Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

So, there are rumours on the net that ICS will make an official appearance on the SGS2 on or around 1st March.

As I am new to VM Mobile I'm not really sure on the stance they take on new firmware? Is the SGS2 under the mercy of VM and their own release schedules or will it pick up stock Samsung/Android firmware when it is released?

My previous experience of this was on the Vodafone network with Nokia phones and they were painfully slow at approving updates.

Stephen 20-02-2012 08:24

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

VM need to test the firmware before they release it.

Yes and its three days after my birthday so it will be interesting to see how good it is.:D

Yes my phone awaits it and also lets hope we don't get any problems with this new version.

It has been rolled out to sim free phones but those of us locked on to networks have to wait a bit longer.

It will be interesting, because as far as I can tell my SGS II is unbranded, even though I got it from a VM shop, so will see whether I can get it on Monday or not

Stephen 14-03-2012 12:15

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

It started to rollout to parts of Europe yesterday but the UK isn't due to get the update till at least next week, and thats only for unbranded handsets bought SIM free.

If it has any pre installed VM apps then I hate to be the bearer of the bummer and say its a VM iteration of the phone software and as such like all the other networks won't be rolling from the 19 the.

It's surprisingly Virgin free-only the network operator's name gives the game away.

---------- Post added at 08:19 ---------- Previous post was at 07:52 ----------

Further to that *#1234# gives you various information-apparently xeuk or xx means unbranded. Virgin have confirmed on the community forum that they'll be taking the software for testing once it's released in the UK, but it appears that you won't have to wait for that process if your phone is unbranded.

Well as I put in the main Google Android thread, I took the plunge and did the update via ODIN last night as KIES is very flakey on my computer.

Worked fine and still picked up Virgin correctly (rather than seeing it as T-Mobile)

Yup, but it got all UK stuff in it anyway - just followed the instructions here http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-pho...y-s2-50006766/

Also best bit is it seems to have got rid of the 'Fully charged' beep which has been annoying the hell out of me since I got the phone

My phones rooted so I had it for a while not an amazing update but worth it as the battery now seems alittle better, can't wait for the SG3 to make its apperance.

Has anyone else noticed any great improvements that I might have overlooked.

Does the upgrade do away with flash, and does that mean an end to playing embedded video in web pages? (excuse what is probably a really green question!)

Folks, does VM not need to test and "re-mould" the release before allowing it to our S2's? Im sure they have done this with other releases???
I too have rooted S2, but not ran a custom rom yet, but will bide my time a bit more for "official" VM release (hope its soon though) ;-)

I've researched this. You need to have kies installed on your computer, available on the Samsung site, connect your phone by usb, and it will tell you if there is a firmware update available.

And having done that I'm being told I have the latest firmware installed.

Viegin have to approve the firmware first, this could take months. I used Odin and got the updates when I wanted

Stephen 20-03-2012 09:13

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

I used Odin on Friday night and got the official European ICS release. So far its been great, love the new ICS font makes the screen a lot sharper looking.

However many people have found a major bug when using any 3rd party SMS app like, Go SMS, or Chomp SMS. Texts are being sent twice by the phone. Only way to currently solve it is remove the 3rd party apps and go back to the standard messing app :(

When the ICS upgrade becomes available to upgrade your GT-I9100 to ICS version, please upgrade your mobile via KIES 2.0 You can download KIES 2.0 from www.samsung.com

Note: If the customer tries to upgrade the mobile device SW from Ginger Bread to

That's a great link, thank Shane :)

From what I had found out there on other sites, these firmware codes are for the latest official UK Samsung S2 unbranded firmware, which others who did not purchase their handset through Virgin have.

PDA: I9100XWKI4
PHONE: I9100XXKI1
CSC: I9100XEUKH2

Yours are exactly the same as my SG2. So is it locked or unbranded?

If you dial *#1234# it shows you the firmware codes. Which from what I have found is the official unbranded Samsung UK firmware and if you dial *#7465625# it will show you the network lock state among others, if it is Off like mine then it isn't network lock either.

Pipster 20-03-2012 16:22

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

yep all off so unlocked. So we should be able to get the update when its releases then?

Because the UK one is official and won't void your warranty. Also if you put it on via ODIN, you'll have to put any further updates on that way as KIES then won't like your phone for firmware updates anymore

Firmwares don't invalidate the warranty from the manufacturer at all. Sure virgin might not support you if you flash with Odin but Samsung will honour their 2 year guarantee.

Dear Howard

Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance.

Samsung UK can confirm that the roll out of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from week commencing 19th March, however the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process.

If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

Kind regards

So are we any further foreword in finding out when an update will be available ?

The VM SGS2 is indeed "Sim Free" and "Network Free" so I dont think its an issue with Virgin, as the FW code has NO VM branding ???

As to whether all Virgin Samsung Galaxy S II's are unbranded or not will be picked up by the handset testing team on Monday as I'm not sure of this information and as stated in my post from the 4th page of this thread, I believe we need more transparency on updates, rather than just asking them and them responding in due course. This is also the latest over on the VM community forums from Krystal_E. I must say, Virgin's responses are pretty good IMO. If they are able to keep up this informative level of communication they will have some happy customers:

"Following my previous post (just copied below the line here to help), the handset testing team have agreed to proactively send us a spreadsheet with all updates in progress - when they send this etc is yet to be confirmed but I just wanted to let you all know there is some progress.

On the back of whether there are branded sg11 etc and where testing is when I know more I'll let you all know".

Yes that is very odd. And for releasing it to Three as well. Perhaps there have been problems reported with the versions they have released so they are holding off? Who knows! But then, that seems to be the problem at this stage, lack of any concrete information from Samsung.

That is very possible as it has shown at the SamMobile firmware page:

LP3 is O2's release. Txt bug fixed, better scrolling, faster & somewhat more refined than LP2 (just feels better all round)

Looks like ICS firmware is finally here for my SGS2 from Vodafone, just in the process of updating using KIES.

Thanks for info-I've been relying on the you mobile link posted earlier in this thread, but vodafone not confirmed on there yet so I'm going to hook up to kies in a minute to see if there's anything for me yet.

Are you using the latest version of Kies? This is the latest one...

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?

Yeah. Apparently the problem is that most of us on Virgin have unbranded handsets. Samsung have confirmed that the network branded phones will be updated first so that they can be sure the unbranded still work regardless of which network they're being used on. And to that end we're still waiting for t mobile...

Only found that out after my last post, but thought the info might be useful to some.

I've updated it, but the phone has become a bit unstable so I wouldn't be in a huge rush if you haven't managed it yet.
