I like the way they've implemented it, you get a remind and record option combined so if you miss the reminder it still records the programme for you, nice!

Nor in north London yet either although they could be rolling it out over several days, that seems to be the way they do it nowadays :)

It is, apparently, a "trial" of the new update.

Anyway, from those shots it looks like they have implemented it wrongly. No-one wanted it to record, they just wanted reminding it was on :D

Yep I was going to say the same thing as all the moaning was they just wanted reminding and not recording as they they have to be reminded to go and delete the recording.

Classic

Not if it's set to keep until space is needed, as in the picture above.

For a feature that belongs back in the 1980's, I think they've done it right. No one should be watching TV as it's broadcast anymore.

I thought i was going crazy when I saw that screen shot too, maybe VM can set reminders for as to switch over to new channels when they come online as well:D

I so agree Carl ( Scarey:dozey:)What are they thinking of .
Let me guess its easy to put up a message linked to record. Instead of a message that is not. The tec minded please comment :D

If you don't respond the Tivo changes channel to the set reminder.

As this is only a trial at this stage hopefully they'll make the relevant changes prior to rolling the update out across their network. Alternatively if they get positive feedback from people using the new function, I've got a feeling it's here to stay. Better to have it this way than not at all?

I'm not bothered as I will never use it however it would still show up in space used etc with a recording and I would not want that.
With me always hovering around the 90+% used on a 1TB box I would not want a rogue programme or 2 in My shows that I had forgotten I had watched live at the time.

Re: Reminders are here!

I don't see why it needs to be "remind and record". Surely just an auto-tune would be sufficient as if you wanted to record it it would be in the buffer so pressing "R" would record the whole programme anyway.

What if you're not in the room when the reminder appears? It doesnt stay on screen for long,I see recording as probably necessary to prevent TiVo using the tuner for another recording i.e. a series link which is clashing.

Stephen 27-06-2012 13:44

Re: Reminders are here!

I knew this would happen when rolled out after seeing it for the first time. Its the way that TiVo implemented it and I am sure they only did it this way as it was the only way to do it on TiVo.

At least when the reminder pops up you can just click cancel the recording and then change the channel.

If you aren't in the room then why set a reminder in the first place. Just record it and you can watch it when you return to the room :)

Well in that case if it something you have been planning to watch then you shouldn't be forgetting about it.

However this has been brought up many times before and just goes round in circles.

The 'live' bit is a non argument. Even if it is recorded, you can watch it live. It will play as soon as it starts recording; to avoid even a potential miniscule delay, add some padding to the front of the recording, start watching slightly early and fast forward.

Re: Reminders are here!

What I was hoping for was a carbon copy of the V+ reminders complete with the automatic channel switch just as the programme is starting. This was something I used to find very useful before I switched to TiVo - for instance when I was in the kitchen preparing food and wanted to catch the start of the news. This implementation seems to miss the whole point. If I wanted to record something then I'd set it to record. I hope there's still time for VM to build this simple functionality into the feature before it's fully rolled out.

BenMcr 27-06-2012 16:39

Re: Reminders are here!

According to other posts, TiVo does automatically switch channel?

Also remember the V+HD reminders were in the code BEFORE recording functions were available - which is why there were in there. So they are seperate to scheduling a recording.

TiVo was designed from the get-go to record things, so reminders have to work with recordings

I can see there ever being a remind only option on TiVo

It's probably important for it to record so that the tuner can't start recording something else. One tuner on v+ is reserved for live TV but that's not the case on TiVo.

Re: Reminders are here!

Its not how I was expecting reminders to work, seams to have unnecessary options, but a big thumbs up for bringing the functionality to everyone who wants to use it, all those who see Reminders as being pointless and redundant can happy ignore the feature

Re: Reminders are here!

I used to use reminders to change the channel for my 5 year old son before he knew how to use the remote and would like the feature to work as it does on the V+/VHD boxes as my 2 1/2 year old is starting to like different things now instead of just being happy with watching disney Jr for a couple of hours on a morning. I don't see a need for it to set a recording as well as if I wanted to record it I would.

GrimUpNorth 27-06-2012 21:08

Re: Reminders are here!

When snoozing on the sofa (AKA working from home) I used to like settting a couple of reminders on the V+ so I had something interesting in the background to 'work' to. I've got to admit that until it's rolled out to a Tivo near me it will remain one of the big missing features from the future of TV. The automatic record seems a bit daft - maybe Tivo misunderstood the VM request, hey remember the NASA/ESA metric/imperial fiasco?

Cheers

Grim

I think Carl cannot comprehend the benefit of reminders for some people’s lifestyles so will have to put up with such comments or filter of course.

It is a welcome addition to the options users have to decide how they capture programmes and especially useful for those people busy in the house and want to watch a programme as it happens for whatever reason.

