners as replies and annoying people why didn't you say so days back?

I don't use P2P so wouldn't have any idea if the throttling has changed but it certainly fits my old chestnut about a single 100/10 user seeding being the reason my own connection went to the dogs.

Have the hours of shaping been increased as well as the level though? If not why is overnight looking better too - I would have expected it to get worse as people shifted their download schedules.

Because I had twenty different suspicious and couldn't be bothered explaining them all, when people are already set on their own ones anyway.

I don't know. People have accused VM of shaping outside the shaping hours and STM'ing outside STM'ing hours so I'm not entirely sure what hours of shaping are or what they're supposed to be.

Ive never (touch wood) had ANY issues to bring my internet to a halt.

However, I do live in a small town where most people are using satellite, so I must not be sharing my connection with too many heavy users.

Did you have an outage before the change? Could be a cable segmentation change so you now have fewer users sharing the 4 channels.

I am in the Leicester area and have noticed a huge difference in speed and latency. Before I couldn't touch 10MBS, I would usually get around 7 or 8, now I can hit OVER 10MBS and hit 11-12 sometimes even 13 on Steam.

Noticed a difference in Ping as well.

You won't get over 10Mbps on a 10Mbps connection. You are either measuring it wrongly or you've been doubled and it can't deliver the 20Mbps.

I tried many attempts to change locked channel for finding less congested one(R35 was fine but R36 is not letting me),including reboot, factory reset, back of the SH resets more than 5 times, take power cord in/out,taking main coax cable in/out...nothing
My jitter with modem mode gone up to 14ms in some parts of the day

My monitor

Rang the support for an other issue and they reboot my modem
Don't know what they done but after call ended thinking they may done something, i thought to give one more reset
Now after the reset (just once) upstream channel changed even with r36 firmware
BINGO! take a note before 3pm how jitter changed
