Looked at Apps
 

Bored last night so looked for perhaps the second time at the app`s. Sorry but why do they bother its a complete waste of time, slow, dull, in fact complete rubbish. Next time I will get a can of paint out,put some on a paper & watch it dry. Its got to be better than this.:(

Tivo is the future.More chance of betamax making a come back .You must be kidding.
The only thing I thank the Tivo for, is a price drop.:cool: No wonder they give them away / pay me to take one,its the only way to shift this overrated PVR. Yes it does the job ( just) but worth more - no way.

Apps, which should be Tivo's best feature, are currently it's worst. I see no reason at all why they couldn't have loads of streaming channels available via apps, channels which don't appear on Virgin's channel line up but which are free to view over the internet. Russia Today and Deutsche Welle have both been mentioned on other threads-both are available as a free live stream on their respective websites. What is the actual difference between streaming this content to a laptop and displaying it via an HDMI cable on your TV and streaming the same content to a Tivo box via it's dedicated modem and displaying it via an HDMI cable on your TV?

The difference is that if you view something via Tivo, the various website owners could see it as VM making money using their site. Think about it. You probably bought your laptop, so whoever sold it to you isn't making any money from it (unless you are paying in installments), but VM rent equipment to you and charge a monthly fee for Tivo on top of that, so they are (however indirectly) making money from the apps.

The websites will see it like that (especially if the apps bypass any ads on the site). So, unless VM come to some sort of arragnment with the site owners (which will probably involve a lot of money) then it's likely that the sites will eventually take action to block access via Tivo.

The apps are utter tosh:) in fact the whole box after the initial excitement is a rather dull experience.

I'm not sure I see a significant difference between Virgin making money from the box they rent to me and Samsung making money from the computer they sold to me, but I accept that this is probably the reason why apps isn't being used in the way I think it should be.

I quite like the Spotify app, but get alittle frustrated as there is no search function, which I find weird for a music app. I have starred 700+ songs to play what I like. Is there another way I'm missing? Also shuffle play?

Not at the moment, no. Would be even better if they added those though :)

I've made loads of playlists and if you star artists then you can search for them on the App.

Look at it this way. Samsung don't make any money from you visiting sites on your laptop, and they don't really use the fact you can visit sites and view online video as a selling point (be honest, if the fact that it can play video and view websites is a major selling point for the laptop, it'd be a pretty pathetic laptop).

Tivo (at least) do use the apps as a selling point for the service, and they do earn money from it.

I will say though that Tivo does offer a pretty pathetic range of apps (a lot fewer than Samsung do on their TVs).

Well it is a pretty poor laptop, but actually internet access and multimedia capabilities are selling points for computers and computer companies do make money from selling products which can access ad supported services, but I have software which means I don't see any of the ads you suggest might be bypassed by Tivo, so actually the only people who make anything out of me streaming live news from a website are those who sold me the computer and those who provide my broadband service. In fact, the result of using a computer or a Tivo would be exactly the same in the scenario I describe and if anything, a deal with Virgin might mean I have to be exposed to the ads which support them, something which very definitely is not the case on a computer.

Just look at the US where all the networks have stopped Hulu, Google TV and other streaming boxes from using their sites for customers to watch shows. There is a whole minefield of rights issues and companies see PCs and TV as two very different devices. They don't want you to watch web content on your TV TV content on your PC.

l think this was something on the all things General TiVo thread but the trouble is there are over 6000 postings on there jog and going back to the news about the BBC apps the sooner they arrive the better as the apps rollout up to now has been too slow for my liking.:)

It's still developing, just remember when Digital TV first came out, it was terrible! No VoD,no HD,no recording and not many channels and the set top boxes kept freezing or doing something dodgy.

I find the YOUTUBE app very good! its just as quick as the PC and for me watching it on a 42inch screen is a lot better, The WEATHER app is BRILL! you can put in any place and select your favourite which will load first!
The only dissapointment on tivo for me is the EPG it will not stay on favourites. which can be rather annoying. everything else is BRILL!

Yes since the update YouTube has worked flawlessly for me .... enjoying the HD music vids too :)
