Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
I know that a lot of people aren't fans of the super hub, but I am not here slamming it as I don't think it is a problem with the hub itself, i think it may be something else.
For the last few days of an evening after downloading large amounts of data using Bit-torrent i.e. 70GB, I keep losing my internet connection. I need to turn my super-hub on and off again, but it will keep losing the connection. I have noticed that if I exit Bit-torrent then I don't lose my connection, but I am not sure whether this is just a coincidence. Is this because of the amount of data I am downloading using Bit-torrent and my super-hub is turning off the connection on purpose or is this something else? Does anyone have any answers? |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
There's another fairly current thread on precisely this already. In that case the Superhub was in modem mode making it a little puzzling as apparently the only change was from a modem to the Superhub with the same router.
In your case I'd guess that the most likely problem is the number of connections you are running your client on is exceeding the internal connection table in the hub and causing it to hang. Look in the torrent client settings and reduce the maximum connections. I can't suggest a number as I don't run either torrents or the Superhub but I'd suggest even the Superhub must be able to cope with a hundred or so connections. It's not the number of torrents it's the number of connections...

i don't think it is bit torrent as it was only downloading at about 12 Mbs, and I have before today had 6 downloading at about 10 Mbs. I called VM and they said that they couldn't find anything wrong with my router or the network, but if it happens again then i shouldn't reset the router and give them a call. |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Each torrent download can have hundreds of connections open. Speed is irrelevant. It is the number of open connections.
Just try a quick google and you'll find the same advice I've given you hundreds of times over. If you want to ignore it fine - just keep rebooting your Supehub or if you really want to waste your time call VM with it hung - pound to a penny the next agent will start his script off with please reboot your Superhub. Have you even looked at the other thread here which linked to? |

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
The Superhub even in modem mode still performs >layer-3 (IP and connection orientated) functions.
As did the old VMNG300 modem which used to crash in the same manner. My bet goes on yet another firmware bug that causes the Superhub to crash under load. |

In this one it's just the Superhub and the only thing in question is if there is anything that can be done to stop it crashing. As the original post says it's when running torrents then the obvious answer is to reduce the maximum connections the torrent client can use. If it isn't torrents than all bets are off as anybody with a Superhub on VM is stuck with it and the only way to escape it is to leave VM. |

I have spoken to VM and they are sending me a new super hub out, they also suggested doing a hard reset as it may be a firmware issue. ---------- Post added at 18:33 ---------- Previous post was at 18:30 ---------- How would you know when the last firmware update was installed on the shub? |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
The superhub will fall over if you try to torrent with the firewall switched on.

192.168.100.1
advanced settings below the 3 boxes services ----------------------- or do the proper thing and buy a router and stick the SH into modem mode. a simple d link 615 on ebay for a tenna will do nicely. firewall on! |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Hi thenry
Sorry to crash the thread! I'm having the same problems - as it appears is almost everyone with one of these shoddy "super" hubs (oh the irony!). Using a dlink 615 seems a good plan. I'm just looking on ebay and there appear to be D2 versions and D4 versions. I'm not very tech savvy and wondered if you might know the difference, and whether both are likely to be pretty much plug-and-play with the hub once I've dropped it in to modem mode? Thanks very much for your help :) Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
D4 being the latest updated batch manufactured by DLink
everyones SuperHub firmware will be upgraded next week to the new firmware being tested right now. you probably wont get that router before the new firmwares pushed but its still a nice solid 2.4GHz router to have about. for anything more flashy go for Asus or Linksys highend simultaneous dual band routers |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks for such a quick response!
Are you saying the the new firmware for the superhub will stop either version of dlink from working with it? Or just that it's worth waiting to see if the update fixes things? I don't suppose there's any indication if this new SH firmware is likely to fix the current issues around torrents and wireless connections is there? Wishful thinking most likely! Thanks again Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
the new firmware still has modem mode. you can still go about using your own choice of router if you wish.
with regards to the new firmware in short... its a MASSIVE improvement. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...t-was-r35.html |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks thenry. Sounds like it's worth hanging fire. I've scanned over the linked topic, but can't see reference to the problem of torrents/overloading causing frequent crashes. Do you know if that's being addressed?
Really sorry to use you as a Virgin Support Service, but this is the most help (and sense) I've had out of anyone in weeks! Last night they told me to let my superhub "settle in for a few days" before calling back!! And also told me that a recurrent fault on my V+ HD box where deleted programs return was an area fault!! I'm not IT savvy, but I'm also not an idiot. Needless to say I formatted the HD on the box and that problem is now resolved! Thanks again for all your help. Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
torrents are fine. theres services within the web intereface like now you can toy with if it plays up.. IP flood and all that. firewall set to low does a decent job. setting it to medium/high blocks safe programs. clarity on the firewall needs to be made. wifi upped its game. people posting 100meg wifi results in the beta forum.

