SuperHub & TP Link TL-WR1043ND Router

Im trying to setup my TP Link router with my superhub, tried it once, but wifi went really slow, which came back to normal when I switched the TP Link off n put the SuperHub back in router mode,
*has anyone successfully set up a TP Link TL-WR1043ND router with the Superhub in modem mode successfuly ?
Am wanting to have another go, but just wondering if i missed something ?*
anyone have any tips?

With that router, you have to manually tell it what your maximum download and upload speed is (via Bandwidth Control Settings), it doesn't automatically detect it. I think on mine, the default download speed was set to 2Mb and I wasn't getting anywhere near my 60Mb until I made that change.

Dunno if that helps.

I have that router and I just set it up and it worked fine, it might be worth making sure you got the latest firmware for it.

I since installed DD-WRT on mine and it's rock solid and very strong signal through my house.

It does actually, thanks footyman, will try that, thought about trying to get the router further away from the superhub when i try it,

the TP Link TL-WR1043ND seemed to work just fine with the old cable modem, VM just doubled speed from 30-60meg for a few squid more,

Pretty sure the TP Link TL-WR1043ND's F/W is up to date, Jumping, good point tho.

Thought abou dd-wrt, but bit nervous 'bout doing it in case i brick it, how long did it take Jumping ?

It was very easy really found a nice guide to help me through it was bit nervous too but it all went fine let me try and find that guide as it was easier than the instructions on DD-Wrt page...http://samiux.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03...-wr1043nd.html

Make sure you get the latest version from the DD-wrt forum too as the one shown on the main page is quite old..let see if I can find it ohh seem there been a new version released just the other day will have to flash that later..ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/Brai...-08-12-r19342/

OK, I read samiux.blogspot, seems ok, but how do you Telnet the router ? and "Issue the command : mtd -r erase nvram
reboot" ?

Sounds difficult

Jumping 16-06-2012 22:45

Re: SuperHub & TP Link TL-WR1043ND Router

You need to install a telnet client, you can install the windows one by going to turn windows features on or off.

once you have the telnet client installed you go to a command prompt and type telnet ip login using the username password and then you can type in the mtd -r erase nvram command.

Thanks, v/handy, i also have a Linksys E4200 router which i can try with the Superhub in modem mode, it has a different chipset, got the Linksys E4200 first at a good price, then, when it wasn't as great as i imagined, maybe i was wrong ? i saw the tl-wr1043nd at a great price, and it has external detachable aerials, the Linksys E4200 has internal aerials, but seems to have more advanced internals.

My ideal setup could be the Linksys E4200 as modem, Superhub in modem, with the tl-wr1043nd on dd-wrt as a repeater.

why do have to erase nvram ?

so if i just download all the software needed, i dont have to have the TL-WR1043ND plugged into the Superhub (in router mode) during flashing ?

Re: SuperHub & TP Link TL-WR1043ND Router

Well the e4200 is a much better router than the 1043nd so if you have it definitely use that! You can install dd-wrt on it too I believe.

The reason for clearing the nvram is to make the device clean after the install of the new firmware.

Don't erase NVRAM.

DON'T

OK, i'll try it, then if that's successful, i'll have a go with dd-wrt on the TL-WR1043ND to use it as a wireless repeater, might be asking you formore help on that tho, ok?

Because if you don't know what you're doing you'll end up bricking your router.

You've nudged me back onto the E4200, I went for the TP Link cos it has detachable external aerials, def installing the E4200 with SH in modem, E4200 has an iPhone app, Cisco Connect, which should be handy, VM just installed a 1TB TiVo, that has a app I can set it with as well, dead handy !

Re: SuperHub & TP Link TL-WR1043ND Router

The e4200 is in another league of routers to the wr1043nd so smart choice to use it ;) that said the tp link is a good wee router for the price and compared to the SHUB well :P

Jumping, read thru the guide on SamiuxBlog, which says, and I quote -
"The current version of DD-WRT at the time of this writing for this router is V24 preSPs2 r14144.

If you are the first time to flash the router (not upgrading), download the file "factory-to-ddwrt.bin". If you are upgrading the DD-WRT of this router, download the file "tl-wr1043nd-webflash.bin" instead. IF YOU WANT TO UPGRADE TO NEWER VERSION OF DD-WRT, THIS TUTORIAL IS USELESS!"

Wanting to install latest stable version, will that guide be ok using the second link you provide to download the files ?
The guide was easy to understand.

I have the TL-WR1043ND and it worked perfectly straight out of the box, connected to the SH in modem mode rock solid 60Mb and excellent wireless signal all over the house and down the garden - brilliant.

Thanks spark, now got my SH in modem mode, using the E4200 as router, which seems to be very stable, looking into installing dd-wrt on my TL-WR1043ND, to use it as a wireless repeater with USB port, to improve wifi coverage, which I'm a little apprehensive about going for the first time. I have fitted my TL-WR1043ND with better aerials which does make it excellent, you're right.
Your TL-WR1043ND on stock TP Link firmware ?

There are two files here:

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/Brai...k_tl-wr1043nd/
  • factory-to-ddwrt.bin - This is the file to use to flash from the stock firmware.
  • tl-wr1043nd-webflash.bin - This is the file to upgrade a WR1043ND that already has dd-wrt running on it as far as I'm aware.

I've just bought this router and used the factory-to-ddwrt file and all went fine... I therefore haven't needed to upgrade (or downgrade) the build so it's worth a hunt on Google for recommendations regarding resetting to factory defaults and/or clearing nvram when you change versions.

Thanks Ferret, how did you put dd-wrt on your TP link ?*
I'd like to use mine as a wireless repeater, which dd-wrt adds, instead of trying to set it up as router, can I just connect it to my PC by Ethernet cable and install dd-wrt that way, how did you install yours ?

Hi,

First stage, as you say - Connect the PC to the router via an ethernet cable (*Not* wireless)

From the original TP-Link stock firmware you just need to download the factory-to-ddwrt.bin file and then go into the firmware upgrade menu on the router web GUI. Select the downloaded dd-wrt image and hit go...

The router should then reboot running DD-WRT...

I'm using mine behind a VMNG300 as the main router and I wanted to use the VPN capabilities of DD-WRT (I haven't actually set it up yet though!).

Sorry been away on hols...yeah you can use it to flash newer version I flashed a much newer version than what was mentioned in the blog. You need to use the factory- bin file if you are still using the original TP-Link firmware the other version is if you already have DD-WRT installed you use the web flash version to upgrade to the newer version of DD-WRT.

Thanks Jumping, I'd forgotten about starting it thru th TP Link interface, good idea, yeh, I've read about the factory to dd-wrt bin file, then the matching dd-wrt f/w, I'll try that ASAP, just reading up on 30/30/30 reset n this telnet thing, did you have to do that ?
