New Modem

My VMNG300v2 has bit the dust no power at all from it, it's just dead. So I just had the super Hub activated that I already had in my cupboard form when I had 100meg installed about 8 months ago.

Fingers crossed I get no problems from it...

Wish me luck.

Re: New Modem

i would say it is a bit 50/50 but if you havent done so already you want to bang it into modem mode. If you had the VMNG300 before you would have had your own router and whatever you have got now is going to be more reliable than the shub

borrissey 29-03-2012 10:14

I think I'll try it out as a router at first to see how it goes. Then if it's no good put it into modem only mode and connect up Linksys E2000 router.

I'll be running 2 iPhones, iPad, laptop and PS Vita via wireless. Then with home plugs 2 PS3s, TV and 2 Blu ray players.

If you already have the Linksys I wouldnt run the superhub in router mode at all the Linksys will be superior to it as a router.

it's not very often I want to cry dude but this is one of those occasions. You have got a great router which is ideally suited for your setup and you are ditching it for something that is going to fall apart just by looking at your ipad. The shub simply cant handle multiple devices on different platforms on different connections methods. If you had the shub to start off with and came on to the forum moaning it wouldnt work the first thing I would have said to you is bang it in modem mode and get yourself a linksys router, but you have already got one. Don't do things backwards :bsmack:

Ha Ha just put it into modem mode and Linksys E2000 is up and running.

What's the super hub like as a modem then?

90% modem and 10% not :) It isnt that bad, it should defo mitigate nearly all of your potential problems. You can sit back happy now knowing that all your routing needs are being expertly handled by Linksys (they are going to pay me later)

borrissey 29-03-2012 20:26

Got another VMNG300 :) My mate had a spare one.

I'm happy now VMNG300 and Linksys E2000. :)

Just had modem activated, guy also said on phone VMNG300 can only do 92meg lol. Speed test it did 100 ;)

boroboi 29-03-2012 21:26

Re: New Modem

Not to mention that the SuperHub actually increases jitter which is bad for gamers. Modem mode is a lot better and the VMNG300 it's even more slightly reduced from what i can gather. That can only go so far though.

yup, look at the link and see how they couldnt care less. I dont think they are interested in improving modem mode at all because they want everyone to use it as a router.

can it not be improved in both modes General?

well the modem software is affecting both modem and router mode, so its a big issue imo

plus I sent the link to Mark_Wilkin in a PM and he has definitely read it as there was a read receipt

Yup, but i meant that i cant see them doing a firmware update to fix the shub in modem mode. i can see them being bias and doing it to improve router mode to try and encourage people to go back to it

Theres light at the end of the tunnel me thinks. VM have somewhat uncluttered the path their on given a little pressure to do so, its all in the best interest anyway!! Anywho I do think they will improve modem functionality.

I'm having connection troubles with Router, I've got my router running to pc from router port 1 with an ethernet cable, the connection keeps dropping though.

It's a linksys E2000 with VMNG300

Jumping 30-03-2012 16:14

Re: New Modem

Is it the connection to the linksys thats not working?? Or is your modem disconnecting?

borrissey 30-03-2012 18:37

Re: New Modem

Seems to be working fine now PC don't know whats changed but it's all good.

Home plug in living room is running a bit slow but that could be wiring and distance.

General Maximus 30-03-2012 19:19

Re: New Modem

you can see if you have got a connection with your router and going to the default ip address of 192.168.1.1 and seeing if it has got an external ip (I think mine startd with 82. without checking). Secondly, you can go to 192.168.100.1 and have a look at the modem config and see if it has locked onto the channels etc. I very much doubt any problems you have will be router related because Linksys are awesome :cleader:

borrissey 30-03-2012 23:19

All sorted now hopefully :)

borrissey 31-03-2012 10:56

Damn!! Connection to PC is playing up again this morning, server not found in web browser.

But that little pic of the monitor and Ethernet lead in bottom right of screen says Internet access. Now and then the yellow icon is on there meaning no Internet access.

It's very frustrating.

