Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Hello guys,
I need help with my broadband connection and hopefully someone can take their time to analyse my ping traceroute. Below is some information:- I'm a competitive console gamer and compete in a game where broadband connection seriously matters. I understand that ping is really important for gaming and I am desperate to try and improve upon my current ping/latency, I need to reach closer to 10 if possible. Virgin 30MB Broadband Only Package Average results for testing from www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net:- https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/12.png (Ignore ping result above, I guess it's a problem with the server) (all tests and traceroutes are with an ethernet cable direct from super hub router to my computer and without any other PC's etc. on in the house). Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
You can't turn off interleave on cable.
The only way you can improve your ping is to move to a better ISP. VM are the worst ISP in the country when it comes to consistency of pings. |

What ping can I expect to have with VM 100MB broadband?
Hello guys,
I am a competitive console gamer and compete in a game where broadband connection seriously matters and so any help will be much appreciated. I understand that ping is extremely important for gaming. My current broadband is 30MB Virgin Media Broadband, below are average speed test results:- https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/11.png (Ignore ping result above, i'm guessing there is a problem with the server) http://www.pingtest.net/result/65160937.png My ping isn't up to scratch to compete with other gamers at the moment. So i'm looking into purchasing the 100MB Virgin Media Broadband package to improve my ping. Anyone with 100MB Virgin Media Broadband, if you could post your average ping's below it would be much appreciated, just to get an idea for the average customer ping's with this package. If anyone knows how much (if any) my ping will improve by, please reply, any help will me much appreciated. Thanks for reading guys, any help will be much appreciated! ---------- Post added at 20:39 ---------- Previous post was at 20:36 ---------- ---------- Post added at 20:45 ---------- Previous post was at 20:39 ---------- bump |

Either way if you want my true opinion, if gaming is the main reason you want a broadband connection then Virgin is a bad idea. As Qasi said, Virgin are the worst for consistency of latency, i know this first hand as i've been battling with Virgin for a while about the issue. If you can swap over to BT Infinity, i'd strongly recommend that, or if not, just go to ADSL. It's not all about headline speed with Latency, one doesn't necessarily affect the other, i could get an ADSL line in with a top throughput of 3 megabit and still beat Virgin hands down on latency and jitter. |

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Lies. At times of low congestion you can get 10ms pings from Manchester just fine on VM. Swansea's closer so I see no reason why you couldn't, the only reason the OP's ping is so high is cause VM had the superb wisdom of routing traffic via their uber-slow Birmingham link.
Not all ISPs share VM's slow, fat pipe philosophy. BT for example get data from London to Birmingham 3-6x faster than VM |

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Could FTTC deliver less than 10ms pings consistently from Swansea to (say) London? I'm not convinced. It would be significantly better than VM though, one would imagine.

Top competitive gamers who are anal about latency will have leased lines or are lucky enough to use ISPs who serve only their local area with their own network and don't have to worry about hundreds of thousands of customers. You just aren't going to get the sort of service you want unless you do the same. |
Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Be* fastpath used to give low results like this but they seem to have gone down the majorty route of overselling nowadays
|
Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Quote:
A good network will get data from London to Swansea in about 4-6ms. The latency of the FTTC hop itself is <4.7ms, so add that together you'd get <8.7ms ping in a best-case scenario. Don't have solid numbers for BT Infinity but last I checked Swansea was reached in ~5.5ms which plus the FTTC hop would give you a consistent ~10ms exactly. ---------- Post added at 02:32 ---------- Previous post was at 02:23 ---------- Quote:

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
This is a typical ping for me. To have any jitter is unusual on this connection.
http://www.pingtest.net/result/65253553.png I am probably lucky to have good line quality trouble-free over all, my issues with up load speed the other week not withstanding. Having said that I see some packet loss on the current graph. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...25-06-2012.png During speed tests my ping is close to 20ms, but in IE9 it it usually lower <15ms. I guess we need to be aware that our own setup can influence ping tests. |
Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
I had ADSL1 BT line before moving to an area with Cable. I used adsl24 isp via BT 20cn network (connected to london i think)
I got between 15-16ms on adsl1 |

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
I have a question about pings, so thought I would put it in here.
My brother he has VM 10Mb and his pings are around 17ms he has the hub, he is wireles. I am on 100Mb and mine are around 32ms, I have the superhub, I am wired. Can someone tell me why my pings are higher? Just did a pingtest.net and my connection has got worse http://www.pingtest.net/result/65259164.png The jitter has got some what worse, I always use to get A or A+ |

They generally cost hundreds of pounds per month for a few megabits, reaching into several thousand pounds per month for a decent "broadband" speed. ---------- Post added at 17:55 ---------- Previous post was at 17:53 ---------- Quote:

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Eclipse AFAIK use BT's network for fibre, so you'd have to be near a FTTC enabled exchange and cabinet.

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute

Virgin have their own fibre backbone and run all their own cabinets the same way as BT do, only BT's network is open to other ISP's like Eclipse, Talk Talk, Sky etc etc, Virgin's isn't, thank god, because it would be even worse than it is now. ADSL with fastpath is going to be the best bet for you with latency. |
Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
Does anyone think my pings/latency will improve/lower if I upgrade my current, 30MB Virgin Media Broadband to 100MB Virgin Media Broadband? Please, if anyone has done this before or has knowledge on the matter, please reply, my question still hasn't been answered , thanks.

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
All FTTC providers use the same fibre infrastructure - Openreach's - for the local loop. Most with the notable exception of two providers use BTw's backhaul network as well so are at BT's mercy for routing. The two that don't could potentially provide better or worse pings but everyone else will be the near enough the same.
I would find someone near you who is on BT and do a traceroute from their machines to a gaming server. That would give you the baseline of what to expect on BTw. BT aren't bad last I checked but certain LLU providers would be better. No way of knowing without trying them out in your local area or speaking to someone who has. |

I've read that BE are pretty good for gamers, latency wise being one of the best.

Yeah they should be relatively similar. Sky use their own equipment in the exchange, and BT's copper network to do the rest.

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute
I did say relatively, and not identical, but that would of course rule out Sky as Qasi is suggesting. Interleaving mode introduces latency, so you'll want an ISP that offers fast path or indeed no interleave.
