Thinking of Getting a Smartphone

3 are doing a samgsung gallaxy 2 with 500 mins and 5000 texts and unlimited data for £25 a month would prefer to stay with Virgin though and they don't even have to beat this deal just get pretty close to it.

if it's the unlimited data you want, virgin can't get any where near this offer

Choose a phone that has a decent battery or you will find yourself forever charging it up.

There is a fair usage policy but as long as you don't take the pee I think it'll be ok. Heard terrible things about 3's service, mind you it was a long time ago now...

I believe 3 have come on a long way over the last couple of years.
I think with the S3 due out in the next few weeks, you may get a better deal on the S2 if you hold out a little while longer.

That seems to be a good deal, is it a 2 year contract?

I've got the S2, and the battery is pretty good considering how much I use it throughout a full day. If the battery dies, I just replace it with one of the batteries I bought from eBay, they're really cheap and last just as long as the original.

Cheers, that's interesting they did seem pretty certain that the deal on offer was only till the end of the month, might try and push them a tiny bit harder.

Bound to be...

Virgin's deal is almost the same but the data is limited to 1gb. I use mine regularly, the closest I ever came to going over that was when I watched three live football matches in their entirety during the course of a month on top of my regular general use. I don't know how you intend to use your new 'phone, but I suspect you won't need unlimited data.

Oh I think he will need the data. ;)

Re: Thinking of Getting a Smartphone

VM had an offer for a while where you could increase the monthly data to 5Gb for only £5 a month extra. Not sure if they still offer it, but I have it and its very handy!

TheDaddy 01-05-2012 06:58

Re: Thinking of Getting a Smartphone

Looked at VM and for an extra £5 you can have 1000 extra mins, it's a good deal but then so is unlimited data, going to visit both shops today and see who offers the better deal.

Went to 3 shop got the Gallaxy II with 2000 mins 5000 texts and unlimited data (the fair usage is 80g a month  ) for £29 a month, didn't go to Virgin but on the way back home they sent me a text giving me what they called a reason to stay, sadly what they offered didn't even match the deal I was already on with them :(

With great power, comes great power consumption.

Old dumbphones only made calls and texts - smartphones are "always on", and use power-hungry apps; you are comparing apples with fruit-baskets....

Very true. Also with great power comes great responsibility (or at least it used to) :)

With current battery technology I'm not sure that much can be done to extend the time they last. I use Li-Po batteries for my model heli but they are a touch unstable for devices such as mobiles, laptops etc.

Mmmmmm.

You seem to be putting together a circular argument which is only valid if one accepts your proposition of "the profit hungry replacement battery industry". Surely these people would need to be in cahoots with the smartphone manufacturers, since they are, as their name states, the "replacement battery" industry...

I have had smartphones since the iPaq and Palm Treo, and whilst none of them were particularly good on battery life (due to the points mentioned before), none of them ever needed replacement batteries; my teams now supply around 850 smartphones to our internal customers, and we have very few battery replacement requirements (spare chargers, yes....).

Re: Thinking of Getting a Smartphone

The spare chargers aspect is probably due to people losing them or forgetting to pick them up. That being said though, my wife's Blackberry charger died after 2 weeks.

The battery seems pretty good touch wood, I have to charge it every day but I'm always on it and watch a lot of stuff on it to

Just to add to this thread i moved to three for our main mobile from virgin,if you have a need for mobile broadband get a phone that can tether to you laptop or whatever by creating its own wifi hot spot or via usb and get it on the one plan, that way you are allowed to tether and get according to 3 unlimited data with no fair use policy.
Been on it now for 9 months and until Saturday i did all my surfing and downloading via it with no data limit problems, the only thing they say they dont allow is peer to peer file sharing or commercial use.

The thing woth smartphones is that they are computers first, phones second.

I always take my charge to work and even bought one for the car.

I have to charge it daily, sometime during heavy use twicw or more.
