5:57pm UK, Thursday April 05, 2012

Around 60 firefighters have been tackling a large blaze in a goods yard underneath electricity lines in east London, which left tens of thousands of people without power.

Twelve fire engines were at the scene in Canning Town where a warehouse, pallet yard and scrapyard were alight.
The London Fire Brigade said there were no reports of injuries.
UK Power Networks said 88,000 customers were left without power because of the blaze in Ives Road, near Bidder Street.
It said all power supplies had been restored just over an hour later.
A spokesman said: "We apologise to customers in east London who suffered a power cut today when a fire in Canning Town, which was not on our equipment, damaged overhead power lines.
"UK Power Networks engineers restored supplies to all customers within an hour and 10 minutes." [more]
I hope all you guys are ok!!!

That's a bit churlish, he was only expressing his concern.

What can you expect from a provincial though... ;)

10's of thousands in the North had no electricity because of the snow, where's the concern for that?

Or perhaps because it didn't happen in the butthole of the country no one cares?

OH WOW, they were all without power for 1 hour and 10 minutes... OMG...how did they survive!!!! I also hope that the fire didn't cause global warming within East London otherwise they'll have to postpone the Olympics until the next ice age!!

Sorry but total non-event  or is it a case of the colonies still thinking that London is the same as in 1666 ??

We in the colonies are fully aware that Heathrow didn't get a third terminal until later than that;) There's probably been other changes. I'm not sure if you can still buy a hotel in Mayfair for £200

This thread is a little pointless, IMO. The power cut had no impact on most of the country. It didn't even have any impact on most of London.

Re: Thousands Without Power After London Fire

It's a complete non-story. This sort of thing happens to more people around the UK and it doesn't make anywhere near the front page of the nationals. It's like the media thinks that if it happens to London, it's somehow more newsworthy.

The fire added to it

I have been a Londoner for 60 years, and l am totally mystified that there has not been another great fire of London, with all the crap you see on the London streets and back alleys from shop's.

For many years l delivered to the many shops of London, and the rubbish that you saw piling up in the alleys and fronts is beyond me.

I see no moderating posts as they would be in bold so they are posting here as forum members offering an opinion on a non event that was reported simply because it happened in our countries capital city, similar issues have occurred elsewhere but are only reported locally.;)

No problem at all it was a serious fire but all seems fine down there now, as I said above other similar incidents around the country are usually not reported in the media due to them being outside of London.

Don't worry about it ,a very small number of people where without power for a very short amount of time in a very small area of london .Of course if the same outage had happened anywhere else in the UK it would have took about 3 days to fix ;)

That's because we have a far more efficient fire service than we had back then, and not so many timber framed buildings.

On a serious note, if you see what you believe is a fire risk (especially if it could block an escape route), then report it to the fire service. And they will act on it very quickly.

And yes it probably could happen again. Scrap yard fires are actually quite common, due to the nature of what they do. So unless the electricity company reroute the cables, then there is a good chance that it will happen again.

I'm more concerned about the high risk of brush fires this year with the drought conditions down here in the south. We are surrounded by MOD heathland here and it will burn very well being tinder dry.

Don't worry, I'm sure the raid will be back in time for summer, as usual.

Excuse me if I can't laugh. The last time we had brush fires locally it was a miserable experience because it came within metres of local homes and those of us a half mile away were choking with the smoke..:(
