Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
So, there are rumours on the net that ICS will make an official appearance on the SGS2 on or around 1st March.
As I am new to VM Mobile I'm not really sure on the stance they take on new firmware? Is the SGS2 under the mercy of VM and their own release schedules or will it pick up stock Samsung/Android firmware when it is released? My previous experience of this was on the Vodafone network with Nokia phones and they were painfully slow at approving updates. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
VM need to test the firmware before they release it.
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Samsung have announced it will arrive on March 15........My birthday!!!

It's being rolled out next Monday according to this http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/sams...arch-50007310/
But when will Virgin give it the green light? |

I flashed my phone using odin to 2.3.6 and thinking about doing it to ICS polish version, not sure if thats a bad idea or not
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
It has been rolled out to sim free phones but those of us locked on to networks have to wait a bit longer.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
It started to rollout to parts of Europe yesterday but the UK isn't due to get the update till at least next week, and thats only for unbranded handsets bought SIM free.
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
If it has any pre installed VM apps then I hate to be the bearer of the bummer and say its a VM iteration of the phone software and as such like all the other networks won't be rolling from the 19 the.

---------- Post added at 08:19 ---------- Previous post was at 07:52 ---------- Further to that *#1234# gives you various information-apparently xeuk or xx means unbranded. Virgin have confirmed on the community forum that they'll be taking the software for testing once it's released in the UK, but it appears that you won't have to wait for that process if your phone is unbranded. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Well as I put in the main Google Android thread, I took the plunge and did the update via ODIN last night as KIES is very flakey on my computer.
Worked fine and still picked up Virgin correctly (rather than seeing it as T-Mobile) |

Also best bit is it seems to have got rid of the 'Fully charged' beep which has been annoying the hell out of me since I got the phone |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
My phones rooted so I had it for a while not an amazing update but worth it as the battery now seems alittle better, can't wait for the SG3 to make its apperance.
Has anyone else noticed any great improvements that I might have overlooked. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Are you on a stock ICS rom or the TouchWiz one?

Does the upgrade do away with flash, and does that mean an end to playing embedded video in web pages? (excuse what is probably a really green question!)

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Hopefully the UK version gets released today by Samsung. It seems my version numbers all point to a generic Samsung phone rather than a Virgin Mobile device. Has anyone received the official update for their Galaxy S2 yet?
I know, I'm very impatient! |

anyone got it yet,Doesnt seem to have been released as planned

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Folks, does VM not need to test and "re-mould" the release before allowing it to our S2's? Im sure they have done this with other releases???
I too have rooted S2, but not ran a custom rom yet, but will bide my time a bit more for "official" VM release (hope its soon though) ;-) |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
I just tried a software update but nothing yet. Are Virgin 'in talks' with Samsung? ;-)

Samsung don't seem to have released it yet

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Viegin have to approve the firmware first, this could take months. I used Odin and got the updates when I wanted
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
I used Odin on Friday night and got the official European ICS release. So far its been great, love the new ICS font makes the screen a lot sharper looking.
However many people have found a major bug when using any 3rd party SMS app like, Go SMS, or Chomp SMS. Texts are being sent twice by the phone. Only way to currently solve it is remove the 3rd party apps and go back to the standard messing app :( |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
BTW according to this http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/20/p...xy-s-ii-guide/ (and this PDF http://dash.coolsmartphone.com/wp-co...r-2.0.pptx.pdf)

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Three UK users are currently getting ICS. Like others I flashed the official Polish version using Odin on mine.
If you look here http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?p...00&r=1#regiona and scroll down you can see the releases as they come out. |

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Same CSC as mine, which too was from Virgin
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Oh dear, that doesn't fill me with much hope then.
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
From what I had found out there on other sites, these firmware codes are for the latest official UK Samsung S2 unbranded firmware, which others who did not purchase their handset through Virgin have.
PDA: I9100XWKI4 PHONE: I9100XXKI1 CSC: I9100XEUKH2 |

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
If you dial *#1234# it shows you the firmware codes. Which from what I have found is the official unbranded Samsung UK firmware and if you dial *#7465625# it will show you the network lock state among others, if it is Off like mine then it isn't network lock either.
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
yep all off so unlocked. So we should be able to get the update when its releases then?
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
If our handsets are truly unbranded then as soon as Samsung release the official UK rom via Kies then yes we will get it.
Fingers crossed! :D |

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Firmwares don't invalidate the warranty from the manufacturer at all. Sure virgin might not support you if you flash with Odin but Samsung will honour their 2 year guarantee.
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
emailed samsung reagarding the update,Here is the reply ----
Dear Howard Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance. Samsung UK can confirm that the roll out of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from week commencing 19th March, however the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process. If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help. Kind regards Adrian Online Support Team SAMSUNG Customer Support Centre |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Well that's as useful as a chocolate teapot. They are acting as if there is no such thing as an unbranded handset - that they are all network issued only
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
So are we any further foreword in finding out when an update will be available ?
The VM SGS2 is indeed "Sim Free" and "Network Free" so I dont think its an issue with Virgin, as the FW code has NO VM branding ??? Really annoying tho, knowing its "out there" and I cant get it |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
just what i thought,Very easy to blame network providers

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Wish they would hurry up, just got my new SGS2 and am itching to set it up and install my paid for apps but theres not much point in putting in the time and effort just for it to be wiped by a new FW upgrade.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
This is also the latest over on the VM community forums from Krystal_E. I must say, Virgin's responses are pretty good IMO. If they are able to keep up this informative level of communication they will have some happy customers:
"Following my previous post (just copied below the line here to help), the handset testing team have agreed to proactively send us a spreadsheet with all updates in progress - when they send this etc is yet to be confirmed but I just wanted to let you all know there is some progress. On the back of whether there are branded sg11 etc and where testing is when I know more I'll let you all know". |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Hmm, very strange, maybe Samsung UK are not happy with the bugs. Kies podcast app keeps force closing and Facebook app causes high CPU utilisation, maybe they're going to fix those bugs?
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Seems very odd that it would be release for Europe but then not for the UK.
Possibly regretting putting the Europe version on my phone now - may have to update again when it finally gets released |

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Thanks for info-I've been relying on the you mobile link posted earlier in this thread, but vodafone not confirmed on there yet so I'm going to hook up to kies in a minute to see if there's anything for me yet.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
1 Attachment(s)
Are you using the latest version of Kies? This is the latest one...
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Yeah. Apparently the problem is that most of us on Virgin have unbranded handsets. Samsung have confirmed that the network branded phones will be updated first so that they can be sure the unbranded still work regardless of which network they're being used on. And to that end we're still waiting for t mobile...
Only found that out after my last post, but thought the info might be useful to some. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
Mind started to update whilst in a orange area, stopped would take to long.will orange update work okay
|
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
The firmware upgrade is now available on KIES. Mine is upgrading now.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich?
I've updated it, but the phone has become a bit unstable so I wouldn't be in a huge rush if you haven't managed it yet.
