Loss of BBC2 Wales ??

Hi,

Just noticed I seem to no longer have BBC2 Wales. While I live outside of Wales I still enjoy watching some Welsh only TV shows.

Before Xmas I am sure I had BBC 2 Wales as I recorded a few of the Scrum V showings. Now with the 6 Nations firing up I notice that its gone :-( Any idea why?

I still struggle to see why there is not the full range of BBC channels and S4C outside of Wales on Virgin, it can't cost any more right?

Thanks
Howard

What happens when you select the channel? are you getting an error message?

Most areas can get BBC1 Wales on 864. BBC2 England is usually next to it on 865. What channel number were you viewing it on.

Thanks for the replys, the channel is just no longer there. Have they removed it in the last round of updates?

I don't think we carry it outside of Wales. are you sure it wasn't BBC One Wales on 864?

I don't think BBC2 Wales (or Scotland) have ever been there - just BBC 1.

I thought the BBC themselves were moving away from 'national' variations on BBC 2?

Are you sure, I know I recorded Scrum V during the world cup and I thought that was only on BBC 2 wales

This is odd, I've watched BBC 1 and 2 Wales in England in the past as well.

I can't be 100% sure either way.

I don't remember having it in Liverpool or any announcement of it's removal if it was.

I'm stumped... AFAIK it's never been available outside of Wales, certainly not in your region.

You rang, m'lord? :)

BBC2 Wales or BBC2W have never been available on digital cable in NTL regions outside Wales, and I don't think Telewest did either. It might have been on analogue in some regions, but I doubt it.

I've been in Leicester and watched something on BBC2 Wales in the past, I think it was back in June and it was definitely on VM

Scrum V has been shown on the BBC Red Button a few times, but if it was you wouldn't have been able to record it.

Maybe they moved it to BBC 1 Wales for the world cup but I definatly recorded it.

Out of interest does anyone know why they do not broadcast it? They must have enough bandwidth and Sky does. While I can understand it not being a massive selling point it will be the reason I'll be leaving when my contract expires. Don't get me wrong I don't want to come off like I am bashing Virgin but the plain facts are I can get all of the same channels and more and there is not a huge price difference.

Cheers
-Howard

I have never had access to BBC2 Wales as I remember a documentary being shown on the channel about 12 months ago about Joe Calzaghe that I wanted to watch but couldn't :(

The FTA channels on satellite from Astra & Eurobird are nothing to do with Sky. Channels pay Sky to be included on their EPG and that's it. These channels lease transponders from the satellite companies, so the bandwidth is equivalent to the amount of channels leasing the transponders. This is why you can get every BBC region & every ITV region on satellite. Virgin carries all these, but only on the core fibre network. The coax last leg of distribution has to carry not only Streamed TV channels, but HD & 3D VOD content and Broadband, which since 50 & 100Mb was introduced uses a huge chunk of spectrum.

If Virgin move to BOD (Broadcast on Demand) in future there may be more space, but don't count on it.

No real demand for it outside of Wales I guess. I'm sure you can get some of the programming On Demand via Virgin Media though.

Yes, there is. I found "Walking with Weathermen" very good last year. If the Beeb had the thought to put it on the other regions, perhaps it might boost the tourist trade in Wales.

Is Bandwidth actually the reason then? It would make more sense than "no demand" which is what the customer care rep said

Bandwith isn't an issue for VM, certainly not for a SD channel either... but if you want to believe it's due to bandwith and not due to low demand, then that's up to you ;)