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Sounds promising, thanks. Looks like I'm making do with pretty much no internet for a week or so until I find out if it helps!
Cheers Mark ---------- Post added at 11:49 ---------- Previous post was at 11:48 ---------- Oh, one more thing. If my PCs are firewalled, does it matter if I turn the firewall on the hub off? That may be a really dumb question I know!! |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
if you live in or near Crawley ill sell you a 615 today.
firewall.. no and yes. the hardware firewall acts as a extra barier. ideally itshould be on but if your having trouble with it then disable. |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks for the offer - I live in Sheffield though so it'd be a bit of a trek!
I don't really know if it's the firewall causing any of the problems but might try turning it off and seeing if it helps any. Thanks for all your help, Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
your welcome. good luck.

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
It is the superhub firewall that causes torrent problems.
Yet another superhub feature that doesn't work as it should. Switch it off along with IP Flood Protection. You will still be protected by NAT and your software firewall. If you still get problems try switching off the software firewall as well. As has been already stated, modem mode and a decent router is the only sure method of solving superhub related issues. |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks for that Mick, I'll try doing that when I get back from work - do take it that you're not expecting miracles from the firmware upgrade then?
Cheers, Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Torrents work fine if you switch off the Shub firewall. The R36 firmware is a massive improvement.

So yes you are right. I am not expecting miracles from any firmware upgrade after all you can't polish a "you know what" can you. VM have been polishing it for years now and it's still carp and probably always will be. :D |
Same wireless problem even with Dlink router
Hi guys
Well, my Dlink DIR615 router came today. I've set it up and switched the superhub to modem mode. I have the same problem as before though - wired is fine, laptop with built in wireless is fine, as are smart phones, but the PC upstairs running the Virgin N wireless adapter can find the router, says there's a two-bar signal but can't find an internet connection. Occasionally it will for a few seconds, then reverts back to limited connectivity. Pretty much at my wits end with this. Can anyone offer any further advice? Any router settings that might help (doubtful I guess given that the other devices work fine)? Cheers, Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Get inSSIDer, do a scan, take a screenshot and post it.
|
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks for the reply. I've actually just tried shifting the whole pc downstairs to test and it found a connection fine. So looks like it's a signal strength issue. Is the inSIDDer scan going to be any use for that? Any way to significantly boost the signal without shelling out for yet more equipment? Thanks for all your help, Mark

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
It'll tell you what the problem is. So yes.

Hi again
Here's the screen grab. I'm the bottom connection on here. Not sure what the other one is. Thanks very much - I really don't understand all this stuff very well so realy appreciate your help! Mark |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Anybody? :-(

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Your signal isn't that weak, but from the mini time graph seems to be fluctuating and getting a lot worse in places. The "dongle" is a Netgear WNDA3200 which is by no means a bad device and should be able to maintain a decent connection at those signal levels.
You are running 300Mbps mode in 2.4Ghz which isn't really a good idea, especially when it's directly overlapping someone else's router. I'd put it into 20Mhz-only and channel 1 or 13. |
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks for the reply. I've put it on channel 13. Re: the 300mbps part, I've no idea where I change this. I found an option under advanced wireless called 'bandwidth', which I've changed from '20/40mhz(auto)' to '20mhz'. Is that all I need to do, or is there another setting somewhere that I'm missing? Thanks again, Mark
|
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
That's it. Might help a bit, might not. Signal strength, as I say, doesn't look weak enough to be a problem but if it does fluctuate a lot then moving it around might help.
|
Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?
Thanks for the help, but it's not working still - it does (sometimes) work if I move the router around downstairs, but due to the location of the superhub restricting where I can situate the router I can't leave it where I get a signal.
So I've bought these, and hope 30 quid is going to be worth it just to stop me throwing the PC through the window: http://www.ebuyer.com/263575-tp-link...roduct-reviews Thanks again, Mark |
