you just need a amp/speaker system with either a HDMI passthrough or a optical connection.

have a look at RicherSounds: http://www.richersounds.com/products...eaker-packages

You'll also need an AV amp with the speakers in that link

At 50 pounds over budget, this is both amp and speakers. There could be other options; I found that after a very quick look and don't know what it sounds like

Yes, true... :)

I'm not sure if you can get anything decent for under £150 though.

Yeah, that's not bad for the price :tu:

At that budget level, a stereo amp and 2 speakers would probably give better sound, but Tivo doesn't have stereo out does it? You may be able to connect your TV to a stereo amp, which should work just as well, but some TV's only have optical out now, so it will depend on your TV.

Re: Cinema Sound

You can pick up a DVD 5.1 home theater system for that kind of money. So long as it has an optical connection you'll be fine. Works a treat for me just pass the sound from the TiVo through the home theater. Simple.

It's surprising the sound quality you can get from modern speakers, subwoofer and simple amp. OK, so you might notice a difference if placing a £1000 system against that one, but I suspect most users would be more than happy. Remember that if you are using some of the HD channels that carry the 5.1 sound signals then the benefits of the full wrap around can only be properly reproduced with surround sound setups. If I've paid out for HD, I want to reap the benefits of all the available effects.

I agree it's a trade off of surround sound against better quality sound but, on a budget, I'd prefer better sound quality from just two speakers. The only way is to compare a stereo system and 5.1 system for 150ish pounds and see which the OP prefers. There is no right and wrong, it's personal preference.

thanks for the info. Got a Blu ray player so the DVD Cinema Systems are a bit redundant for me...just want the speakers.

borrissey 29-02-2012 17:13

You'll still need a surround sound amp 5 speakers and an optional amp.

Why not go for a cinema amp and 3 front speakers fronts left & right abd centre speakers to start off and add then add surround speakers and sub if you want down the line.

You can then also connect your Blu ray player to your new amp.

The best place for advice on this is AVForums

There is an 'all in one' section which covers amp/speaker combo units and you can also look in the separate 'AV Amplifiers and recievers' section and 'speakers' section as people often ask for advice on good amp and speaker pairings in these latter two sections.

They also have a section for stereo amps.

I got a set of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harman-Kardo...0552246&sr=8-1 and am very impressed by them. Connected by 3.5mm to the headphone socket, headphone volume on telly turned to max, speakers turned to max and am able to control volume using TiVo remote.

borrissey 29-02-2012 23:20

Sorry meant optional subwoofer

Hey everyone! i was just wandering about something, basically I've built a custom home cinema (spent a fair bit of money i might add) but i now need some quality speakers/subwoofers etc. i have a budget of around 2 - 2,500 but i want to make sure i get a quality product that isn't going to blow out when i'm enjoying a film or saving the world while playing Call of Duty on my xbox! haha. so far i have had a look at these home cinema speakers and they have been shortlisted as a potential, but if anyone else has any other ideas before i spend a SMALL fortune on some new kit please do let me know, as saving money on this purchase would also be a bonus!

cheers :)

Re: Cinema Sound

The best speakers are not in that price range, I've been told that top spec Lynn speaker are over £50,000 :D

Mad money.

What you need to go to somewhere like richer sounds and test them, as some speakers are crap and expensive crap.

Re: Cinema Sound

50 grand :0 haha, that's a little out of my price range, if i had a spare 50k i would get a second hand Ferrari...haha

thanks i might have to do that :)

The speakers you choose wii depend on a lot of things. You need to match them to your amp both tonally and quality wise. For example you would normally have a 5.1 speaker set costing two to three times the cost of the amp. A £500 amp is not going to get the best out of speakers costing £3000, as higher quality speakers need an amp with better quality components to drive them correctly, so you would probably be wasting your money spending so much on speakers for a £500 amp.

Also, AV amps can be tonally different, and it's common practice to match amp and speaker pairings. For example, I have a Yamaha RX-V1900 amp, which is regarded as tonally warm sounding, so I have it paired with some Monitor Audio RS8s speakers which are tonally bright sounding and complement the amp.

I'd spend some time on the www.avforums.com and then go to a proper dealer who can demo, not Richersounds, who are mainly box shifters these days.

Re: Cinema Sound

thanks for that! i didn't take in to account the pairing up as you mentioned! mainly because i wasn't fully aware that this was the thing to do! i'm glad i asked now haha cheers for that, ill spend a bit of time on the AVforum

thanks again

I would just like to mention that if you get an AV amp of home cinema system and if they have a wireless connection to the speakers make sure that you dont have any energy lights bulbs near the appliance as the signal may well be interfered with.

I think people are better off with wired speakers if quality of sound is the most important. If you can get good quality wireless speakers, you would be paying a large price premium for the wireless aspect.

I have a Yamaha amp connected via an optical cable, but I get a definate delay on the sound from the picture, which makes it impossible to use. Any suggestions on rectifying this??

My bedroom yamaha rx-v1500 connects via optical and there is no sound delay. What is the model of your amp and what make of TV do you have? Also, are you connecting the optical direct from the Tivo to the amp (i.e, not taking the optical out from the TV). Does your amp have HDMI inputs?

Most amps have the facility to set an audio delay in order to rectify lip sync issues. What model is yours?

I was going to mention that, but he says that the sound is already delayed from the picture.

He did indeed, missed that point completely :erm:. My other thought was picture processing but again that goes out the window with the audio delayed already....

There was an issue with Tivo outputting the audio and video such that the audio was delayed and no amount of tinkering with your amp would fix this, it would obviously only make it worse. This used to drive me crazy but i haven't noticed the issue in quite a while, could it be this? Do you have the same issue with the Tivo connected directly to your TV for both audio and video?

there is loads on places online you can look, have you tried eBay or gumtree? they can be decent but a lot of the time can be hit and miss depending on your requirements and budgets, i use the same guys usually for anything i need, especially for fitting in wall speakers and stuff they might be worth checking out if you haven't sorted yourself out and depending on where your location is but like i said they are good for home cinema installation in London and the surrounding area. i hope that was of help to you

cheers