But is this another case of Tivo making something harder than it needs to be yet again, you just need an option for reminders only as well as reminders + recording (a useful option but not core so would keep IMHO) so you don't have to delete the recording if you do not want it after the programme is watched. Doing something simple just seems to be beyond the capability of Tivo developers or is the software code that restrictive? I hope not for the future and this is just the initial test release.

Except that you know full well that that's not completely true, don't you Carl? It will only switch to the programme that's being recorded if it uses the currently active tuner. If it uses one of the other tuners it will record in the background without switching. That's right, when it doesn't fit your usage patterns it must be laziness.

You've been given several examples in the many threads you've participated in of how and when it would be useful, none of which involve laziness so stop pretending that you don't know why they're wanted by some users. Just because you're an old-school TiVo user you act as if you're personally offended when people want to deviate from the "pure" TiVo experience and quite frankly it's getting tiresome seeing you feign ignorance just for the sake of arguing.

I guess its because up to their usual standards Virgin/TiVo have not (as yet) delivered what the users, that, want reminders actually want.

My guess is all (ok nearly all) would be ex V+ users . All that was/is required is to replicate how it worked/s on that. Clearly this is something that`s hard to understand:D

Well Victor the TiVo has deliverd in spades so far and there is plenty more to come but l suppose some serial moaners will never be happy no matter what.:)

Sorry Den its not a moan its a statement. TiVo has time & time again come up short of the mark. I guess if you want Hangman & Star trek apps, or poor pictures on the red button yes its delivered in spades. If you mean reminders that do that, quick & easy access to a programme no.
Granted its in the lead but given today`s standards ( see the new apple lap top, wow that has some great pictures I would even say forget TV`s under 21" its far better ) Its not going to be there a lot longer. The price coming down, in real terms shows it was over hyped.

Its good but not great - that I can live with when all said & done its a PVR with a lot ( for me I accept) toys on it. That still fails on what I consider basic options. Long on promises short on delivery. I just hope that new subscribers go in with eyes open. Still I will stick with it as Leslie used to say "the price is right"
I wonder how much 3 SKY + boxes( multi room)would cost with BB ? more the virgin I guess :D So stick with it for now :(

Aren't Tivo features; they're VM features :)

They promised a Tivo and that's what we got. Everything else is just gravy. (As they say!)

I'm sure TIVO listen to VM customers needs and work hard with VM to tweak things , dont forget VM customers represent over 25% of TIVOs entire worldwide subscriber base.

I'm not sure what the problem is?

If you set a reminder and aren't about to see it you end up with the programe being recorded. If you are you hit the button to change channel, if you don't want it recorded hit the record button. What's wrong with that?

From what has been said, Reminders as implemented, change to a channel when the selected show starts. That sounds like a reminder function working to me.

Having to also delete the show is not ideal (for reminder purists). But that isn't what you said. The function that you said doesn't work, does in fact work.

But it could have O so, much more simple. If I want to record I will set to record.

If I want reminding to get a pint of milk. How about the shop saying you did not come so we have brought it to you ( daft I know but its the best I can think of at the moment):dunce:

Nothing but as usual the doomsayers are having another episode based on what they are not happy with but if they said any different that would be a pleasant surprise based on our experiences of them so far.:)

I suppose, but in the case you say with the milk/shop, if I didn't remember/couldn't go I would want them to bring me a pint, that's handy!!

It is how ever sooooooo unnecessary, pointless & irritating. :D
Not forgetting that whist it may show on the TiVo that may not be the method by which to see it ( However that is not really their concern ) Or even down to in, our house simply going to another room to see that show on the V+.

It just seems that it has been made unnecessarily complicated. That said I am sure that any reminder is better ( for me) than none at all. I guess its a case of careful what you wish for.

Try Home->Interactive->Games. There are far more there than on TiVo.

That's actually a great analogy. With TiVo, when the delivery man turns up at your door, you have the option of drinking the milk now, sticking it in the fridge, or turning him away.

What you seem to want is to miss the knock at the door, then get up the next day to find the fridge empty.

So let me get this right. If I want to set a reminder for the football I have to drink my milk now and then then remove the empty bottle from the fridge tomorrow? :D

Is there any improvement in channel changing and to the whole system in 15.3 update? Does anybody know?

It would be nice if somebody posted a video of 15.3 pilot update on Youtube so we can see for our selves.

No, if you don't want to drink the milk, it doesn't take up any space in your fridge, but if you change your mind, the milk will be there for you.....;)

No what you will have is a full bottle in the fridge:D

Well you can always empty it down the sink if you don't want it ;)

Actually I can sort of see why some may dislike this feature - those full fat recordings take up so much more space than the semi-skimmed ones :D

arcimedes 01-07-2012 15:44

Re: Reminders are here!

Actually the big question is, do recordings made by a reminder get preferentially deleted as suggestions do when space is needed?

I suspect not:D