But wireless is still working tried it on my iPhone. Seems to be the PC that's the problem connection is dropping in and out a lot.

I haven't got a clue what to do!!

General Maximus 31-03-2012 13:26

Re: New Modem

Are you sure your phone is using wifu and not reverted to 3g when it lost it's connection? What are the lights on the modem and router doing?

borrissey 31-03-2012 14:05

No wifi signal was up.

After pc had been on about 5 minutes it started working, seems like it takes a few minutes to warm up, very strange.

The 2 Ethernet lights were light up green. Plus the other lights for Internet, wifi and power.

Yep that correct! I believe that VMNG300 Modem can do 120 Meg no problem

VMNG300 connected to Netgear DGND3700 will be in 1Gb LAN network. And the wi-fi (300+300Mbps) pretty good 104 Meg better than superhub.

So if everyone gets 8 VMNG300 will not work. How many channels can it do.

Is that why they want people off the VMNG300 eventually?

I believe the VMNG300 can only do 4 down stream channels, so yes that is why it won't work.

VM need to get a new modem or superhub then before they go over to 8 channels in all areas.

They have no need to do that the Superhub is ok for most people especially now you can put it in modem only mode and use a router.

Do you mean modem only mode is going to switch off wi-fi and use my router as the wi-fi instead ? Like superhub (modem only) via my Netgear Router DGND3700 for 300+300Mbps Wi-Fi.

You can select modem only mode in the Superhub, this will allow you to use your own router for wifi.

Re: New Modem

All areas should be going to 8 channels sooner or later, and probably 2 upstreams, the superhub will lock onto all 8 down and 3 up, whereas the VMNG300 will only lock onto 4 of the available downstreams, and both of the 2 upstreams, and will handle 120mb just fine, just less efficient load balancing across the channels

Re: New Modem

meaning inconsistent speeds

craigj2k12 02-04-2012 18:33

Re: New Modem

I doubt you would notice a difference, infact 4 channels on the VMNG will probably outperform the superhub for browsing and everyday use. You will only notice the speed drop in more congested areas where there is a severe amount of downstream congestion (which there shouldnt be anyway) and if there was, the superhub would double its effects by buffering all those packets, so its a win win situation keeping the VMNG really

thenry 02-04-2012 18:35

I thought the VMNG turned into a glitchball once more channels got pushed

Why are they fine when he's here then jump up an hour after he's left? When he comes they might be fine again!

Very annoying!!

cool, ideally your power levels should be between +/-3. My downstream snr is 38 and upstream 48. I always like to use mine as an example because my connection has always been perfect (shub notwithstanding)

Don't let him go though till you have tested your tv and internet connection and are happy everything is working.

The problem is the levels have been fine when other techs left, but then they change they go up and down. On both TV and BB.

Can I make him sit with me and watch TV and play FIFA online for a few hours? :)

I've been onto head office and I've got a women called tracey over seeing it all and some guy that phoned me today also. He's going to phone me when the Techs here tomorrow and a few hours after he's left.

I really hope it gets sorted, just want to enjoy the services I pay for.

Yeah they said they would look at that they know about it, didn't guarantee thye would fit a new box though. Won't they be renewing the green boxes during the double speed roll out?

Re: New Modem

They were doing a cabinet cleanup operation, but I dont know whether thats still going, and I doubt it would affect a small thing like that, I presume you live in a secluded estate and that cab serves only a few houses?

Re: New Modem

No I live in a avenue which is quite long about 40 houses, then streets going of it. They seem to have two of these small green boxes in each street I don't think there's any of them in the avenue I live in though. There's a big main one, on the bottom of the street down from me.

I knew I was on the right thread when I saw this thread had Five pages!

We are getting V/M TV & phone package hooked up tomorrow, (already have V/M Internet) and I have already been warned about this new Hub by our lad, who got the new one a couple of weeks ago?

He has had nothing but problems with, as has his brother who lives 8 miles away?

I was hoping to get V/M to allow me to keep my current Modem, until they get this new one sorted out? But it seems they wont do that, so I will probably finish up with the same rubbish router that our lads have???

