Shall I switch to superhub or not?

Hi all,

I really can't decide whether to go from 20 - 60Mb including changing to the superhub or not, I hear so many bad stories about how people on DOCSIS 3 are worse off, I am torn.

I would benefit from a 3x increase in max theoretical bandwidth, and also I believe ports can be opened on the superhub, unlike my Netgear WNR2000v2, and I would find this useful. I am very happy with my 20Mb but think if I can achieve more for free, I want to.

If DOCSIS3 performance makes a difference based on area, I am area 20 - ST4/Stoke on Trent

Hope someone can help me in my dilemma, thank you in advance.

I changed from 20 to 60 with a new superhub a month or two back and have had no problems whatsoever. The wireless range I find roughly equivalent to my previous Linksys router, though this speedtest was done with a cable connection:

Back in the old days, going from DOCSIS 1.x to DOCSIS 3 usually meant you were better off, nowadays I wouldn't know as it's been so long since I've been on the old network and all new customers are put on D3 anyway.

Performance does vary by area, but the only people who can tell you what you're actually likely to get probably won't.

As for the relative merits of the Superhub, I'll leave that to someone who's actually used one on VM...

Your gonna have to change one day, it's unusual to have an issue so I'd say to for it,

That was the freebie router I had from VM and I don't recall any problems with port forwarding. What can't you do? The Superhub in general is more restrictive than most routers I've seen.

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

if you dont want performance to dip then wait for the mainstream R36 update to be released then you should be able to move over with no fuss

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

I moved 20 to 60 and gained a Superhub a few months back. Not had any issues with it. The wireless range is poor compared to my previous router, but it's a lot more reliable so I accept the trade off.

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

He could go with the SH now if he runs it in modem-only mode and using his WNR2000v2 for a router. This will support 60Mb.

If he wants to switch back to full mode after the firmware upgrade then that's fine. He will still benefit from 20Mbx3 in the meantime.

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

initial feedback is that the superhub on R36 is not outperforming the VMNG300 in some ways.

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

i would never expect it to outperform it

id say it outperforms it in modem mode

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

lower constant jitter coupled with the ability to bond more channels

RB2004 21-06-2012 21:52

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

why has my post been modified?

I dont remember writing that it is not outperforming the VMNG300?

I wrote "R36 is outperforming the VMNG300 in some ways."

which is true!

lots of people have said R36 has reduced jitter to levels lower than the VMNG300
Superhub alsohas wireless.. good or not its something that the VNMG300 doesnt have.. it also bonds 8 channels which the VMNG300 doesnt.

So even in normal mode it has become what is looking like a better device.. and in modem mode certainly now there is possibility it is outperforming the VMNG300 now that VM are starting to iron out the problems.

Prove it (jitter)

RB2004 21-06-2012 23:11

Don't need to, lots of people on the R36 trial have already discovered the jitter reduction to be true.

They can't all be wrong!

I wasn't disputing the reduction in jitter to be true, i was asking for proof that the reduction in jitter rivals and beats the VMNG300 as has been claimed...

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

agree with modem mode outperforming, the fact it has wireless is irrelevant as theres still a tonne of bugs not to mention poor speeds, plus they will never fix range issues with the crappy positioned internal antannae

Thanks for the undisputable comparative evidence between the two... there is truly no doubt what so ever :p:

Sounds like a Harry Hill 'FIGHT' situation going on here .....

Yes, I agree some are reporting better, but also some are reporting not.
I think I will just sit tight and wait for the firmware to come out of beta and see how it shapes up.

I've never wanted or needed an "all in one" and still maintain my stance that Virginmedia should have provided (even at an extra one off cost) a solid reliable modern cable modem for those who want to maintain their own LAN side equipment.

Anyway, time to get off my soapbox!!

exactly, you have hit the nail on the head. There has never been any consistancy; some shubs crash, some don't, wireless works fine for some, others it doesnt.

I don't care what people say, I am never going to use a shub till my poor VMNG300 dies (may it rest in peace) and I am forced to. Even if this revision of firmware does fix everything (which it doesnt), it is still too little too late.

Hearsay. Where is the hard proof?

Show me a ping graph comparing the VMNG300 and the Superhub in modem mode under R36 firmware. Like i said, i am not disputing it, simply asking for evidence, which isn't too hard is it?

I'm trying to determine whether it may be worth activating my Superhub, because Mark Wilkin will go ahead and update me if that is the case.

:D

Superhub R36 (ignore hump and packet loss - packet loss due to SNR, hump due to routing issue)

VMNG300 on 100mb:

seems all my VMNG TBB charts are gone!?! Dont know why it lets me go on previous days but doesnt show any data

[edit] never mind i was looking at the wrong IP, ignore the graph title this was using VMNG, you can see the "blocks" of low jitter the VMNG gives, compare this to the superhubs now steady graph

Good stuff. Be interesting to see what happens with mine then on Monday... watch it go to poop and VM refuse to reactivate my vmng300 aha

kwikbreaks 23-06-2012 09:48

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

Rather than comparing TBB charts has anybody done some real world tests and compared actual gaming performance rather than just artificial ping testing?

It occurs to me that prioritising ICMP within the router firmware could possibly give the appearance of better performance - a bit like the processor manufacturers were found to be doing some years back to make their chips look good in benchmarks.

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

VM prioritise UDP (i.e. gaming data) on their network too.

That could assist with improvements in upstream latency (i.e if ICMP packets jumped the send queue) but can't impact the downstream.

The upstream can be tested if a large TCP upload is started and then ICMP packets sent during this. If the ICMP are really queue jumping then latency for these would stay low.

But I agree, real world gaming or voip comparisons would help.

Cant really do that with 10% packet loss around the clock

Im in modem mode using my own router (the same on as before the beta)

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

Well tomorrow afternoon is when I get my own personal improvement in jitter - assuming it doesn't turn out to be a no-show of course which apparently does happen according to complaints I've seen in the BT forum.

Good luck to those of you who will be persisting with cable.

I wanted to forward ports to internal IP addresses and limit it to apply for only certain external addresses. I can't see a way to do it unless I'm being stupid

That doesn't sound like something you would be able to do with the majority of consumer oriented routers.

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

Oh. I could do it on an old Netgear you see which is why I thought I'd ask. thanks anyway.

i wonder how people make it so they can access their files from outside of their home lan with fairly normal kit :-/

If I was looking to block ip's to just a particular machine on the network I would set up a firewall on said machine to block incomming from all but the ip's you want to allow. That can be an issue however if you want to use the machine. If you still have that router you could set it up with the superhub in modem mode. But without knowing the model of the Netgear router I would have to say it might limit speeds.

Personally when I share content out of my home server I usually rely on authentication with whatever program I am using.

big_dirk 07-08-2012 18:55

Re: Shall I switch to superhub or not?

I think the old Netgear (I THINK WNR802 rings a bell....) would probably limit speeds, although I chose not to go down the superhub road in the end, because I'm possibly moving house to a non-VM area (:()

Assuming you mean user/pass auth, just out of interest, do you ever check for hack attempts?

I suppose I could go quite tech and get a firewall inside a virtual machine in my little server and route the whole internet connection through that, but I don't know if I can be bothered.....I think like you say, a username and password might be an option