Aye! I think that's what our lad was on about, as he told me to make sure they don't take my existing Router away with them.

I will ask him if he can be here when the V/M folk come, as he knows all about this techie stuff, better then I do. Thanks for that tip, much appreciated.;)

why? They can be wherever you want them to be. Any device connected to the router can be up to 100m away from it so it could be down the street for all we care. If you got a couple of switches in on it you could link all your neighbours together :)

Latest power levels.

Can someone explain to me about the levels to going up and down does it allways happen is it normal? Does it affect your service connection.

Re: New Modem

are your TiVo's doing the same? if the upstream power is crawling up then disconnecting then its too high, but to me looks like a fault, going from 48 to 55.

Do you know where you cabinet is? is it open or have visible damage, or has it recently been refurbished? It could be that an amplifier has been replaced hence your power levels going up, noone can really tell apart from a VM engineer

borrissey 07-04-2012 00:07

Yeah TiVo upstairs comes off the same splitter as Internet so super hub levels are exactly the same as TiVo. Super hub is upstairs. The TiVo downstairs is going up from 44 to 51. So far I haven't had any disconnects on internet or break up on TV channels. Just the levels are pushing borderline just checked TiVo upstairs and it's 55. I also have a V box downstairs haven't checked those levels though, but no break up of channels.

I've got a powered amplifier installed plugged into electrical socket in living room.

The levels through the day are going up and down.

Posted a picture of my VM cab on page 5 it's in bad shape. There being upgraded this month the cabs according to VM and some cabs have been upgraded in Newport. Tech said the cab door won't close properly because it's too full of wires and outdated. He also said all the connections are water proof. I've reported the box to VM.

Re: New Modem

1 Attachment(s)
no idea really, is the small cabinet fed from a bigger one? Ive attached a picture of my cabinet, the drop cable from my house goes directly to the cabinet, so I have no idea what your small cab is. It must stem from another cabinet, but I dont know whether its just a splitter or anything more??

It sounds to me like the engineer putting the plug in amplifier was a bit of a bodged job, to cover up a more serious equipment fault somewhere in a local cab, whether thats aged, or damaged or what, I dont know. Maybe if you could get a photo of the inside of the tiny cab that may shed some light on what the setup is and maybe shine more light on your issue. Sorry I couldnt be more of a help

borrissey 07-04-2012 09:30

Checked TiVo upstairs before I left house at 9am was back down to 47.

There's a lot of these small cabs dotted around the streets by me, then there's one main big cabinet about a 2, 3 minute walk from my house (looks like that one in your pic Craig)

I haven't experienced any problems yet with disconnects or break up on TV channels. Just hope it's all good now and maybe levels going up and down will be sorted when they upgradethe cabs. My area is due the speed upgrade in July this year.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Yeah I guess still no disconnections was a slight break up on sky movies HD the other day but didn't come to anything.

Hopefully these changing power levels will be sorted when cabs are upgraded.

HD channels have started breaking up again today :( It's happening now with Thor on Sky Movies Premier HD. It was happening earlier this morning as well on sky sports HD 1.

They have been fine the last couple of days watched all the master golf on Sky Sports HD 1 no problem at all.

Did you check your levels when it was breaking up? When I had issues with picture & broadband it was always when the levels dropped very low.

I have just literally finished watching Thor, great movie. I love his accent. I can't wait for The Avengers to come out.

The levels aren't stable they jump all over the place they go from 47 to 56 in a few minutes. Then from 56 to 47 again in minutes. This is happening all the time.

They change a lot.

Not so good, touchwood wood after they fitted an active splitter for me downstairs mine been fine and Tivo box and superhub (in modem mode) been happy and working ok with no break up of signal or disconnects of the broadband.

Hopefully you will get an engineer out and fit one for you and sort it out for you.

borrissey 10-04-2012 21:24

I had 3 techs out last week.

They fitted a powered splitter a few months ago. There must be a fault somewhere. I'm no expert but maybe I need a re wire to my house or there's a fault in the cab that feeds my house.

The break up is happening on both my TiVo boxes.
